Here I am. I just got home from work. It's 8:00 am on Homecoming Morning. It looks like it will be a cool but very nice day in Terre Haute. What will today's attendance be. I don't know how to do polls so just type a number.

My guess is 8,536.

Was just over 7000 -- ok, but disappointing from my perspective. Down from a couple of years ago. Nice article in the Game Day newspaper in Terre Haute about the record crowd of over 18,000 several years ago.
Too bad so many ISU students and Terre Haute residents are missing seeing such great ISU sport teams these past few years.
Meanwhile down in Bloomington ........................
And up in West Lafayette ..................
And over in Muncie .................

yes..............good one.....ha ha ha ha

I think the weather hurt. The only time all day I thought it wasn't too cold for the whole family was standing on the south side of the stadium that was blocking the wind. Looking back I probably wouldn't have brought the girls. Sitting in the shade all day was pretty uncomfortable for them I think.

They need to move the homecoming game up to a noon or 1 p.m. start and sell alcohol then you might see 10,000 plus. It was a nice crowd to start, but half of them left at halftime and by the end of the game it was one-third of that. 3 p.m. is just way too late when you have several thousand getting drunk on the walk by 10 a.m. or earlier.

They sold alcohol at the Alumni test before the game -- did not see many taking advantage of it -- I don't think this is really much of an incentive to increase attendance.
A few years ago folks on this site were saying "win and they will come" ------- well that's not worked out really well either.
We are who we are ......if the basketball team is playing a top 5 team (WSU) or Big Ten team we might get 8000 + in Hulman Center. Other than that I don't see us ever drawing much more than we do now.
Next week what is probably the best FCS team in the nation (I know they've lost a couple) -- a team that would probably rank in the Top 25 in the FBS and has won a bunch of national championships comes to Terre Haute ------- hope I'm wrong but I'll bet 6000 or less for the game.

Some very successful former players including Michael Menser who recently tweeted a photo of the Hulman Center during his senior season with the caption "win and they will come" would probably disagree with you.

But personally had the "attendance" debate on here with everyone so personally don't need to rehash this.

I thought it was a fine crowd and an excellent tailgating crowd.

Amen. Let's celebrate the die-hards that were there and enjoyed a great day and great game, instead of bemoaning those who didn't (and probably never will) come in to see it. Their loss.

Their loss until lack of interest kills the program. Then we'll all wonder what could have been done differently...

I have some time so:
season / average attendance/record/previous season
2007 / 3115 / 0-11 / 0-11
2008 / 3885 / 0-12 / 0-11
2009 / 4540 / 1-10 / 0-12
2010 / 5478 / 6-5 / 1-10
2011 / 6567 / 6-5 / 6-5
2012 / 6386 / 7-4 / 6-5
2013 / 5422 / 1-11 / 7-4
2014 / 5660 / 7-5(8-6) / 1-11
2015 3 game average 6,049

I think we are moving in the right direction. I'd like to build regular attenders rather than get people out only if they think you are winning. I just cant imagine a huge spike unless we come in with a playoff type game week 11 with great weather.
(ive typed 2 posts and accidentally deleted them and had you read them you would totally agree with everything i said)

Love you guys, but your "satisfaction" with Saturday's crowd says it all ...............

"We are who we are"

To suggest that "we are who we are" because we are satisfied with Saturday is an absurd assertion.

Simply chosing to reflect on the positive and not rehash a conversation we have had over and over on here has nothing to do with anything.

If this forum was full of people who did nothing but bitch and moan about attendance woes but did nothing to help then I'd agree with you. How you going to tell people who not only attend games, buy season tickets, help host almuni events that "we are who we are" because of us. Suggesting our attitude about Saturday has something to do with the problem is insulting. How many times do we have to talk about this issue on here to prove to you that we were not satisfied with it rather just not dwelling on the negative.

There also could be a cultural dynamic associated with the decline in attendance. "Back in the Proverbial Day" in the late 1960's and early 70's there were in excess of 15,000 attending football games. "Campus Review" was the most competitive and hard fought event on campus. Homecoming Floats were taken very seriously. Society as a whole was vastly different. Besides watching the 3 local TV channels, getting on the "party line" and going to the Bally, athletic events is where most on campus went for entertainment. All the Fraternities and Sororities were engaged. It could well be generational. Having been 35 + yr volunteers and staunch supporters of ISU we've found ourselves losing interest in activities that were once of paramount importance. We have great seats and have been to 43- 500's in a row. One day we asked ourselves, is it worth the effort. After 25 years, same with Colt season tickets. One asks, where would I rather spend my time? As much as we want to see ISU be successful and victorious, we ask ourselves is it worth driving 190 miles round trip for an athletic event which we've seen too many times to recount. It's a matter of prioritizing ones time and place in life. What's disappointing about attendance at ISU athletic events is the lack of local support. ISU athletics is a really good value and is very family friendly. The tickets are almost free and the environment is terrific. Local residence are missing out on a great opportunity. I guess you can call me "Old Man Shootingsycmore"

We have been wondering,....and wondering,.....and wondering some more. That was kind of my point. If there was a solution to be found or discussed on this board, we would have found it by now, as many times as this topic has popped up.

Well, it's not like we haven't proposed dozens of ideas that might make a difference. But no one at ISU wants to do the heavy lifting...

I am convinced that we will never see 10,000 fans inside of Memorial Stadium. I'm not trying to make this another "we need a new stadium" thread but I truly don't think we can get to the 10,000 mark inside that stadium. I came to this realization last year at the homecoming game. We were 4-1 going into the game with EXCITING wins over Northern Iowa and in-state rival Ball State (not to mention a dominate home performance against Liberty). We were playing a great team in Illinois State and from what I can remember the weather was pretty good. If we couldn't get close to 10,000 for a game like that, then i'm certain it just isn't going to happen. Until something happens with Memorial we are only going to draw 4,500-7,500.

As I was sitting there freezing my ass off when the game was ending and the stands being completely barren around me, I honestly have firmly moved into dome territory. I also don't think we'll ever see 10k in the stadium unless you give fans creature comforts because even winning football doesn't sell.

a agree with dome football. I also think im over watching teams play on grass. Im not interested on how good someone on the school's staff can grow grass. Id like people to be able to run like they do when its not raining.

Yes. Fully in favor of this dome conversation.

Two birds, one stone! It should double as an indoor track as well. I am in support of it either way, but it should no doubt have dual purposes. When we had this conversation over a year ago I remember quite a bit of opposition at that time - I think many were easily convinced it was the best option.

Northern Illinois reached the Orange Bowl a couple of years ago and they field a winning team every year (have even had Heisman hopefuls) and they still can't fill their smaller stadium. No, winning isn't all it takes. Would be interesting to see what would happen though if we won an FCS title. I bet coming close last year still isn't enough for Illinois State to fill their stadium.
