To become the top assistant to Larry Cole. His son Matt Cole just took a coaching job in the state of Wisconsin and Wayton will take the vacated spot.
Besides being a personal friend of mine and me being very happy for him personally, I should stress this is a BIG loss for Indiana State. Wayton leaves as one of the top assistants in D1 Track and Field.
If I've said it once I've said it 1,000 times. Indiana State has got to find a way to pay these assistant track coaches more money to keep them around long term. My former coaches that I have a great deal of respect for Gartland and McNichols are not getting any younger. I would just like to see a plan (even if it's a behind closed doors plan) put in place to keep these guys involved in the program. The long term success of the program depends on it.
I am sad to see Wayton leave ISU, but very pleased he will be staying in Terre Haute.
