Looks like the last time we were ranked was 1996 when we were 21st in the Coaches Poll.

And here I thought I was one of the younger ones on this board. A few of you are making me look pretty old.
This is the one that matters in my eyes. When was the last time we were ranked?
Agree with some caveats; some coaches don't vote the ballot themselves. They let asst's do it; other staff members. Some have let their kids vote it (at least they've made that claim publicly. And I don't care if it's the last vote of the year; the only person who should vote IS the voter.)
Wasn't Tom Osborne's last "national title" at Nebraska basically a gift from the other coaches? Some said as much, that win or lose the bowl game, they were going to vote Nebraska # 1 as it was Osborne's final season.
FCS has a playoff; so the polls do become (somewhat) irrelevant...
Still, that means the assistants are like, "Those Trees can play."
The AGS poll counts but it doesn't matter...It is kind of nice for fans of other schools to be like, "Ok, Damnit, they are good."Yep; glad we're ranked. There are plusses and minuses with both polls (sorry, ags doesn't count)
I don't like the bcs in principle; glad that FCS settles it via playoff; 16 teams was enough for me, didn't see the need to move to 20.
Wish the NCAA did a better job in marketing the playoffs; wish they did a better job tying in the 'old' bowls as part of the playoffs.
From 1964 to 1972, four regional bowl games were played that led up to a wire service poll to determine the final champion of Division II's predecessor, the NCAA College Division.
Those games were:
• West: Camellia Bowl, in Sacramento, California 1964–1972
• Midwest: Pecan Bowl in Abilene, Texas 1964–1967 & Arlington, Texas 1968–1970, Pioneer Bowl in Wichita Falls, Texas, 1971–1972
• Mideast: Grantland Rice Bowl in Murfreesboro, Tennessee 1964–1968 & Baton Rouge, Louisiana 1969–1972
• East: Tangerine Bowl in Orlando, Florida 1964–1967, Boardwalk Bowl in Atlantic City, New Jersey 1968–1972
Today, there are probably as many or more team in FCS that were in the College Division than today's Div II teams.
So, USE that history for the FCS playoffs.
IF the NCAA had any sense (and I'm sure it's been discussed behind closed doors)... they could DO a BCS, FBS playoff USING the existing bowls.

How does the AGS poll "count?"
Isn't THIS the current process?
The number of wins a team has, as well as the strength of schedule, are used by the committee to determine the playoff field. The committee that selects the at-large teams utilize it's own rankings, which are not shared with the public. The Committee is comprised of a select group of FCS Athletic Directors.
Once the 20 teams are chosen, the top four teams are seeded, and the pairings are chosen to eliminate major travel. No conference foes may meet in the opening round of the playoffs.

I don't mean towards the playoff process I just mean us as fans. None of these really "matter to the playoffs."
plus 89I actually think that the "fans" that vote on both the AGS and FCSFans.com polls are probably, overall, more knowledgeable about FCS football than many of the voters in the coaches and media polls. Yeah, I know that sounds stupid, but coaches don't always take their voting seriously ("I let my kid vote..."), and the media folks often don't know how to pronounce the names of the schools they're voting for, let alone anything about their football teams. In the media poll last week, there was speculation that North Dakota STATE dropped six spots after a bye week because the UNIVERSITY of North Dakota lost a game badly. Voters didn't know the difference.
Really, none of these polls mean diddly. In FCS, we get to prove it on the field. However, after almost a year of reading AGS and FCSFans, I actually think their polls might really be more accurate!!!
