MTSU would be better off to drop down a notch in FB and join the MVC...w/ Belmont in the mix, we'd then have two (2) Nashville area schools (similar to Chicago w/ Loyola & Valpo). Without MTSU, I see little value of adding Belmont, given their "1 sport only" valued character.

Murray St.'s a different story...

I may be very dense but I just don't see why Belmont wants the Valley or why the Valley want's Belmont.

Let's be honest here. The Valley is in no position to bargain here anymore. In two years, we have lost our two best teams and frankly, the two most "recognizable" teams as well. If we were still ANY kind of mid-major conference with strength, our 25-8 team (ILST) would have made the tourney this year. We have plummeted in our RPI strength as a conference and most of all, Commissioner Elgin seemingly has sat on his ass and has done NOTHING and allowed other similar schools to have several options and now, the MVC is sitting there looking desperate.

There's no easy answer unless we merge with someone and divide into geographic regions. That takes preparation and effort and I am not sure were are ready for the challenge currently.....and that sucks. If Elgin and the Valley AD's sit on their hands any longer and don't get moving, we will NOT survive 5 years.

Wow - trying to figure out which conference the MVC could merge with is pretty difficult. They all have distinct advantages and disadvantages... some have MVFC members, some have geography sense, some have like university sense, some have more power, some less power.... it's nuts. When you look at the Summit, Horizon, A10, and OVC - it's like just flip a coin. Thoughts?

I see zero merger between any of the conferences you list. the article was about the Sunbelt and C-USA and how distant their members are... Course, the Pac-12 has schools from Tucson to Pullman, the acc from miami to pittsburgh, the big 12 from wva to lubbock...

i'd like to see the valley be as compact as possible; lower travel costs, less travel for the teams AND it makes it easier for the FANS, the $$ to follow teams home AND away

I'd like to know what the relationship between Doug Elgin (MVC) and Patty Viverito (MVFC) is?
Does it matter to them who comes and goes in the conference they don't rule over? Are they that independent of one another that it is a detriment to the schools that have football and basketball?
I would think that ISU's best interests are served if they are looking after the wellfare of all member schools.
What are the advantages of having these two commissioners? Is there ever a chance of a merger of these two conferences. It seems like there is a lot of confusion with this separation and we'd be in a better position if everything was under one roof.
I would like to see Todd Golden do a little investigative reporting on this.

You've hit on one of the biggest issues. They run independent of each other and Viverito is also over the Pioneer Football League. This just adds to the fragmentation I've mentioned in other threads.

Jason is wholly accurate on the problems in st louis...

Patty Viverito has three jobs...

she's in her 25th season as senior associate commissioner at the Missouri Valley Conference...

she's in her 32nd year directing the Missouri Valley Football Conference as its commissioner...

AND

she's in her 23rd season as Commissioner of the Pioneer Football Conference...

I've never believed she's able to split her head in three independent portions.

there's obviously collaboration/cooperation between the 2/3 entities...
