Register NOW to join our community of die-hard Sycamore fans.

I'm just going to leave this here as I get ready to go to bed. I think we all appreciate trying to make the community a better place, but spending whatever amount on "build it and they will come projects" is just not smart. There's barely over 100K people in Vigo County which means that each person would be on the hook for around $2000 for this project alone. Oh sure, the county will get some grants, but the taxpayers will still be on the hook. Not to turn this into a political thing, but two out of three commissioners in this county are Republican which would have been unheard of not too long ago, and I promise that most of the people that voted R didn't do so because they wanted the county to blow money and hike taxes. Let's be honest with each other, if the people of VC wanted the county to blow money on unnecessary projects and ultimately raise their taxes they would have happily voted for the property tax hike for the schools, which failed miserably. Also it should be strongly noted that "our children" attend those schools while this sports park would be mostly used by "out of town children".
1, actually all 3 of us are republicans. And B, we will not be raising taxes to do this project, if so I wouldn't have signed onto it. And D, there was a whole lot of reasons why the school referendum failed.

Must've struck a nerve. I know you're probably buddies with the commissioners, since you act like you know everyone, and I think you said your wife is a teacher, so that likely explains it.

I happen to strongly believe in fiscal responsibility. Saying that if I don't support every single idea that the city/county government or Greg Gibson comes up with means that I'm against "progress" is just nonsense. 200 million dollars isn't exactly chump change. Pretty sure INDOT built all of 641 for 250 million.
Again, it's not 200 million. Closer to 160 million, but still a lot of money. 641 is not a good comparison as construction costs have sky rocketed in the past 3 years.

I'll take your word for it on the 160 million. I got the 200 million figure from the local news.

We'll likely just have to agree to disagree here, but I'm just not a very big fan of these 'build it and they will come' type projects (obviously). The convention center sits empty most of the time, the food and beverage tax was raised (or added) to help pay for it, and that project was only $25M. Not sure if that was a city or county project, or perhaps both.

This was before you were elected I'm sure, but I heard over and over again for years that we needed a new jail because the current (now old) one was overcrowded. Now $60M and a new jail later we have the same exact problem (overcrowding) as you stated on the "Old Mill Dam / kayak" thread.

Can't help but wonder if this project will actually turn out how it is envisioned. What happens if this massive project doesn't draw in the amount of people the county thinks it will? Another concern for me is that this is a massive expense that appears to mostly benefit non-residents. Hotels and restaurants may sell more rooms / food, and maybe the casino gets more traffic (not sure if parents can take kids in there?), but I fail to see how this massively helps local taxpayers here. From the info I have, this feels like nothing more than a business venture by the county government.

You may want take business 101 to start.

Did you know that every dollar spent by those “non-residents” @ hotels, restaurants, shopping, local coffee shops, etc. brings in tax revenue for the government? Those increases can go toward improving infrastructure/roads and guess what the best part is??? That money is coming from those “non-residents”!

Perhaps you need better news sources... INDOT spent $150M for 641

https://www.wthr.com/article/news/l...ears/531-3e6377c4-c7e3-4e3d-b3c1-6722b9cb828d

https://www.in.gov/indot/projects/s...he SR 641 Terre Haute Bypass was $150 million.

And $150M still screams "Little Ralphie Scopo Concrete Co."... hell, it must have been delivered by Jimmy Hoffa's finest

Is the Vigo Co. jail overcrowded b/c of the idiots in Vigo Co.? Or because Vigo houses idiots from Parke, Clay, Sullivan, etc, etc? Several Indiana counties have 'overbuilt' their county jails for the revenue stream...

Thanks for the updated accurate numbers. I was going off of memory, but I guess it was cheaper than I remembered. I at least got the X50 part right anyways 😂.

Pretty sure Sullivan, Clay, etc were housing some of our idiots for a while. Not sure what the current situation is other than we are supposedly overcrowded again. Maybe too many pot heads are trying to sneak in the good stuff from Illinois, and we all know how dangerous they are to society. Nothing more dangerous than someone that has the munchies.

Yes, and part of business 101 is also understanding that if a $160M investment doesn't work out as planned, you just wasted a ton of money.

And if it does work out???
Well I definitely hope that it does work out because they're going to be spending a lot of money on it. The Hoosier Dome was $77M and it's still not paid for (final payment in 2037). Does the county have the cash on hand to pay for this or are they going into a bunch of debt to pay for it?

I don’t know how to nicely say that you have no vision for the future and what it takes to grow as a community. In addition, you have no idea the level of local planning taking place and the amount of stakeholders involved. You are speaking strictly from an economics position and that’s fine - nothing wrong with that - but you’re just speaking in terms of generalities without even knowing basic facts. Quite frankly, based on this and past conversations you don’t care to know the facts your mind is already made up.

As Mark originally stated and I stated before they are hoping that a large portion of the READI funds can help make this facility become a reality.

This is from READ 2.0 the last round of grant funding that was awarded. I again remind you - if Terre Haute / Wabash Valley doesn’t go get these funds other communities will and we will continue to fall further and further behind.

I can assure that the business community at large with very little opposition is behind these projects. But what do they know - just a bunch of fiscally irresponsible individuals. 2 of the 3 commissioners successfully own and operate businesses and have raised a family. I’m sure they are not actively looking to make decisions to bankrupt the county/city.

And to be clear it’s not just local business leaders they’ve sent out a couple different surveys to the community to get input from the general public. My point is - this isn’t 3 commissioners sitting in a room going why don’t we build a sports facility that will generate hotel/restaurant and revenue from out of town folks. That’s not the deal here at all - a lot of people (not me personally) have worked really hard on how are we going to bring these projects here and how are we going to pay for them. 15 or so years ago the massive expansion of the Terre Haute children’s Museum, was thought to be a waste of money - the place is a big attraction for young families in the Wabash Valley, It takes vision and people willing to act on it.

On one hand, you routinely say there is nothing to do in Terre Haute and on the other, you complain about everything people are doing to try to make the community better. You can't have it both ways.

Meistro- When is the hopeful opening year are shooting for, for the complex? As a parent of two kids who participate in 2 travel sports, I applaude and encourage you. When a small to mid size tournament brings in $2-3M a weekend and the fields are rented thru the week for practices by local teams, then the impact to the economy for food, hotel, shopping and lodging- it is huge and some don't get that and never will. If promoted and booked right if you have baseball/softball and soccer you will have a tournament available almost every weekend I see it in Evansville at Deaconess Sports park, I see it in Indy, I see it in Bowling Green KY. KEEP GOING and do it right!! Maybe put in a Semi parking lot that overlooks the fields for 96 that will make him happy.

It all depends on how much and when we get readi 2.0 funds. From what I understand, the city has the money to do the deming pool upgrades. So, I would think that should happen within a couple years. Local people have been working on the sports complex for 6-8 years I believe, and my guess is that you'd be looking at 2-4 years for the first phase (fieldhouse) to be complete.

^ I guess that answers that question. I was going to ask how much funding VC was going to get for the project, but apparently no one knows yet.

The Deming Pool upgrades will be great. I'll probably never use it, but you won't hear any complaints from me. That's something locals will actually be able to use and enjoy.

Of course you think it's great. You don't live here. That's been one of my major points.

But when he and his kids, those teams use it -- Terre Haute and the Wabash Valley GET THE TAX REVENUES

Ever hear of OPM? Other People's Money... If I can get YOUR money to raise MY tax revenues -- that's a GOOD thing

Any time a community can get "outside money" to be spent IN the community - it's a GOOD thing!

That's the FUNDEMENTAL reason why any city, town, county establishes an "economic development group," it's why chambers of commerce are created

Of course you think it's great. You don't live here. That's been one of my major points.

Why are you so cynical? What point does that make? You assume that people ONLY advocate for things that benefit them in some way shape or form. That’s so weird. Some people just want the best for Terre Haute in general.

Let’s do this for example… Griffin Bike Park. I don’t mountain bike, it just so happens to neighbor land I’ve leased for years for hunting and it’s made the once incredible hunting abysmal because of the amount of traffic in the park every day it’s pushed the deer to mostly relocate. That said, I am a HUGE advocate for everything the Griffin folks are doing in coordination with the county. Been a huge asset for the community but also for people traveling to Griffin for various races/events.

All of these projects (so many of them) are huge positives and make Terre Haute a better place to live, raise a family, relocate or just visit on a weekend.

NO I live in a city who already has a thriving sport facility and is seeing the benefits from it, Deaconess Sports Park/ Goebel Soccer complex AND I'm at many others EVERY weekend with my kids.
Im out of this thread, it's like trying to explain something to my 11 yr old. Knows everything doesn't listen and rolls her eyes when somebody talks to her. The list is long of some intelligent people on here who have tried to explain things to you on many posts and you won't listen or comprehend. I don't know why I thought i could get you to understand. Be sure to support the Terre Haute Economy when you are home from trucking. Best Wishes for YOUR Terre Haute Kid!
