Art was the eldest of nine children and was an excellent athlete in his own right. He played football and baseball, and was an accomplished boxer. He was given the chance to play football for the legendary Knute Rockne at the University of Notre Dame, but chose instead to attend the Indiana State Normal School, Georgetown, and Duquesne. However, he never achieved a degree.

I was unable to confirm this at their site, but it is my memory that between IUP being called Indiana State College up to 1965 and the IUP change, that for less than two years, Both "our" ISU and this one were BOTH called Indiana State University but ultimately, after complaints of the confusion, "their" ISU was renamed Indiana University of Pennsylvania. (I was from Pennsylvania if you aren't aware of that).

I was actually going thru one of the College Guides and noticed that there TWO Indiana State Universities and that is actually how I ended up finding about "our" Indiana State University back in 1966. I also ended up visiting TH and decided that I like that one and the rest is history as they say when I became a Sycamore in 1967. The catcher? I could live in Sycamore Towers which was brand new and IUP put all frosh in a dump.

No regrets whatsoever.

Was IUP called Indiana State Normal School at one time?
YES. I think it actually was. Like ISU, it was founded around 1865-70 and normal schools were a way to keep colleges away from certain rules financially. The way I remember the story was that when we both had the same name in the 60's, that it was actually the THIRD time the two institutions had the same name. Wikipedia said it was Indiana Normal but I recall it was Indiana State Normal, Indiana State College as well as Indiana State University for those 2 years or so.

I informed President Rankin of the name "conflict" and I remember he spoke on the subject at an Awards dinner that same evening.
