Here are is comments on the Sycamores being picked 2nd:
2. Indiana State – The Sycamores are going to be good. With nearly everyone of consequence returning, they ought to be.
My concern is how to replace Aaron Carter’s role in the offense. Carter was best known as a 3-point (often 4-point) threat, but what he really provided the Sycamores last season was a dual shooting-driving threat that broke down opposing defenses. No one else on the team did both as well as Carter did as that versatility is going to be missed. Also missed will be Jake Kelly’s defense. When healthy (and motivated), he defended as well as anyone.
I’m less worried about the defense — ISU collectively defended better than any team in the MVC last year — than I am about replacing that dual shooting-driving threat. Dwayne Lathan can do it, but he needs to improve his ball-handling, decision-making and his outside shooting. Koang Doluony has the same skill set as Carter, and is much bigger to boot, but will he be healthy and can he return to the flashes of form he had during his freshman season?
That concern puts the Sycamores a tad below the Jays in my eyes, but not by much. Carl Richard, Jake Odum, Jordan Printy, Myles Walker, Steve McWhorter, R.J. Mahurin, Lathan, Doluony and the Eitels are a heck of a returning nucleus. Redshirt freshman Jake Kitchell gives ISU that sort of Jay Tunnell-type of player who can bang inside or spread the defense with a decent outside shot.
You know me … I never put too much on incoming players, but Justin Gant, Brandon Burnett and Devonte Brown are all capable of contributing (if none of them redshirt).
