Now Hall of Famer Bobby Slick Leonard. I know we got some folks on here who probably have stories - I will share one I might have shared before.

My grandpa Robert Flowers played basketball (varsity for a year) at Gershmyer with Slick.

Grandpa says they use to go in the gym of a morning before school and shoot baskets. As he tells it - Ole Slick he'd shoot it for 30 Minutes and I'd rebound for him and then I got to shoot it for 5. He says, no wonder I never got in the damn game.

Pretty awesome story for me - means an awful lot to me. Basketball has always been such a big part of my life and between my dad and grandpa they taught me so darn much about it growing up.

Slick picked a pretty terrible University but he did alright winning a national championship. Truely happy for him and Terre Haute!

Ya, I used to hear those stories from my mother (Gerstmeyer '44), a Black Cat Cheerleader in her day, who lived @ 1311 1st Ave. a "stone's throw" from Tech. That section of town was "heavy coal mining" and as blue collar as you'd find. Grandfather worked @ Viking until they closed the mines following the explosion that killed 22 in 1961. Also had a bros-in law (Paul Newman) that played HS ball w/ Leonard (Gerstmeyer '51).

I used to love spending the weekends @ my grandparents, visiting "Barkie's" across the alley and digging into the cinnamon ball jar while buying used "Superman" comic books. Yes, there was always a lot of talk when "THE ATTUCKS" were in town!

My grandpa was a carpenter for 40 years... I know what type of folks you are talking about.

Love this town, made up of a lot of good people.

My Dad has told me of stories of shooting around with Slick back in the day. Really happy for him. Terre Haute has had some awfully good players over the years.
