Redshirt freshman guard Grant Gibbs is leaving the Gonzaga men’s basketball team and he’s expected to transfer to a school closer to his Midwest roots.

“Grant has decided to pursue other options and we wish him well in his future endeavors,” head coach Mark Few said in a Gonzaga release.

Gibbs averaged 2.2 points and 1.9 rebounds last season. He played in 24 games, averaging 9.3 minutes. His lone start was against Davidson in the Battle in Seattle when senior Matt Bouldin (concussion) couldn’t play. Gibbs had two points and a career-high eight rebounds in 29 minutes.

After a standout career at Linn-Mar High in Marion, Iowa, Gibbs had scholarship offers from Gonzaga, Iowa, Iowa State, Wisconsin, Northern Iowa and Indiana State.

Some of those schools, as well as Creighton, could be transfer options for Gibbs, who was rated the 17th-best point guard and the 96th-best overall prospect in the Class of 2008.

Gibbs redshirted as a freshman at Gonzaga after having surgery to repair a torn labrum in his shoulder.

Gonzaga has two guards joining the program this fall and two guards have verbally committed in the 2011 class.

Didn't we have someone from Linn Marr High before? That school sounds really familiar.

He may be a possible transfer, but do we want him? I don't know if it's true or not, or it's just the way I feel.....but we've taken enough hopeful stragglers and and lost puppy projects through the years....and 2.2 ppg and 1.9 rbpg......those stats sure don't say much....let Iowa take him.

The kid suffered thru injuries his first season...I think the coaches like the kid. Posts like this won't help our cause...

That torn labrum and the recovery probably kept him from having a great first season back. If the staff thinks he can contribute. I say go for him.

So im assuming he will have to sit out this season. Jake Kelly is a senior, so i say go get him and he will have another year to recover from his injury and will be at full strength and ready to go.

We wanted him out of high school, so if we can get him - GET HIM!!!

Welcome to ISU, Grant!!! (a little optimistic? So shoot me...)

That's too bad. I'm going to go out and say UNI will likely be the school since one of his other finalists was Iowa State as he really liked Coach McDermott.

Looks like posts like these won't actually have an effect on anything at all... Good because I was thinking the exact same thing, of course if he goes to UNI or Creighton I could eat those words one day. I mean let me say this much - if he's not coming to Indiana State then fine by me, but stay away from the other Valley schools. I don't care what he did at Gonzaga, the less the UNI's and Creightons of the world have to work with the better.

Look on the bright side - we have an extra scholarship for next season still in the bag, that's a really good thing to have at this point.

Double-edged sword. We want the conference to be good, but not too much competition.

I agree, it's good for the MVC when good recruits choose MVC schools, regardless of whether it's ISU or another school. It's a matter of keeping up with the Joneses.

Whew! Thank goodness he's looking at other schools other than ISU and not this opinion forum. LOL. I doubt if he knows that this round-table even exists....and if he did, he probably got a good laugh out of my lil post...

And if he really thought Gotta Hav's position meant something.....then I guess if he wanted to man-up and prove me wrong....he'd be in Prettyman's office saying....."That dang Gotta Hav on Sycamore Pride....I'm going show him, where's my scholarship offer!"

Sleep tight, don't let the bedbugs bite.

ahahah ROLF - "That dang Gotta Have on sycamore pride" lol That's pretty funny stuff...

Maybe trying to get back to posting on this site was a bad idea...carry on...I hope you're able to find faults in all the recruits cuz I'm sure they're gonna want to know what to work on. GPA...vertical...jumper...FT's...defense...PPG...rebounding ability...solid citizen...quickness...court savvy...hair style...height...I'm sure there's something wrong w/ the next guy too so fire away when ready.

Eddie, don't let a few run you off. There are a lot of people on this board who are good people, but there are definitely a few who like to play the "who can be the biggest man on a message board" game...it's kind of ridiculous, but at the same time, maybe they like finding faults in everyone else because they have so many of their own.

On the topic of Gibbs; quite honestly, things that are said here will probably never enter a recruit's mind, and this should be a place for us to discuss things without worrying about hurting someone's feelings. If an internet message board post runs a player off, do they really have the mental fortitude to deal with a hostile crowd in conference play? However, mindless knocking of a player without ever having seen him or knowing his individual situation are just dumb. And if a player isn't good enough to play here but we don't want him to go anywhere in the MVC, how come we aren't winning the MVC every year? IMO, if you're worried about a player going to Creighton or UNI because you don't want to see him two or three times a year, you should want him on your team. Either that or you're just a buffoon who likes to complain about anything and everything while straddling the fence on every topic so that you can point out how right you were in hindsight...but hey, to each their own.

Personally, if the coaching staff likes him and thinks he's a good fit, I trust that judgment. I would think adding him would make us even more guard heavy than we already seem to be, but I don't coach the team; and as long as they continue to improve, I don't care if he recruits the hamburgler.
