Bally #50

The JSW Level
I am likely functioning on 90% of my brainpower today so indulge me a bit. I have a few observations I would like to share about Indiana State after spending a couple of wonderful days in Terradice, as many of you like to call it. Something has truly changed about ISU. I'll figure it out as I go but I can tell you, we have NOTHING to apologize for when it comes to our alma mater. I have always felt strongly about the traditions at ISU but felt that some people didn't see it the same way I did. All those Homecomings I have frequented have included wonderful moments with the many friends I have accumulated over the years, and we always had fun, no matter the outcome of the game, how many people showed up at the Bally, or however you would judge these things.

This year was different. It seemed that so many of those friends came back with a purpose. Obviously the football team and the coaches had a purpose. Everything meant something to our faculty and administration, to our student athletes, to our students and most importantly to our alumni. Even my fraternity brothers had a purpose and couldn't wait to get to town.

Weather has often been an issue at Homecoming because the weather is so fickle in late October or early November. Mother nature cooperated obviously this weekend but more importantly, the administration listened to our pleas to move it up, and they did. Yes, rooms were overpriced and almost impossible to get, but the alumni answered the calls and paid more for less. My room was a disaster and at $100 a night... but who cared? Move over Covered Bridge festival.....ISU is here to stay.

Tent city and all that happens around it was better than ever. I love it that the band cruises around and serenades everyone. Always have. It's just the way you do it at ISU. I love the way it was organized too, the amount of people that enjoyed the beautiful day and all the festivities and even my fraternity announced a triumphant return to the campus we all love and have not been apart of for 7-8 years.

My prediction of 8,000 plus at the game was right on, the fans were "into" it from the start, the band was their usual perfection, and a close friend of mine was presented a Distinguished Alumni award. Pretty cool. I think the whole Black jersey thing by Trent and his staff-- was a sensational idea and it reflected in the teams play from the moment the whistle sounded to start the game. I was trying to describe the Black, White and Blue jerseys that I would like to see the Trees wear.....and there they were, right in front of me yesterday. They looked awesome. I sat directly behind the mother of the Illinois State quarterback so this was a "must" win for me from the get-go. The team didn't let me down and played to near perfection. The mom didn't say too much but was quite pleasant. (and she laughed at our stupid jokes).

Post-game at the Bally brought out dozens upon dozens of my brothers and old friends and the fun continued. Jammed into this tight schedule was the All-Greek party at Hulman Center that featured a great band and 750 of my closest friends in a wild tribute to the movie Animal House. Kudos must go out to my old, old friend John Newton (who yes, is a "tad" older than me), and to the wonderful organization they had to run such a massive event and do it so well. The pride shown by the alumni of our PROUD institution was prevalent ALL WEEKEND. Yes, we did have a purpose and EVERYONE wanted to show it. Indiana State doesn't have to take a back to seat to anyone. Yes, we're no IU but frankly, isn't that why most of us come to ISU anyhow?

Dr. Dan Bradley has brought back the pride and purpose of our alumni and has accomplished more in his two or so years than ANY president in the school history. Ron Prettyman has brought back the pride and purpose to our athletic department as well. The band marched to a quicker step, the team blocked harder and threw the ball further, the administration has made the effort to greet more, and listen better at the same time. There is a reason there are 11,400 students on campus and trust me, it will only get better. I have always been proud to be a SYCAMORE, but Homecoming 2010 made me prouder than I have ever been. It was a wonderful weekend and I simply want to thank everyone that made it possible. My 43rd out of 44 was by far, the best ever. It's a great time to be a Tree~

Thanks for sharing your thoughts. Like people have been saying on here for a couple of years--win games and the fans will come. Some of the fans have always come and have always been and will always be Sycamore fans. The newer ones just showing up now because the team is no longer "an embarrassment"? Keep coming back, the players feed off of the crowd. I have only been a Sycamore fan for three years, but this is exactly what my son (and us as parents) had hoped for when we first heard Coach Miles talking about turning the program around, and him being a big part of that. I know just a short couple of years ago after the 56-0 trouncing at Western that his feelings were at the bottom of the barrel, particularly considering that he turned an offer from Western down to come to ISU. We had long talks and a lot of soul searching about persevering and sticking to the course that the coaches were taking them on. Then yesterday, coming out as a captain, getting his first pick and double digit tackles, clowning on the sideline in the 4th quarter when the game was decided, singing the fight song in front of the crowd (and then singing it again at Stables after dinner with the piano guy playing the fight song); after all of the very, very hard work...it makes it all worthwhile and validates what you hoped for. This is a special group of kids that have bought into everything the coaches ask of them, and they will continue to fight and build on the success. Thank you to Dr. Bradley, Mr. Prettyman, the coaching staff, and the players past and present.

We are very proud to be (relatively) new Tree fans!

Great post. I was really impressed this weekend as well. Attendance was great, but still wish we'd get a few more to join us in the stadium, and stick around until the end even if it is a route in our favor. It was fun watching the players join together at the end and sing to the crowd. Can't say enough about how awesome yesterday's victory was.

I think that really hits the nail on the head in the point I was trying to drive home in a conversation we had late last week. I understand many of you are diehard Sycamore fans (that is obvious), but some of you don't get to drive through campus every single day on your way to work and see what is happening. I still am very connected to the school (makes it easy being not so far removed from college and still in Terre Haute), but this has always been a great place to be but arguably never been a better time to be here.

Great comments and an excellent description of the festivities. Glad you were able to make it back and experience it for yourself.

I think extending a big thank thumbs up to the mayor of Terre Haute Duke Bennett (whom for the record I didn't vote for), he came into to office with a bit of momentum behind him and he continued to carry the momentum that Kevin Burke started. I don't care who runs against him - he will have my vote. He's done a fantastic job and he needs to be not left off the list (ever growing) of people who deserve some credit.

Tent city has continued to grow ever since Trent Miles became head coach at Indiana State, not that he is the reason that this thing has grown to what it is today. But one day we will look back and he will be one of the people to point toward. It really is just a fantastic environment. A friend said to me later that night while watching college football, "think of what it's like to have that kind of environment we had today x 100 at every home football game". And I said very true but you got to keep things in perspective, it's not about us becoming any of that, we are creating our own identity as a fan base, as a community, as a fan base and as a university. It's unrealistic to expect that the people of Terre Haute have the means to put together a huge tailgating experience every weekend. The average income in Terre Haute alone is some 4 thousand dollars lower than the national average and 2 thousand lower than the state average. This is a "poor" community as a whole, tailgating and going to college games can be an expensive form of entertainment. This is not an excuse, just truth of the matter - I wouldn't be quick to dismiss it as a factor to why attendance numbers at any of our universities events hover around embarrassing at times.

Darien Westerfield and Co. have a great thing going with the "I Club" offering former athletes discounted tickets and 2 free tickets into the game on homecoming. What an outstanding way to get your former athletes back to Terre Haute. Myself (with the help of many), hosted our second annual track and field/cross country alumni tent (first time in tent city) and it was very well received and we have vowed to expand on that again this year. I would hope that other former athletes would organize a similar type of tailgating event for the sport that they participated in.

That's really all I got for tonight - I could go on and on and on. I am really happy with the way the weekend went. I saw the facebook status of ISU football player freshman, Dillion Painter (Fort Wayne Snyder) "damn it feels good to be a tree" Dillion my thoughts exactly!

Juts to echo Bally's comments:

The things that I saw this weekend, the pride, the excitment and the involvement was amazing! Dr. Bradley and his lovely wife Cheri were wonderful, Chris Hancock and his staff in the alumni office did a wonderful job, Ron Prettyman and his staff also were amazing and I can't forget Coach Miles! What a great and exciting atmosphere for the game!!! Congrats Sycamores...what a wonderful win!!

As for the Its All Greek To Me event at the Hulman Center. I had a wonderful time, I enjoyed the entire event. It was well organized, it went off very well and the turnout was great! The formula works and will only get better each year.

All in all, it was a great homecoming...it is possible that the weather was too nice? Because I thought I was going to die from heat stroke at one point...our tent was so darn hot!! But I guess that is a good problem to have!

From an ISU-Red fan whose team got whopped 59-24:

Great tailgating atmosphere. This is the first time I have been to their stadium since the last time we played there. I really like what they have done with the endzone facade outside the stadium. For those of you that don't know, their stadium sits on a large mostly grass lot that gives plenty of space for tailgates. They do not charge to park, and there was very minimal police presence, probably due to The Walk going on and all cops needed there, but I didn't see anyone getting out of hand today in our neck of the woods. Other than the severely disappointing game itself it was a great day.

It's good the hear this from a visitor. Impressive comments.

You know, it is great to hear good things from our fans and alumni but you know, when it comes from the opponents, it is even sweeter. The Illinois State fans I sat next to were also very complimentary as well. Nice to hear~
