Very glad it's Lansing! No more national searches that bring in a guy for 2-3 years. Awesome that we're staying in the family.
:sycamores::sycamores:

Guys, i dont understand this thinking! We want a guy that is likely only going to be here 2-3 years. That means he is pumping out great seasons and putting us on the front page. If a coach is lured in by the big boys and we have to get other coaches.....that means the team is playing at a top level. Unfortunately we dont have the athletic budget to pay top price and great coaches eventuall move up in pay with successful season after successful season.

Here's hoping Lansings only here for a couple seasons!!

GO BIG BLUE! FIGHT BIG BLUE! GO STATE, WIN!

Haha this is very true. I think Lansing is our best choice for the time being and he has the chance to be very successful here, and in his first season! Therefore guys, he is our new coach now and there is no reason for people to question this and say lansing is not the right choice. So lets all stand behind him and give him full support!

I will just never understand this in house stuff...

I've trusted RP all along and I'll continue to trust him...if he feels Lansing is the right guy for the job (whether it's based on timing or not), I'll go along with that.

My gut reaction is that this was the only way to keep the team together and maintain the integrity of the program at this time; whether Lansing is ready or not. I'm not totally against that, although it does leave a bit of a sour taste in my mouth.

I HOPE Lansing is ready for this gig...it's still a pretty big uphill climb to the top of the MVC.

The two sides of this argument, though, are both ridiculous...Lansing, quite honestly, may not have been the best candidate for the job had ISU done a national search...you just never know. But in no way is hiring Lansing a commitment to mediocrity. He, through recruiting and coaching, is every bit as responsible for the recent turn for the better as is McKenna, imo. It's just that none of us know if he can handle the big seat...head coaching is quite a bit different than being an assistant coach.

Congratulations to Coach Lansing. I am excited to see what he could do. As for a national search, it is June 14 folks. The only prayer we had of luring some bigger name in here at this late hour is if Izzo takes the Cavaliers job, maybe we go after one of his assistants, or when the dominoes fall from MSU hiring someone. IMHO, we cannot afford to sit around and wait on that. Remember folks, it takes a community, so let's all get behind Lansing...

Given MSU's past hiring practices for MBB -- wouldn't Izzo's replacement come off his own staff??

So, if we really want Montgomery off Izzo's staff (when Izzo goes to the Cavs...) then we're competing WITH MSU for the same coach (unless I've mis-understood your logic...)

Just wondering if Lansing will run back to Alford as the other chickenshit did to Altman? No really I say lets play thispout and see how it runs but if Lansing screws up this year he is gone and we look for a real coach

So, you want to treat Lansing as an 'interim coach?'

I'm thinking Lansing job history goes:

1990 USD graduate
1991-93 USD grad ass't / ass't
1993-95 Des Moines Roosevelt High coach
1995-99 Ind State ass't
1999-2006 Iowa ass't
2007-2010 Ind State assoc. head coach

Am I missing something from his resume?

Are you this negative all the time? How do you get through your day? I feel for you man...

I don't think he should be "interim". I think his resume speaks very well for him coming into this position:
1. He knows ISU--no learning curve from an administrative standpoint.
2. He knows the MVC--no learning curve in preparation for Valley opponents, or the travel schedule.
3. He knows recruiting in the Midwest.
4. He knows the current players/recruits.

The only question I really have is with regard to what direction Lansing will go with regard to actual "on the court" items. Because he has been an assistant/associate coach within several different systems, it will be interesting to see what kind of "flavor" we will have on the court.

How the hell do you figure I am negative because I am pissed That this jerk off screwed Indiana State University ? If you are pleased this is happening I would have to doubt your allegiance.

ron prettyman was on indy radio this afternoon....

jmv show on the indy espn station...he said that he wanted to hire someone quickly since they are in the middle of summer recruiting period....and that he had gotten the okay from the powers-that-be to have an expedited search......he said then that he hoped to have someone hired by the end of the week....a few hours later, they sent out the release that there would be a news conference on tuesday.....

two things.....

some thoughts....

number one.....if greg had not been hired, my guess is that they would have had two positions to fill....since greg had been the runnerup the last time, losing out to mckenna, and if he hadnt gotten the job this time...

my guess is that he would have left isu....if that would have happened, his wife, who is an assistant athletic director and the senior women's athletics administrator, would have most likely left as well.....

and number two.....with mckenna deciding to leave isu so late in the year...
kevin leaves knowing that isu would want to hire somebody quickly to take his place at this late date....had he left earlier.....that would have given isu an opportunity to have a longer search process......as it is now...they wanted to get somebody on board and in charge asap.....

*sigh*

Am I bummed? Yes.
Am I pissed? No. In the end, basketball is a game.
Did he put the University in a tough spot? Yes.
Did he "screw us"? No, if he'd left in August/September he'd have screwed us.

It's terrible that you think THIS determines my allegiance. I'd think that my allegiance would be determined by things such as academic integrity/alumni outreach and support/etc.; not by men's basketball coaches...but to each their own. Clearly we don't see anywhere close to eye to eye on this, so this will be my last reply to you on this topic.

Greg's got just as good a resume as most coaches who would be interested in our program. We aren't going to attract someone from a major D-I school at this point. We just aren't at that point. We can attract a number of assistants, some lower division head coaches, and some other various and sundry applicants. We aren't going to get Duke assistants, UNC assistants, or successful mid-major head coaches. Given the constraints that our place in the college basketball pecking order places on us, the timeframe given us since our former coach ditched us right as summer recruiting was heating up, and the historical state of our program, Greg has just about the best resume we would see.

Plus, and this is big, he's won at every stop he's had. He was on hand to turn our program around in the late '90's, he helped lead Iowa through its best years with Alford (and when he left, so did Iowa's success), and he was here again for the rebuilding of our program, which is undeniably on the right track. The guy knows what it takes, that much is obvious. Don't discard his experience just because he is already at ISU.

Plus, with this much of his career invested at ISU, when he is successful here, he is less likely to jump ship at the first offer that comes his way. I hope Greg is one of our greatest coaches ever. If that comes to pass, I would guess we'll be waving goodbye to him as he embarks on a career as a head coach at a BCS school, and not as he heads somewhere else to be an assistant.

Greg really presents a pretty good package for Indiana State. He's a winner, and he deserves our support. He'll have his five year contract to prove me right or wrong. Until we know for sure, we should all get behind our coach.

as i mentioned before.....

i've known greg for a long time....i think he'll do a good job...i'm happy that he's going to get his chance to show what he can do as the head coach now.....

Lansing is the only logical choice

Greg Lansing is the only logical candidate for the head coaching position. He has shown his allegiance to ISU, has been the chief recruiter and usually conducts practices. If I am not mistaken, he is the primary reason most of the current players and staff are at Indiana State. I may be missing someone but I believe Coach Cunningham, Coach Altman's son and Koang Douloney are the only members of the roster and staff to whom Coach McKenna can lay primary claim.

Greg has experience under head coaches Sherman Dillard, Royce Waltman, Steve Alford and Kevin McKenna. He seems to have made friends with coaches in many sports over the years.

Greg's wife Angie was an outstandng track athlete at ISU, graduated in accounting and currently is ISU's athletic business manager and senior women's adviser. She is a special person and a great asset to the entire program. Greg's brother-in-law, Michael Menser, was an outstanding basketball player for the Sycamores and now is an assistant basketball coach at Terre Haute North.

Congratulations, Greg. You have my unequivocal support.

I am prepared to give Lansing the benefit of the doubt. Although, I must admit last night when I was on here reading about McKenna I thought to myself, "please god don't let it be an assistant, go out and get a name".......oh well. I really don't see Lansing doing much for the program after this season. As I have said before, I believe this will be a special season for the Sycamores.....possible NCAA berth. However after the 2011 season I think we will begin our crawl toward the basement of the MVC. I hope to god I am wrong. New coach by 2014 is my prediction.

Jeez. Give the guy a chance. BTW, I've been told there will be a "nice surprise" at the press conference tomorrow.

Many of us on this board were rooting for Greg three years ago. Thank to K-mac for sure but time to move on. Eddie, don't take this wrong but your brother moved on and we do as well. Although I don't know Greg well, I am 100% behind him. At this time, it was the perfect decision. RP won't screw this up. Get behind him boys, because this could be a special season if GL can pull it off. GO TREES~
