The Sycamore Level
Well I can say that today in my Econ class, I got my first taste of professors bashing the ISU football team....and I was sitting in the front row with my ISU Football t shirt on, I felt like saying something back but I kept my mouth shut the whole class, and I can truely say, I was pretty pissed off...:censored:

If football players would quit giving nerds swirlies in high school we wouldn't have this issue.

I just couldnt believe that he didnt see me sitting there with my T Shirt on....Im the only athlete in the class but, C'Mon Man! Im so glad I didnt say what I was feeling or, I wouldnt be playing football anymore..

Heres an Idea. Ask him why the economy is in a far worse situation than we are. And if his area of expertise was performing a little bit better then there wouldn't be an issue with money and athletic fundings.

What's the rest of the story...

I'd be tempted to ask the (idiot) prof just exactly what that has to do with the topic at hand...

Was THIS the topic at hand?? Just part of the story...
I've no idea what State's Athletic Dep't debt is (if they even have one) but perhaps the professor was engaged in a current topics (economy) discussion...As to the prof. "doing his job better and we wouldn't have this mess..."
Is he an investment banker? A greedy mortgage broker??
I doubt there are THAT many economists who helped get us here -- they're just arguing HOW we got here and HOW we get out of here

http://www.usatoday.com/sports/college/2010-01-13-ncaa-athletics-funding-analysis_N.htm

Of the 30 public schools where the percentage of athletics revenue coming from allocated sources rose the most from 2005 to 2008, about half are from schools in the power conferences, often assumed to be self-supporting. The '09 reports, which might show bigger gaps because of the recession, are due Friday.

At the University of Cincinnati, a Big East Conference school, subsidies grew from 26.7% ($5.6 million) of athletics revenue in 2005 to 33.1% ($10.7 million) in '08. That made Cincinnati the power-conference public school where reliance on subsidies grew most during the years studied. UC athletics also has a $24 million operating debt.

"The ultimate goal is to have the athletics department running on its own," said Tim Lolli, the student body president. "But students here love big-time athletics ... and they are willing and eager to help athletics as much as possible."

Cincinnati has trimmed its budget. The faculty has faced state budget cuts, hiring "frosts" and some wage freezes. Bigger class loads are coming, faculty chairwoman Marla Hall said.

Scholarships to three sports, including men's track and field, were cut last year, coach Bill Schnier said. But new money might not bring them back.

"If (college) sports have to match the pros dollar-for-dollar in salaries and facilities, then we'll have to find more money next year, and the year after that, and the year after that," Schnier said. "Someone has to put an end to this madness."

Nebraska and Louisiana State were the only schools whose athletics programs reported receiving no subsidies in each of the four years studied.

Well their is a right and a wrong way to go about what you are feeling and you handled it the right way. But stand up for what you believe in man, is it a battle worth fighting? Hell yes it is, he is paid by the University, not to bash the university (which is essentially what it sounds like he did) but educate the students at the university. That is the ultimate sign of disrespect and unprofessional of him to speak that way about his employer, not to mention in front of an athlete and an entire class. Now if he had those feelings in a one on one conversation with someone that would be totally different.

if the university would go by which programs are successful....

i can easily think of a few academic programs there at ISU that would go by the wayside....

by the way, don't you like it when professors make these kinds of comments....when they are in control.....i think fans of the athletic program...and specifically football...should go and ask them some questions...and make comments about their teaching methods....graduation rates....make fun of them.....for a change...and see how they like it....i guarantee you that they wouldn't.....

by the way....there should be a complaint line in the athletic department...to inform officials what is being said and by what staffers/professors....it's something that ron prettyman and dr. bradley should not allow to happen.....

many of these instructors find it easy to make comments when they think that there is no danger of rebuttal...that is because they don't allow rebuttal in class....they are in charge.....someone should take them on.....

Showtime...

can you paraphrase the 'bashing?'

Shoot -- I'd love to hear / read the entire quote; place it in context as well

Thanks

Maybe this website would be a place to mention professors, instructors and staffers

who bash the athletic program in general or a specifc sport.....put their names and what classes they teach....on the website....

or not....lol.....

TJ -- Do you have a journalism degree or English degree from State?

I don't remember the professors forbidding discussions or rebuttals; I spent all four years in Arts and Sciences -- maybe it's a Departmental thing

I had a Political Science prof who would damn near flunk you if you had the gaul to disagree with him in class. Got my butt out of that class as quick as I could...

when i was at sycamore hill...lol...

i was in classes at isu....where i saw what went on.....and this was back in the supposed "good ole days"...lol....and when i worked at isu....i heard horror stories from student-athletes.....about instructors and professors...who often berated student-athletes....in class....just because those instructors or professors didn't like athletics....

i went to a meeting once...when i worked at isu...and heard one professor stand up and say that isu should drop all sports....and make isu the "harvard of the midwest"...yep...he actually said that.....somebody obviously didn't tell him that harvard has sports teams...including football.....lol....

It would take more than dissolving the athletic department at State in order to make it the 'harvard of the midwest...'

I had profs that expected you to defend your self in a discussion; it's called 'critical thinking' Guess I was lucky and had pretty good professors (I'll ignore the flamboyant English professor who was later a 'person of interest' in a murder spree across the Midwest...)

Ok, I cant remember word for word what he said but he started off when someone tossed something up to him and he dropped it..he said "I catch like a ISU reciver"...then about ten minutes into the class he said something about "The Streak" and what not..It wasnt long phrases at the Football team but poking fun at us..
Many things went threw my mind there. First off I dont need to overreact, ever since I decided to go to ISU, I have heard all types of people talk crap (nice word) to me for wanting to play football here...friends, my high school head coach, alot of people...even when I first got to campus, I would have an ISU football shirt on and people would come up to me and ask "Why are you wearing that?"....So I have taken all of this in, and when my suspension is up (at the end of this sememster) and I come into camp, its all gonna come out...and to the people in or out of the University that run their mouths, I have to ask Why? Whats your problem with the team? Every single one of those players are D1 athletes, some might have futures in the NFL of CFL they are great players! And this year, when we win games, and we WILL win +5 games this year, all im gonna do is look at them and smile...smile because you talked down on us and lit a fire under us, and are goal is now not just to win, but to prove you wrong, and make you eat every bad thing you have said about the program..Man, I got to say Im ready to start playing again before I start losing my mind lol

Showtime, I would say that it is good that you didn't stoop to the profs level...though he might be tenured, and might be "overly intelligent" in his mind. His remarks appear to have been slanderous and immature. Remember, he might be an "expert" on the economy and economics, but he certainly isn't an expert on football or sports and obviously not an expert on the economics of college athletics. It is very easy for any authority figure to become critical of something that they don't understand. They know they won't be questioned..would he make those comments in a social setting in HMSU? I bet not.

Don't sweat him and his comments...at the end of the day what do they really mean? Nothing!

Let me tell you this, the general attitude around time and on campus has little to nothing to do with you personally or the current team. It has to do with the teams before you and the way things were being ran prior to Trent. Unfortunately you are having to catch the wrath of all those mis managed teams in more than one way. Their is damn good reasoning why the football team has the reputation they do at Indiana State. I know because I was at Indiana State prior to Trent and things were a mess. People really developed some hate for the football program. They were not only a mess on the field, but they were :censored::censored::censored: off the field...
