i was in terre haute for a short time on wednesday and saw that they are moving right along with the remodeling project for the locker room complex at memorial stadium. i also understand that they are close to proceeding with removing the old turf and installing the new playing surface.

i hope to be back in town on monday and tour the new on-campus football offices.

Hey 'Stadt, when's that historic Haubstadt Bierstube? Gotta be one of the best in S. Indiana! Back in my day (where have you heard this line?!), we used to run the circuit during the Summer:

Haubstadt
Tell City
Jasper

Usually took a couple weeks to recover after each one...

Coming up June 18th... Right around the corner. I was stationed in Germany for a few years so I'm critical when they call it German Sommerfest and server Coors, Miller Lite, etc.

I was home in Indiana for the race over Memorial Day weekend and I went out to TH to see some freinds. The construction is coming along, but I saw they had preserved the scoreboard, which I hope is just temporary, before its pitched, because that thing is a relic and needs to be replaced. But to be honest folks, when Bradley came in he said a new football facility was in the plan because Memorial "wasn't meeting our needs" I know this was before the bottom fell out of the economy, but I still think it would be better to save that money and hopefully watch it grow as we inch toward a new stadium.

I'll put it this way, does anyone think that the new locker room is going help improve the product on the field in the upcoming season?

bigblu....in a word...YES!!!!!

its going to take time to build a new on-campus facility for football....until then, you needed to re-model portions of the current memorial stadium....it was falling apart....isu had a team of engineers look at memorial stadium in the last year or so....and they all agreed that work was needed to fix the stadium up....while they are not completly re-doing memorial stadium, they are fixing it up so that it will be playable and usable until a new stadium on campus is built and completed....

plus...the news that the university was actually doing something, facility-wise, for football is exciting....nothing has been done to memorial stadium since the facility was initially re-modeled in 1968....1968 I said!!!!!....hulman center has remodeled the locker rooms at least three times since it was built in 1971....

And just wait until they fully develop plans for the new football stadium. It will be a MAJOR facelift not only for ISU, but for Terre Haute, as well. I don't want to violate a confidence, but the plans are really exciting and are not something that has been out in the discussion boards before. Think bigger than what we've thought in the past. Not necessarily stadium size, but in scope of project. Truly a chance to remake the image of the whole city!!!

10 year timeframe is what I've been told...

If and when this new stadium comes around, do you think T.H. North and South will still have their annual Bell game? I assume they probably will, but wanna hear what others think.

10 Yrs?

ITF -

10 years? OMG! I was hoping for something in the ~5 yr timeframe as projects tend to get derailed over that time period but it that's the plan.

Hell when State is not even the 3rd option for resources / attention / etc in the State but if State hired a bunch of Indiana legislators as instructors, administrators... Never mind, I don't think any State of Indiana educational institution would do that (IVY Tech) and I'm SURE none of the fine, duly elected reps would use a relationship like that to enrich their eimployer...

This is the problem with Indiana State though -- always trying to keep everything so damn secretive. They wonder why they can't get support behind their sports. You need to bring fans in, make them part of the process, not stonewall them at every turn.

4Q and Svo,

I don't think they're being "secretive," but rather trying to get their ducks in a row before going full steam ahead. Ron knows what he's doing, trust him on that. This project is going to be great! In a city like Terre Haute, the University can't just go out by themselves and say, "We're going to do this whether you like it or not." Well, they could, but in Terre Haute, that wouldn't play well. Give 'em some time to work with the city, IDEM, and other stakeholders to make sure everyone's on the same page. Who knows, behind the scenes they could be working toward some sort of agreement like Carbondale did with SIU to add a fractional amount to the local sales tax for the construction of "Saluki Way." That would sure be a nice shot in the arm, wouldn't it? (I have no idea if that's going on or not. Just speculation on my part)

As for the 10 year timeframe, it was originally 5 years, but with the economy tanking, major gifts have slowed all over, not just at ISU. Don't fret, the football stadium is a big priority for both RP and Dr. Bradley. It WILL happen. But lots of other things are going to happen as well. It will be worth the wait.

If anyone is just so excited that they want to donate toward the new stadium right now, I'd call Ron Prettyman. I doubt that he would turn away the money. Particularly if you want to get it named after you...

tree...i agree with you.....

that time frame could be shortened considerably if some big bucks alums would gladly make some major donations to the cause...the longer it takes to raise the money, the longer it will take for the project to get done....

I'm not going to get into this again, but some of those very same alums are not going to blindly donate without seeing some tangible plans. Same goes for your ordinary joe alumni, too.

Tell RP you want to donate $10 million, and I'm sure you'll get to see everything they have...

I'm an average joe. However, in this economy, I'm not parting with any money unless I see something tangible. They were building a new stadium before I went to State, plans were made again during my time and they still have plans.

svoboda....what do you want to see....

blueprints? a major press conference announcing the project? a model mock-up of the proposed new facility? an artist's rendering? what information do you need to see?

until i see or hear otherwise, i am trusting in bradley and prettyman to get the job done....and yes, rumors about a new football stadium have gone around for years....but the difference now is that isu FINALLY has a president and athletic director that seem to have their heads on straight and a desire to follow through with a project....

after years of talk about a new baseball stadium, isu finally has got a new one that is scheuled to be completed in the next few months.....for now, i am trusting in bradley and prettyman to show the same kind of leadership with the football stadium project....

everybody seems to want everything NOW....but it takes time to get such a large project off the board....any contributions for a new football stadium will more than likely come from the corporate route....as well as from interested and supportive alums....that was how prettyman did it at his former job in california....and i am pretty sure that is his modus operandi with what he is doing at indiana state.....

i realize that this is now a "what have you done for me lately" society....but i am putting my faith in dr. bradley and ron prettyman to get the job done...if they don't follow through, however, i'll be among those yelling and complaining the loudest....but that hasn't been shown to be the case yet....so i am content to let them move at their own pace and comfort level....

as for isu being so "secretive"...that is like most major businesses...and colleges.....i fought against that when i worked in the athletic department at isu....and i heard from other sports information offices around the conference and country that their schools do the same type of things....

i agree that until all the plans are set and there is a framework for what they want to do....we're not going to hear much....until they are ready to go public...

How did ISU-Muncie do it?

I know ISU-Muncie recently completed a new football stadium; I've no idea HOW they did it, just that it was announced, they had artists' conceptions out the waazoo on the Net, had some big donor throw scads of money at it and it was done. I KNOW that Papa John Schnatter didn't donate big money PUBLICLY (Naming rights) but he may have privately/quietly. (Ever wonder if it drives ISU-Muncie crazy that one of their most PUBLIC alumnus' is more closely associated w/UL'ville??

I agree, you want to sell an idea/product; they need to ADVERTISE. I've read (Trib-Star) that 'some of State's neighbors to the North and East aren't 'happy w/ all of the land that State is buying...'

I was dumbfounded w/ a statement from either Dr Benjamin's farewell or Dr Bradley's welcome address, I can remember the jist was basically "State needs to develop a good neighbor policy/position with Terre Haute." The implication was 'Hi - Terre Haute, we've never met before but we're your neighbor on the North Side, our name is ISU...'
What struck we was; Huh? State has been in the Haute for 100+ years and T-H DOESN'T know you're here?!?!

I was also struck at something Dr Benjamin said that insinutated that the State of Indiana wanted to / discussed the possibility of ISU not REMAINING independent. I shuddered at the thought of an iu-Terre Haute or iu-West...

Yes to all three accounts. Let folks know about it... ramp up some excitement and you'll start to get some donations.
