Although he was not picked up in the MLB Draft this week, one pro team wants to see what Brandon Dorsett has to offer. After the draft was completed, Dorsett received a call from the Blue Jays. Craig Pearson of the TribStar has the story:

Indiana State alum and two-year player for the Terre Haute Rex, Brandon Dorsett got a call from the Toronto Blue Jays on Wednesday afternoon after the MLB Draft concluded.

The right-handed reliever will fly to Florida this weekend to join Toronto draftees and free agents.

“I’ll be signing down in Florida. They fly me down Saturday to go through physicals and all that. I’ll go through a mini-camp I guess,” Dorsett said. “They called me within the hour [after the draft]. I was surprised. I thought maybe I’d get an opportunity in the next few weeks.”

Dorsett’s career at ISU culminated with a solid senior year in which he had a 1.99 ERA in 28 appearances out of the bullpen.

“I worked really hard, I was running a lot. As far as pitching, I learned a lot about how you’ve got to throw strike one. I’ve just got to keep getting stronger physically and mentally as well,” Dorsett said.

OK.......................can't wait to see how this turns out.

Did he pitch much for the Sycamores? Gotta be looking at the pedigree here, i'm guessing. Cool nonetheless to get the opportunity!!

Ok... he got September call ups or injury replacements with all of those teams (high of 14 games with the Yankees in 1990), but he played a half season with the Reds.. I always considered him a Red.

Congrats to Brandon!

I'll check him out when he comes across state to Melbourne (Brevard Manatees, Milwaukee A)...if he makes the roster.

Recall Eric Arnett (P) @ IU a couple years ago? He's a Manatee:

Second stint with the Philadelphia Phillies (2012–)

On November 4, 2011, Jim Thome agreed to a one year, $1.25 million deal with the Philadelphia Phillies. He mentioned in his news conference that coming back to Philadelphia was a "no-brainer". He also mentioned that, in light of the Achilles injury to Ryan Howard, he would "spend the offseason preparing himself to play first base once or twice a week", despite not playing in the field since 2007. Thome started his first game at 1st base on April 8, where he started a 3-6-3 double play. [33]

Thome experienced stiffness in his lower back in a game against the Chicago Cubs on April 28, 2012, and did not finish the game.[34]In May, he was placed by the Phillies on the 15-day disabled list with a strained lower back.[35]

As of May, 2012, Thome is second to Reggie Jackson (2,597) in all-time career strikeouts.

Guess they feel that w/ his propensity for "whiffing," he'll blend perfectly during hurrican season!
