Well, it seems we have given the Indiana Statesman student paper enough time to get their act together. The Spring sports are being covered less than sporatically.

The last baseball contest was our win against Iliinois-Springfield a couple of weeks back.

Now, here we are with some truly exciting conference games upon us at home and the paper had no pre-story to garner interest in students coming out to the Bradley series.

A GOOD student newspaper is the pulse of the university. Either the patient is on a respirator or the paper is shirking its duty to keep the students informed what things are going on that they can attend. I believe they are shirkingtheir duty, BIG TIME!

Please, those who have contacts, speak up and let the Indiana Statesman know the baseball team needs support and the students need to be reminded of what's going on on campus!

But, they do count two recent stories about Sycamore Sam's head being found and the fact that the found head will be repaired and used as a back-up for the new head the University ordered! Now that is big athletic news!

Yeahhhhhh this is what happens when a very select few decide what direction something goes in...it is only attractive to a very small demographic...I wish the paper the best but it needs to be changed to fit a wider audience. I understand wanting to improve, I don't understand trying to make the paper in the image of yourself.

But have the sex columns continued? I mean, that's all a college newspaper is for, right? How would the campus community go on without regular updates on that one girl's exploits???

The Statesman requested to add me as a "friend" on Facebook. I sent them a message telling them I'd only accept it if they started covering sports. They replied "We never stopped."

I guess they could say they never stopped. It is just the consistancy I question. Stories once in a while is what has been the track record. They should cover all sports in some manner. I hope today's article is going to be the norm for coverage. However, I would like to see more UPCOMING notice so that students will have a calendar of what there is to do on campus. We had a good crowd at the game Sunday...about 600. The Statesman could be a big part in growing attendence for ALL sports.

Though I agree that a student paper is an important indicator and very important on campus...today, what really matter and how promotion occurs on campus is through facebook, IMs and other digital media. Thus, I think that the athletics department is doing a fairly good job of promotion...considering??

What specifically are they doing to reach the people who are not signed up for the athletic department's Facebook pages to get students informed directly and frequently to let them know what's going on on campus?

Not saying it is the only way, but it is the best use of time.

To answer that question, I would say that everytime that I get any kind of feed from the "Athletics" fan page, I then get it from ISU, then from ISU Alumni Assoc., etc. It ain't perfect, but it is far more effective than the statesmen. Back in the day just about every student would, at a minimum pick up the statesmen. The last two times I was on campus I saw huge stacks of the Statesmen sitting in the racks and no students even bothering to pick it up. It is just like the "real world" the days of the traditional newspaper for students are just about over....

Also, I have to assume that in the Commons the athletics department is putting up the information on their HUGE banners that hang on the north end of the seating area. As they did for football and basketball and other sports. Last time I walked into the Commons their were ceiling to floor colored banners announcing the upcoming game/s. There is not perfect answer, but the Statesman isn't the answer that is for sure....

Because of comments I made here and on Facebook I was contacted by Trever Fehrenbach of the Statesman staff. Trever mailed copies of the Statesman with Valley championship and NCAA stories in them to me. Pretty good coverage for those events. I thanked him privately, but not publicly until now. Thanks Trever! He even included a poster of the Missouri Valley Championship team. I had hoped that the Statesman would follow up these issues with consistent coverage of all ISU athletics. Apparently that is not so. I suggest you contact the Statesman directly with a copy of your concerns to RP and Dr. Bradley. I don't know what, if anything, RP can change at the Statesman--but knowing him, he wants to be aware. I'm pretty sure Dr. Bradley would be interested in your concerns.

According to the website the last time there was a sports story was isus baseball victory over siu edwardsville

I started to write for the baseball team last year for The Statesman. They were like, yeah, we want to do Feature articles instead of game recaps and previews. When I said, seriously, who does feature articles on a series but no follow up game recaps? When I wrote my one and only article for the season, it got great reviews and then someone from the statesman put it online under a their name and took credit, and I was never again called to do another story. My story was the season preview for the team. I have absolutely zero faith in The Statesman ever doing great Sports Coverage again. I think something needs to be done about it as well, students, like myself, would know a lot more about sporting events that are coming and everything else.

Don't forget, they need the space so we can keep up with the sex lives of the female staff...
