We shot 41.7% against Wichita State, they shot 48.1%. They shot 42.3% in the first and then 53.8% in the 2nd half. We shot 46.2% in the first and then 36.4% in the second. Gave up too many easy buckets and we fell apart defensively in the 2nd half.Where is the defense? We're in the middle of a three game losing streak and that is the question that I keep asking about this team. During our winning streak, we were playing lights out defense. During this three game losing streak, our opponents have shot better then our season defensive field goal percentage average.
Our offense is predicated on shooting and hitting the three ball. When our threes aren't falling, it is mission critical that our defense is making stops until we can hit some shots. We shot 37.5% against Creighton, 35.8% against Evansville and 39.2% against Wichita State while all of our opponents shot 42% or better.
For this team to win when we're not shooting our best, it will have to be as a result of our defense. Even when we're shooting well, our defensive intensity still needs to be on point against our quality Missouri Valley competition as Evansville has painfully shown us twice.

Which team shows up in Springfield?
Somewhat. Teams are starting to get wise to Odums drive and kick, Carter certainly isn't getting much space when catching the ball, so on and so forth. However, we're just not hitting shots. We've had PLENTY of wide open looks and have just missed them. If we're not knocking down shots, we're only as good as our defense. Once our guys get tired or certain guys get into foul trouble, that's when teams have pulled away.Is this a result of other coaches making better adjustments than Lansing so far this season? Not a rip on him by any means, just a question. Outside of them just out hustling us, it's the only logical thing I can come up with.

I know our offense relies heavily on the three, but we really need better production/scoring midrange in, especially finishing around the bucket. We're undersized to boot, so it's a double whammy. I know we've got one more spot in the 2011 class available and I'd love to see it filled with a player that can score around the bucket consistently. Not sure who is left out there that can fill that void though.
Kitchell will fill that void if he builds up so he can also muscle opponents--he does everything that you can ask of a big man.

You'd think that with Carl, Carter, and Odum on the floor we could get a little more scoring consistency. But, at this point it seems like teams are content to let Carl get his 12-15 and just want to shut everyone else down. I'd like to see Carter get run through more screens from Walker and whomever is playing the 3 (Lathan/Kelly/etc.). I'd almost treat Carter like Reggie used to play with the Pacers. Not to mention, running him through double screens may create mis-matches with Kelly or Lathan to get some dribble penetration or a stop and pop mid ranger. Use Carl on the weak side and slide Odum over to the wing after the initial pass to create some balance on the floor as well. With as good a shooter as Carter CAN be, the guy guarding him should have zero energy left to play offense. If teams start switching up through the screens, Walker should become the focal point and just pound teams inside. I'd think that would help free up Carl even more too.
One of the biggest differences I see is that teams are not respecting odums scoring ability when he drives anymore. They are not collapsing off of shooters like AC to help on Odum because they know he is looking to kick it out. Odum needs to show he will take what the defense gives him and look to score more on drives.
