I know that wins draw a crowd but i am not just interested in drawing a crowd..I don't think that ISU is in as good of a standing with terre haute as it needs to be..that trickles down to athletic support...I don't want to manipulate terre haute into supporting athletics...I want to build a better relationship with the community...Maybe we do enough or not...just want some insight on what is going on or some ideas we need to do...If people care about you and you build a relationship..they will support you..I will never forget when I was a kid and ISU football players came to my youth football game with their jerseys on and met us and talked to us...One of the guys name was Andre Peck....And then we played during their halftime and we got to hit their shoulder pads as they ran onto the field...I couldn't wait to see him play and he got a sack that game and I told all my buddies that I knew him...LOL...I don't remember what year exactly..don't remember their record or if they even won the game...I just remember that guy and how it made me feel...maybe our guys can do that...youth football practices late...maybe they can meet some of them...not trying to recruit a crowd but to show that they are interested and want to support the kids here....IDK...

Hate to say it, as it seems to complicate the issue, but it's not just up to ISU to change this. It starts at the high schools and local school systems. Even there people behave like, and support the idea, that Terre Haute isn't good enough as a community. There needs to be more confidence and appreciation for what the community has and provides, including the university. The real shame of it is that many people who think that and let their children think that live there their entire lives.

Getting back to your point, Big Blue, I think those are good suggestions, maybe a way to challenge that "not good enough" notion.

Good idea! If 3 or 4 players could arrange to get to each Terre Haute school at lunch time and pass out schedules, sign some autographs (I know Morgan, but young kids dig it) and give out passes (kid gets in free with a paying adult) there would be lasting fans made at an early age. Subtle recruiting starts at an early age.

No doubt it helps. Coach Lansing KNOWS it will make a difference for his team and if Coach Miles could be convinced, it is a proven fact that it helps. Youth football at half time at ISU games after the band plays is cool too. Anything to bring the parents and classmates out to the game. Just like a local high school band playing at halftime helps. Get the HS kids involved, and the middle school kids, and the elementary kids etc.....MARKETING. What a word~

we used to have a deal with high school kids.....

if they showed up for a game with the student id's from their respective elementary, middle schools and high schools, they got a really reduced rate on single game tickets....one problem that we had though was that parents would simply drop their kids off at the games...the kids would run roughshod around the place....lol......it was like isu was an amusement park...lol.....we finally had to change the policy to a reduced ticket price with parent or guardian in tow....lol......

I don't think you all are giving Indiana State enough credit - the Foundation is as active as it every has been in the "Marketing" of the Sycamore brand... They along with the Alumni association are hosting events week in and week out for Alumni to keep them interested.

Take for example that this week Lansing spoke at least once that I knew of to a group of about 50 at the Rod and Gun Club. Then on Friday he was at the Athletic Foundation auction and dinner out at Bob Warn Field and then on Saturday he was at the golf outing at Idel Creek and had Myles Walker with him shaking hands.

Same for Coach Moren, she had one of the freshman basketball players with her to meet people.

IMO, Indiana State is doing more than it ever has and they are not getting enough credit for the great strides that have been made.

I have said for years, that Sycamore Sam and some players/students/etc. need to be out and at youth sports throughout the Valley weekly. They need to be giving out little foam balls of the sport they are attending with ISU on them and they need to have dozens of kids tickets with them every time they go. This would not be a huge expense and it would not have to be "the" sycamore sam, but any student that is good at interacting with kids in the suit.

That would be simple, easy and inexpensive. I like the player angle to the idea and think it would be great too. I know they do some outreach, but more could done from a "community service" aspect.

Sounds like a lot of HS games that I've attended...

Sounds like LIFE in so many ways...

Not saying I like it just saying it doesn't just happen at ISU Football games

Well they can have children there with their jerseys on to get in for free but they have to have their parents there with them at admissions. They can't just let a bunch of kids in the game without parents...if the kids dont' have parents then the deal is off...the parents must go to the game also...Hey morgan i don't think we mean to discredit the efforts that have been recently put in place...just talking ideas...But if you know of things that are being done in the community, which you have already expressed, I am interested to know....that's all...but I will say that there is sort of a negative vibe about ISU in the community for whatever reason and I just want to talk about how to make the city proud to have us...Again I could be wrong...it is just what I sense..when I coached H.S football it seemed kids prided themselves by not going to ISU...not just talking athletics...I believe it is a great university with lots of opportunities...but i just want to know how we can make the majority of the city feel the same way and our efforts to make it that way...correct me if I am saying something wrong...

BB79 -- what you describe is nothing new and it's not limited to The Haute; how it got started? who knows but it's not a recent phenomenon.

Some say it's similar to how Terre Haute looks at itself...

Have you read YOUR ISU COMMUNITY IN HISTORY AND LEGEND ; they use ( or did use ) it in Freshman Orientation...

They quote a governor (or other state-wide politician) regarding Terre Haute's view point...

I just think it is interesting...I know it isn't new because I grew up here....I just wonder what happened that's all...I guess I do need to read up on some history but what are some ideas that we can do to change it...or do we just sit back and say,"well that is just the way it is in terre haute because it has always been like this" I know none of you are requesting that but I just wanted to see what some of you thought about the whole thing...We have three good universities in TH...good schools..and low crime but we (TH) only see ourselves as nothing...And a D-1 basketball program..other places would kill to have it...granted other places have a lot more...but we don't take advantage of what we have...

not a T-H native; never felt like the townines liked State students (at least not in the mid-80s) which always amazed me since T-H has 3 schools in town; the universities are a pretty good source of revenue AND (unlike) IP, Sony, Pfizer, etc -- State (and RHIT and St Mary/Woods) aren't going to move for 'a better business climate...)

Agree that T-H has NOT taken advantage of their assets -- but I do hear more positives today than 10-15 years ago.

How much will the I-69 construction affect T-H?

I think that will have a huge effect on TH...thousands less going through the area. But still, TH is still a large retail area for many, many people in the area.

Maybe we can get in contact with the army recruiting center and organize something where we do something nice for the fallen troops at halftime during homecoming. I know there is a couple of soldiers around here that have passed away. Not to draw a crowd but because it is just the right thing to do...Maybe we have done it...I don't know...Do some stuff with law enforcement or firefighters...get some sponsors back we may have lost...the mayor will help...etc...

Agree there too. Getting the Marine Corp League, Guard, etc. would be a great way to bulster support for both.
