UpperIowa

The Recruit Level
I've been following this board all year and just wanted to comment on what a great coach you have in Heller. I've known Rick since he first stepped foot on campus at Upper Iowa University as an athlete. Watched him letter in 3 sports (baseball, basketball, football) - just a natural all around athlete, but baseball was his sport by far. Watched him come back and turn the program around at UIU and take them to the D3 world series, it was sad to see him leave for UNI, but everyone knew one day a D1 school would come calling. He did wonderful at UNI with a lot of strikes against him (low scholarships, scholarships in-state only, off campus field, etc....), he always took time to keep in touch with everyone from Upper Iowa still and many went to games. It was tough to see what happened at UNI (he should have got the Iowa jobs a few years ago, still no idea why they chose Dahm over him), but relieved to see that Indiana State hired him on. Season is young yet, but I think you can already see what a great job he does with the players, fans and alumni. I can't say enough about what a great coach/person you hired. I know there was some controversy, I talked with Rick at UIU's homecoming this year and he had nothing but good things to say about Indiana State and the people he had come in touch with so far and talked about his plans to reach out to alumni and former players. Good luck the rest of the year. A new Sycamore fan from Upper Iowa University!

Thanks for the post. Living in Iowa, I can appreciate having a Peacock fan pulling for the Trees. We needed the right coach to come in and keep our recent success rolling and Heller has done that so far. Here's to hoping he and the players can surprise us and accomplish more than last year.

I have been very impressed with him. He took a program that was already good to the next level. He has a different style than Lindsay Meggs did...but you have to credit Meggs and Tyler Herbst with solid recruiting and bringing the team to the level it played at last season. It is extremely gratifying to see how Heller has come in and taken the program up yet another notch. Yes, the season is young, but I see nothing but good things for this program. I'm amazed at the freshmen who are making big contributions to the program this year...five of them...something we haven't seen in a while. Credit the old regime and the new regime for the great identification of this young talent and the development of it. Thanks, UpperIowa for your post.

Thanks for the words UpperIowa.

I hate for another institution to have their program shuttered, but the timing couldn't have been more perfect for us. He has been a phenominal hire and some expected this to be a rebuilding year and we're sitting at 22-9. Outstanding.

Yeah after the uproar for the other guy not getting hired, I would have to say I am not sure if we could have made a better decision...

It appears to me that Ron Prettyman has done a very good job of finding new coaches that fill our needs and have improving if not winning programs. I'm expecting as much from womens basketball and have no reason to expect less.

Terrific choice

Let me add my two cents worth.
Though I have known him only a few months, Rick Heller has quickly convinced me that he is (1) a great guy and (2) an excellent coach.
