Good idea, with the EXPOSURE of a revised & vibrant Terre Haute downtown bound to benefit ISU...Go for it!

It's finally happened...

Since the IHSAA is now 'shopping' around the State Finals, it's apparent that the multitude of small school coaches, ADs and Superintendents have achieved their version of 'Nirvana'

High School basketball has just been wheeled into the 'terminal' ward -- when will the Boys Finals follow?

Screw it -- have the boys play finals at the random 'semi-state' sites; since there hasn't been a true State Champion since 1997, the ihsaa should end the charade

Interesting quote for Sherman to say they would like the boys also, cant see the boys leaving Conseco however....

Great article, thanks for posting. I will get to all this state finals talk in a second. First I want to point out that if you continue reading the article under the "Track and Field" part - Indiana State recruit Max Tuttle of Bloomington North was named Mr. Track & Field by the Indy Star. I think that's significant enough that we should point that out also... lol

Now to the state finals - I would be really surprised if they were able to get the Boy's State Finals - they have a really good angle they can use with women's hoops attendance figures and all that stuff, they defiantly have something positive going on in that respect. They can't use that same angle on the men's side and ultimately that will hurt them. It would be a good thing for the city to host - I mean they already host the Cross Country state meets for both Boy's and Girl's - forgot that didn't you?

What a sad situation for the IHSAA. Once they sold out the Hoosier Dome for the championship game...now they are shopping the state finals around to arenas that seat less than 20,000. R.I.P. Best State Basketball Tournament in history!

from what i understand.....

only the girls state finals is in the offing......now there is talk among the media here in indy about hulman center being a possible site for a semistate round of games for the boys......

TJ, can you explain to me why they drifted away from Hulman Center in semi-states like they had done for decades? If I remember correctly, under the single-class championship, they came pretty much every other year.

Yes but for DECADES the Southern Semi-State was in it's rightful home -- Evansville. They lost it because they had the opportunity to host 1st/2nd round games of the Big Dance...

Terre Haute shouldn't have kept it as long as they did; they picked it up in 1983 and alternated with the Pocket City until 1997 (when the wheels fell off...)

mr bally man...that is correct sir.....

but when the class basketball situation arose...they moved many of the tournament sites back to high school facilities......and away from college on-campus venues.....

i loved having the sectionals, regionals and a rotating semistate at hulman center....our sports information office helped run the tournament...media-wise....we set everything up...had our own stat crews work the games...ran the media interview rooms....typed up post-game quote sheets for the writers...determined the media seating chart.....it was great!!!!!......

we got all sorts of compliments from the schools and the media...we treated the coaches and players and media just like it was a collegiate event...first class all the way.....we got a lot of positive comments from the coaches and the ihsaa for how we handled everything.....

one of the major reasons that terre haute kept the semistate for as long as we did....was because of the way we handled the media there.....we received a lot of compliments from the ihsaa....the media would contact the ihsaa about keeping terre haute in the rotation....we had media tell us that they weren't treated that well at evansville...ue didnt staff the games or didnt have much to do with the tournament there...until we did our thing...then the ue athletic department got more involved....i remember their sports information director, bob boxell, coming up one year to see exactly what we were doing and they weren't......

The reason that Terre Haute was able to keep the semi-state all those years was because Terre Haute did such an outstanding job of hosting the tournament. Terre Haute turned the semi-state from a couple of basketball games into an EVENT that really showcased the teams and schools. Evansville had to play catch up just to keep it every other year.

Sometimes, a little shake-up like that is a good thing...

Helps when the crowds can fit into high school gyms vs. Roberts Stadium, Hinkle, Mackey, Allen County's War Memorial...

All indiana high school sports should play with a black armband on their uniforms; esp the baskeball teams

I still think it is 2nd best arena in the state to watch basketball in (not including any H.S gyms), behind Conseco. With Hinkle obviously having the most atmosphere.

TJ, were you at HC when ISU hosted a first-round NCAA game?

mr bally man....no....

i was in high school then.....i think that was 1974 maybe?...not sure of the year.....it was like an ncaa semi regional....marquette and austin peay played...note dame was there too i think...cant remember who they played.....i do remember the cheer from austin pear...they had a guy by the name of fly williams...a sweet-shooting guard....their fans would cheer...."the fly is open....let's go peay"....lol.......

Tom, your are a "pup" compared to me. I guess I should avoid saying that I thought you were older than that! ;-) Your show "maturity" far beyond your age~

My grandma is always telling me stories about when she went to see Damon Bailey in HC. I just wish I could have been around to see it.

Trivia- Fly William played Football after College for the Dallas Cowboys actually caught aTD in a Superbowl. Great Athlete

I was in town that weekend - Ohio U. was the 4th team...their Theta Chi's slept on our living roon floor that Saturday night/Sunday morning - it was also Campus Revue (we were paired w/ the Chi O's) & the infamous "Streak Week" highlights on Friday night...doubt that there will EVER be another like it!

Al McGuire, Digger Phelps, Curt Gowdy - all in the 'Haute.

Thanks, "Animal," for getting those PRIME HC seats for us!

I was there for that game, Full house with people standing around the top....quite an impressive atmosphere......

Id love to see a semi state back in HC

I went to Ft. Wayne for the finals this year and they did a ok job with it, but I am concerned with the possibility of flooding being a issue some year as it has been in the past. I think Terre Haute would be a great host and it would be a great way to show the campus to a number of prospective students and their parents.
