We've been chewing on the starters but I think the bigger question is how will JB's 319 FGAs get split up this year. That accounted for just shy of 20% of the total shots taken last year. There is probably no greater opportunity available to the returners. Key took about 20% himself so he is likely to get a few but knowing his game I'd say the remaining roster will split them. How would you split them up?

When you toss in CWill and BK, there were over 500 FGA shot which was over 33% of the total attempts. Below is the total FGA from the major players last year:

Key - 323 FGA - 20%
Barnes - 319 FGA - 20%
LaRavia - 210 FGA - 13%
Neese - 188 FGA - 12%
Tre Williams - 181 FGA - 12%
C Williams - 141 FGA - 9%
Kessinger - 86 FGA - 5%

Bacote - 75 FGA - 5%
C Barnes - 54 FGA - 3%

Key is Key, and he isn't going to change. Do I want him too? Oh heck yes! He has the potential to take us to great places, only if he would put the offense on his shoulders and take on a Killer Instinct - No Holds Barred role...and take 350 -400 shots, but he won't.

Give Laravia 300 attempts
Neese about the same or fewer
Tre Williams way more - just so that every other team plays us honest on the inside
X-Factor Player One - Hankins?
X-Factor Player Two - Cobie Barnes?

Do I see Miller and or Howard taking a 200 total of shots between them this year? Geez I hope not....their job IMO, is to QB this team into getting others to score.

This is a great question/thread!

With seven newcomers, it'll be tough to speculate, but the grad transfers of Howard and Miller will certainly be in the mix for some of these FGs.

One would think that Cobie Barnes' shot attempts will increase (since he took so few last year).

I hope Key's shot attempts increase...I really hope he gets a little selfish (in a good way) with the ball this year. Intelligent selfishness.

LaRavia's got the green light.

Williams...tended to take good shots, seldom/if ever took shots that were out of his wheelhouse.

Neese...I don't expect to see a big jump in his points per game, but I do expect to see improvement in his FG and 3pt percentages.

We need to at least replace 23.2 PPG, and really that number is probably more like 25 when you factor in Christian Williams became more involved in the offense as the season went on. He only averaged 7 PPG on the season, but I certainly believe was more important to the offense later in the year than 7 PPG worth. Also, this assumes the offense is aspiring to only be as good as last year's in total scoring.

  1. I expect LaRavia to increase from 10 last year to 15 or so this year. That leaves 20 left overall to find from the missing 25.
  2. Key needs to up his scoring even more in his Senior season, and go from 16 to 19. His scoring actually dropped off a bit last year, so I know he has it in him to get close to 20 PPG. That leaves 17 to replace.
  3. Tre Williams becomes a near double-double candidate each game, and ups his scoring from 7 to 12. That leaves 12 to replace.
  4. Cooper's scoring output has to help, as well. I don't know if I expect a huge increase, but he should go from 7 to 9. That leaves 10 overall.
  5. Cobie settles into a 7th man role and goes from 3 last year to 5 PPG in 2020-2021. That leaves 8.
  6. Bacote's minutes will be up, so by association is scoring will go from 3 to 6 PPG. That leaves 5.
  7. Howard and Miller combine for at least 10 PPG between the two of them. That puts us in the black by 5.
My overly blue glasses may be inflating Key, LaRavia and Tre's output for the year, but I don't think it's too outlandish. We also have Stephens, who will play some decent minutes to give us whatever he can offensively. Hankins will play, as well, and he can score the basketball.

Barnes also wasn't the most efficient scorer. So although he took 20% of the shots, he shot under 40% overall for the season. I think the harder things about his game to replace will be his free throw shooting, 2:1 assist to turnover ratio and swag.

He was nearly automatic from the free throw line, which is extremely important late in games...especially from the player who's handling the ball the most. He also was very good at minimizing mistakes with the basketball. That was probably the biggest improvement in his game over the 4 years. He went from being a heat-check shooter to an overall, well-rounded PG.

I also mentioned his swagger. His confidence. His attitude. We can complain about him playing hero ball too much at times, but that kid was never afraid to take a big shot. He played with an edge that I hope we can replace this year because every team needs a bit of irrational confidence.

This question is a bit too technical for me...

Obviously Key, Jake and Tre are going to take a few more shots and probably look to be a little more aggressive. I mean logic would suggest that the two freshman are going to have more confidence going into this season and that should allow them the freedom to take more shots and force the issue a little bit. So I expect the bulk of those shots to come from those 2. Jake didn't shoot many jump shots last year - I expect that to change this year.

As for the other guys - really hard to say as I haven't seen a practice or anything from them yet. I am less worried about where the scoring and FG attempts come from and more worried about our D and our ball protection. Last year - we took care of the basketball and we didn't kick it around for the first time in several years - maybe since JO. I don't know what the assist / TO #'s looked like to those teams in comparison but watching the games I get the feelings the numbers were much improved last year. That simply CAN NOT change!

CWilliams was a Def first player and he could guard a # of players. Who is going to come in and take on that role and take pride in it? We have alot of new faces and a lot of guys who are going to get an opportunity - who gets the most minutes will have nothing to do with points or FG's - it will be the player who takes care of the ball, shares the ball and plays good hard team D.
