Following a seven-month review, several significant changes in 2019 Homecoming plans for Indiana State University were announced today by President Deborah J. Curtis and Terre Haute Mayor Duke Bennett.

Well, I think Curtis is out to marginalize ISU as much as possible, so this will help in that pursuit...

How many tents can they fit behind the hill back there? Certainly they wouldn't let Greek tents back there considering the opponent's sideline is right there and they certainly wouldn't let them bring in their alcohol if they did I wouldn't think -- which means you've effectively told Greek Life they are no longer invited to Homecoming. Not even getting into the huge parties the black fraternities basically put on getting members from chapters across the state and country to come into town for.

So, anyone still up for moving Homecoming to Hoops Season?

In addition to hosting meetings with on- and off-campus groups regarding Homecoming, a problem-based learning course was designed so students could help study the issues and provide recommendations.

This may prove to be either good or bad. If people quit coming to the stadium then it will be a bad thing. I'm not sure what the good is. I will come up with something if I can. Thinking, thinking, thinking. Oh I have it. We won't have to put up with the hundreds of people blasting their music before the game and during the game outside the northeast corner of the stadium. I hope it increases attendance at the game. I really think they should have just announced that tent city is closed at kickoff.

I haven't been to homecoming in over 10 years, so I can't give too much of an opinion on how these changes could affect things. But...

Does anyone else find it odd that they're quoting a Freshman from the student group who they consulted with regarding the changes? How could a Freshman really understand what Homecoming means to the alumni base, how long the traditions have been established, etc.? She's never truly partaken before.

Lastly, the items regarding tents on campus is completely bogus. You want people to enjoy all the great changes that have happened on campus then don't play football 3 miles away.

I'm going to reserve judgement until they clarify as to what tents are able to go inside of Memorial and the specific restrictions surrounding them.

Well looks like homecoming is dead (at least will be after this season). Unfortunetly it would appear a few bad apples ruined it for everyone.

I would recommend they look at how University of Tennessee handles tailgating.. There you reserve a specific spot if I understand it correctly. It was an enjoyable experience.

She's kind of a joke when it comes to athletics. I know that I haven't been too impressed with her either. This is another perfect example. Getting rid of the loud music is the only thing they should have done to be honest. I feel like Tent City is a tradition that shouldn't really be messed with.

Gotta give ISU "academia" (8 week course) credit for coming up w/ these "freshman-like" ideas: :lol:

"Also in an effort to improve safety, a class lead by professor Darlene Hantzis has studied the issue and provided recommendations. Suggestions include:

1) an increase in sober ride shuttles between the stadium and campus;
2) a “Homecleaning” service project on Sunday after Homecoming,where students and others will help clean up Wabash Avenue;
3) activities that will provide alternatives to the pub crawl." - Trib-Star (see below)

Now that's some in-depth brain storming... :disturbed:

Why do you think that? Her actions, inactions?

Well, it started with her statement that ISU does not compete (for students) with IU and Purdue. Excuse me? Uh, yes we do.

Then it continued with her changing of the laptop program from an academic award to a needs based award. ISU was ahead of the curve by providing a laptop as a reward for good grades in high school. Nice while it lasted.

She seems to want to turn ISU into a lower level institution that serves only lower income and academically challenged students. She’s talked about how this is ISU’s mission. At least Benjy wanted us to have “Programs of Distinction.” I don’t get the idea that she even wants students who could survive in a “Program of Distinction.”

And then she comes along destroying Homecoming.

So yeah, I’m not a fan. Hiring her was a monumental mistake. Way to go Board of Trustees!!!

Depending on what tents are inside, it could be a plus to get those people inside the stadium. The frustrating thing is that as usual, a few bad people ruin it for everybody else. Just because they don't have tent city, can't groups still have their own tailgate area? I know we had a group of about 25 last year, and we weren't in tent city.

Forcing people to go inside to a game that they don’t want to go to begin with isn’t going to make them suddenly care about the product on the field...

Of course I wish the people who came to homecoming would leave Tent City when the game started and come inside and watch the game. Many of them do. To the ones that don’t thank you for coming home to Indiana state for homecoming we hope you had a good time come back next year even if you don’t want to go in to the game. In truth I really don’t care one way or another if you go to the game - so long as you come back in the first place isn’t that all that really matters? Apparently not.

Sometimes you can’t have it both ways. Sometimes things aren’t broken. Sometimes a parking problem is a good problem - when it comes to sporting events it’s a good problem. People that go to sporting events that have parking problems figure it out and carry on.

The bottom line - we should be looking for ways to best accommodate, build relationships and thank our alumni. We don’t need to force feed our athletic programs to alumni if we do those three things well. If we were better at those things we wouldn’t be making logistical decisions about homecoming. Hell we wouldn’t be playing football games in anarchaic stadium off campus. We wouldn’t be doing a lot of things the way we’re doing them if we did those things well.

I’ve always felt like Indiana state does homecoming pretty well. The parade has managed to stick around for quite a while and is pretty well thought of in the community. Tent city has always been well attended. The tailgating scene has drastically improved at homecoming the last 5 to 10 years. Love or hate the walk it’s a tradition and students have embraced it and Indiana state for the most part has managed to stay out of the way of it.

Homecoming is not something we should be looking to change... do you want to add to what we already have great - leave what is already in place alone it works focus on something that doesn’t work.

But it could be said that the tent city event did make people go in, even if they didn't give a shit about the team. Homecoming was the one game of year where you got large walk up ticket sales numbers. That game alone usually skewed the yearly attendance statistics for the football program. When the weather is great, I've never seen the stadium more packed then I had at Homecoming games.

Absolutely tent city attendance helps with ticket sales. The more people in tent city / in tailgating area - the more people that will go in the game. It’s not complicated.

You want to visit tent city now? Have a ticket or visit your alumni tent on campus... Ummmm what?? The football stadium isn’t on campus but grand idea let’s direct traffic away from the stadium - while trying to direct traffic inside the stadium. That is genius.

Not only that - they’re putting new tailgating “rules” in place. What in the world... Restrictions on amplified music and a set time period for tailgating activities. I tell you what - I’m going to go ahead not renew my season tickets. That environment sounds exactly like the type of tailgating environment that I don’t want to be a part of... I will just be in the deer stand - thanks anyway.

This was my take-away from it too.

Of the few conversations I had with Prettyman, one thing I know he loved about ISU athletics was our tailgating experience/environment at football games. He would definitely scoff at the changes being implemented.
