Jeez, illinois state sure does have some high character athletes sprinkled amongst their athletic department. A shame, that a few of them ruin it for everyone. Doesnt dashoin knight have two brushes with the law? Including domestic violence?

I beleive that illinois statr could be a very good mid-major athletic department across the board but they seem to be selling their soul to the devil to get there. One thing that ive learned in my novice coaching career....dont depend on low character, it will ALWAYS bite you in the ass.

Read between the lines here. Spack only suspended him and has made it clear no final decision has been made on his status. He was arrested for allegedly sell marijuana to an under cover agent. I believe this is his first offense and the quantity was somewhat low 10-30 grams. There is a reasonable chance if he gets a good lawyer that the charge could be pleaded down to a much lesser charge. My interpretation was if this happens he may not remain suspended. I wonder however if he was a backup player would he be afforded the same position from Spack. ISU Red lost there starting DB (I believe he was a LB last year) that transferred from Oregon last month - he was removed for team violations. He transferred in last year and was a key member of the defense. This winter they brought in a transfer from Iowa (LB) he was a starter at IA but had a run in with the law and was removed from the team. Spack has a history of bringing in low character kids to give them a second chance - not always, but many times transfers bring baggage along when they come from larger programs.

NDSU seldom brings in transfers. They recruit freshmen, red-shirt most of them, train and strengthen them, teach them the system from the ground up and win championships. Coach Sanford has said before that the best programs are built from freshmen. Realistically though many teams have gaps to fill and transfers fill those gaps.

Apparently "Indefinite Suspension" at IL State means 11 days. Coprich was reinstated today, effective immediately. This does match Spack's track record with others that have had run ins with the law.

first offender probation is a good opportunity for him.

I wont get too bent out of shape over 9 grams of weed

I agree, I don't think he should have been removed from the team permanently. I do think some sort of punishment (2 games) was in order. Not sure I like the message no punishment sends.

BTW two of our athletes received a BS alcohol ticket last season and i think they got 1 or 2 games for that.

I don't think the issue should be "9 grams of weed." The issue should be, at every school, is it against the law. If it is, then you pay a price. Breaking the law used to be a bad thing. But now, we've lost that moral compass. "Oh, it's just weed.." shouldn't have any bearing on it. If you break the law, you're out at least X number of games.

But we coddle young people and then wonder why they have so much trouble in the "real" world...

You don't have a problem with him being a drug dealer? What if he were selling it to your kids? Still no problem... even if it is only 9 grams?

I truly dont. They should have got multiple buys or a bigger quantity if you wanted.

I would compare this to a 19yo using his fake id to buy alcohol for his 19yo friend.

And as far as breaking the law used to be a bad thing. I would just say that we arrest people for all kinds of things now that we used to just take them to their parents or coach and they would take care of it.

edit: And if my daughters bought weed from him, I would blame them for buying weed. And I would handle it in-house.

Difference in the programs and the level of the athlete. He should face a couple game suspension, but not be booted. He did break the law, and I'm sure also some team rules. To not have any consequences at all sends a bad message, not only to Coprich, but to the rest of the student athletes and the university. I'm all for second chances, but there should be consequences and a short leash.

But it wouldnt surprise me if he was still suspended for a game or two. I felt like the original story meant he was off the team. maybe i misunderstood what they meant.

Original article said he was charged with a Class 4 felony for possession of 10-30 grams. Did that change? If so, it should only be a felony if he's a repeat offender.

http://norml.org/laws/item/illinois-penalties

Maybe there was some other factor the upgraded it to a felony.

Edit: I didn't see before that he was attempting to sell it to an undercover officer. Now I get the felony.

Skip to 0:56 for Brock Spack's method of "helping young men grow up..."

No consequences sends a bad message to Coprich, his teammates, students at ILSU, and young people in general, particularly ones who might idolize a "famous" college football player.

But hey, it was just weed, right?

I'm thankful we've got a coach who will mete out harsh discipline even to his star player. Some things are more important than winning at all costs...
