Injury Update: Kylie Hutson was in Indy today and the stitches on the outside of her hand will be removed in a week, however she will not be able to compete in the MVC Championships.

She is being fitted for a customized protective glove that will allow her to attempt to defend her NCAA Outdoor National Title from last year. Her status should be considered probable at this point.

If I hear anything else I will let you all know.

What a weekend!!!!!!

Friday…..

Well…..what an up and down weekend for Kylie, her parents, teammates, coaches, and friends. Friday started off very shaky! We arrived at IU and got to see the new track and it was nice. The runways seemed fast and we had a massive tail wind out of the south. As Kylie started her warm-up and drills she just didn’t look the same as she normally does. After she felt lose and ready, she attempted to get on the runway so we could get her step. The first time down the runway I could tell that the hamstring and quad had not loosened up. She indicated to me that she was tight but wanted to continue to see if they would loosen up. As a coach I just about told her to shut it down because it was not worth pulling anything since the championship part of the season was coming but she insisted to go again. The next run looked better and every run after that got much better. She came into the competition at 4.05m and cleared it on her first attempt. The next two bars, 4.15m & 4.25m, she cleared on her first attempt as well. She asked the bar to be set at 4.36m which would be an outdoor season best for this year. On her second attempt she broke her first pole ever. Kylie was a little more than a foot under her take-off point and had no angle at takeoff and therefore over bent the pole and it broke. At this point I figured that she would want to go down a pole and push the standards all the way back. However she surprised me and said she wanted to go up a pole. The next time down the runway she planted the pole but did not attempt to clear the bar. On her third and final attempt she had a great plant/takeoff and smoked 4.36m. The bar went up to 4.45m, a new outdoor PR, and it would be a 2010 collegiate best. On her first attempt again she smoked it!!!! At this point she wanted a new overall PR, she had jumped 4.50m at the indoor NCAA Champions earlier this year so the bar was placed at 4.51m. She had an ok first attempt and with a few adjustments she easily cleared it on her second attempt. Once she cleared 4.51m we knew that she had taken 9 jumps in the competition and there was not going to be a whole lot left in the tank. She asked the official to place the bar at 4.61m, a new outdoor collegiate record. She had two decent jumps on her first two attempts. On her second attempt she was under her takeoff mark again due to her reaching, more than likely this was because she was running out of gas and was getting tired. I had her move her starting mark up a bit to keep her from reaching for the take off. On her third attempt she hit her mid mark but was still under about a foot at takeoff. This bent the pole to its limit and it broke. Now why did this happen? I believe there was a few reasons why. One, she was tired, when vaulters start to get tired they tend to reach for the takeoff. Two, she had a great tail wind pushing her down the runway. Third, everyone in the stadium was watching her and she was pumped. Fourth, was the fact it was her last attempt at the collegiate record. I think all of these combined caused her to be “under” at takeoff and therefore breaking the pole. As soon as it happened I knew something was wrong due to the way she acted. I was the first to her and saw the cut on her hand. I called for a trainer. The IU medical staff took great care of her and took her to the ER. She received stitches on the inside and outside of the hand. The ISU trainers set an appointment with the hand specialist in Indianapolis on Monday.

Saturday…..

I talked to her before graduation and she told me that the hand was very tight and sore. Kylie seemed to be in very good mood and was upbeat. After graduation I went to her parent’s house for her graduation party. Again she was very positive and upbeat about the whole thing. She did tell me that one the medication started to wear off the hand was very painful.

Monday……

Kylie texted me about 10:00 am and told me that she was on her way to Indy to see the doc. She seemed a little nervous and a little unsure what to expect. The last text I sent her was to remain positive and what ever comes out of the appointment will be the best for her and her future and to hope for the best. At 1:38pm Kylie texts me a :) !!!! She then sent: just saw doc! He said I should be able to vault in 3 wks! Going to make a protective piece or glove for the hand her in Indy. Stitches out in a week. This was the best news we could get!!!!!!!!

I know that Kylie is thankful for all of the nice thoughts and kind words that all of you have given her. I will keep you guys updated on what is going on! Thanks…

I know she's tough, mentally, but I don't see how she can go full bore into a vault without thinking about the pole breaking.

Several years ago, my wife was driving and I woke up going sideways at 60 mph. It was years before I could sleep with someone else driving.

Funny because I was thinking the same thing - in her previous championships she has spoken to her confidence going into the meet and trusting her training, that is what helps get her over bars. I don't think she will have that to fall back on going into this NCAA Championship meet.

However let's consider that she has been battling a hamstring injury all outdoor and has been able to overcome that and still compete at a level that puts her easily in the top 10 in the nation. Something tells me that she will finish on the podium, given that she can battle through the pain!

It seems to me it would have taken a lot of courage to continue after breaking the first pole. To continue after the second break and the injury is the sign of a courageous champion. Best of luck Kylie! You know we are all pulling for you!

Wow. I don't know squat about track and field events, but what heart that girl has! A tremendous role model for athletes of all ages. Best wishes for a speedy recovery!!!

Yeah that's pretty baller right their... Sounds like they got a real positive report. No nerve damage or anything like that, this thing could have been a whole lot worse.

You don't win 3 NCAA Championships without overcoming some kind of adversity a long the way. This might be the greatest adversity she has faced to this point in her young career. Nothing she can't overcome.

I say young career because she is not done after Indiana State - you could be watching the next Sycamore that wins an Olympic medal. Wouldn't that be something if she went on to win a medal with her vault coach Jeff Martin along side? That'd be pretty huge!
