The Captain Level
No, not on the court...on television! On Saturday, our Sycamores play what may be the most important game for the future of the program in over a decade. It's on Fox Sports Midwest and Chicago at 7:30...

At 9:00, the Loosiers play #1 Michigan on ESPN.

I'd like to see all of us, and our friends/family, support local restaurants/bars Saturday night. Be sure they tune the game to ISU at 7:30, and keep it on until the end of the game. Don't let them switch over to the IU game until after the ISU game is over. Establishments like Buffalo Wild Wings, Friday's, etc. who also play audio of the game need to keep the audio on for ISU until it's over.

Let's support our local businesses, let them know we appreciate them showing ISU, wear our blue, and drown out those Loosier fans who will file in for that game.

The last thing that needs to happen in Terre Haute Saturday night is the IU game taking precedence over the ISU game. We need to show our community and school pride.

Visit the Ballyhoo who will definitely feature the ISU game, or Copper Bar (who might not), Buffalo Wild Wings, Friday's, Garfield's, Cheeseburger in Paradise, Chili's, etc. Plan to watch the game out, wear your blue, show your pride, and don't let the IU game overshadow ours.

ISU students...get something going in the commons, or one of the rooms at the Union, have a big viewing party, hype it up!

And the team...Win it!

Well personally I will NEVER visit any BW3 in this country as they support greater gun control and do not support protecting my second amendment rights.

What are they thinking? Will NEVER go in that place again.

Let me be clear - I will take my business some place else.

That said - great post and great idea!! Good way to get in a shouting match with some dumb a** IU fans also - they don't feel entilted or anything.

Great Idea!!! Numbers are key though. Invite out friends who may not necessarily be die-hard Sycamore fans to get them interested in the home game on Wednesday. If anything else it couldn't hurt to provide yourself with more backing when the Loosiers fans get ornery because there game isn't taking precedent for once.

Don't understand the need for separation between the two. Tryibg to get TH to choose one over the other wont happen big Hoosier roots in this town. People that are fans of both. Alienating those particular fans, which of there are plenty, weakens the overall cause.

So you think it is okay for a place to show the ISU game and then switch over to an IU game before the Sycamore game has finished?

You're missing his point. It's about making sure Indiana STATE is the focal point of the evening.

I've told students/fans/everyone all year. I am not asking people to stop cheering for the teams they've cheered for their whole lives. I'm asking for you to make your alma mater top priority. This weekend is a perfect example. Your school (the one you attend - ISU) should be more important to you than any other school.

Yeah your not going to get very far on this site with that motto.

I know plenty of Loosier fans who are from Terre Haute that are also ISU fans. I've couple thoughts about that - first of all you don't have people in Gloomington that call themselves IU and ISU fans - why should we be any different than them? Secondly, how can you claim to be a fan of both teams, both D1, just an hour apart from eachother. It's no different than me coming on here and saying I am a Butler fan (I AM NOT) - that just can't happen. Either your an ISU fan or your an IU fan.

This goes without mentioning the fact (mentioning it now) that IU refuses to play us. Look, we've got enough people in this town the claim to be all in on IU.

The last thing we need is you or anyone else coming on here and telling us how to act as Sycamore fans. You or anyone else wants to cheer for IU, be my guest but don't bring it on this forum.

That doesn't define Sycamore Pride in my mind.

And if you think that's to harsh -
Why don't you go on Northern Iowa's fan forum or Iowa State and tell them they should be Iowa basketball fans.

You will get laughed out of the place - that response is being laughed out of here now.

By me...

End of conversation...

Continue thread - go watch ISU and then have them turn on something else after it's over!!

Think I've got to pop in on this one -- yes the bars etc should show the ISU game and stick with it until its over (short of us being blown out by 25 pts).
But secondly, it is very possible to be fans of two different teams -- Ok alot of folks have one team and one team only and that's great. But many cheer for more than one. Heck I have family who are big Notre Dame fans and have pulled me in too, a daughter who went to Alabama, I grew up in southern Indiana cheering for IU, live now in West Lafayette a mile from Purdue and I want them ALL to do well ...................unless they are playing ISU !
Its a FACT -- like it or not -- many in Terre Haute cheer for IU -- the trick is not to make them choose between IU and ISU, but to build and mold them toward the ISU side -- but not trying to force them to abandon their IU feelings. That wil only turn them off to ISU.
Be positive, give IU its due (they have a great team at this point) and encourage encourage encourage.

I acknowledged in my post and continue to acknowledge that IU and ISU fans exsist and can co-exsist.

Problem is, don't come in my living room and tell me I can't put my feet on my own table. This is a Sycamore fan forum and for anyone to come onto this forum and tell me it's ok to be fans of both is disrespectful in my mind and if it makes me Marshall Henderson in saying "get out" then so be it. This is my living room and I will put my feet on the table if I want.

I'm a Sycamore fan. I cheer only for the Sycamors and I bleed only blue.

For the second time, nuff said.

Maybe there are many in TH who cheer for the gloomington reform institute; so be it.

When there are many in gloomington who cheer for STATE, I'll be more interested in your arguments.

Side note: Have to wonder why Syc State of Mind feels his rights trump the rights of BW3 wrt concealed weapons? BW3 is simply saying keep your weapon off THEIR property. They're not saying you can't own one.

I think you also have to realize what types of fans are out there. I classify them like this:

1) Follower - Usually reserve this for second, third, or Nth teams that they keep tabs on. For example, I grew up in Las Vegas so I'll occassionally see how they're doing. That said, I couldn't name one kid on their roster right now as I type this. I'm also like this for instate programs although I can name players since I follow local recruiting and am inundated with media coverage about them. Sadly, I think this area is where most Indiana State alumni fall.

2) Casual Fan - This is the average Sycamore fan in my opinion and where most students fall. They'll go to games or watch them on TV if they've got nothing else to do. If you ask them to name as many Sycamores as they can they'll probably be able to name Odum, RJ and a couple others and then peter out.

3) Fairweather Fan - When the going gets tough... they're getting the hell outta here. What things are going good, however, they'll be acting like they're a diehard. They'll only go to games when we're winning and if we're having a bad season, their ISU gear goes into the bottom drawer and out comes their Butler/IU/Purdue/ND attire.

4) Diehard Fan - I'd like to think that 90% of us here fall into this category. No matter how the team is doing, a diehard will always suppot them. We follow the program religiously, won't miss any games, news, etc. Most diehards can name every player on the roster, what position they play, uniform number and program spout off a couple things about said player.

Westbadenboy, Exactly, you can be fans of both. That is what I was trying to convey. There are plenty of folks that root for both teams in TH. Trying to tell them to pick one and abandon the other won't work to ISU's attendance benefit. And no, ISU and IU aren't rivals really, i just don't see it. They don't get in head to head recruiting battles, look at the profiles of their programs from a tradition sense. I'm a fan of both. Nobody can will change that. You can hate the Hoosiers all you want but don't act like it's a treasonous axt to be fans of both far from it.

You didn't answer my question.

Said it before and I'll say it again and again: what pisses me off is not people who are fans of both teams. It's the students who are currently at ISU who fill their social medias with statuses and tweets about every frickin' IU game and wear IU gear all over campus yet never even say a word about their own school or attend a game.

I personally have never understood why people associate themselves as "fans" of college sports teams at schools that they have no affiliation with. It's 10X worse IMO if you're an IU blowhard who is a student at ISU and somehow thinks you're too good to root for the team in your own backyard.

And let me tell you something - that's just going to be the way it is. When you have IU and ISU fans (a dual fan) come in your house and tell you how to act then your going to have students act that way. So you either change the culture and not sit around and act like it's ok or you put up with it! I'm not standing for it.

You want to be an IU fan - fine by me. Don't rub it in my face and don't tell me I have to accept it. I won't and I will never.

As for any resturant that tells people they can't bring a gun in the resturant even with a permit to carry - they are supporting gun control and they are taking my right as an American citizen away and I won't support that shit either.

Now that I have moved back home to Ellettsville (about ten minutes outside of Bloomington) I am amazed at people that don't understand why I still root for Indiana State. I will admit that I cheer for IU like I did before I became a Sycamore and now I feel like I can cheer for both of them. My fraternity brothers and friends from ISU cannot understand how I cheer for the Hoosiers and my friends from home cannot understand why I cheer for the Sycamores.

I guess that puts me in purgatory?

Overall, I really look forward to watching both games on Saturday. Should be a great day of basketball for both.

But before I finish my post, here is my disclaimer:

If Indiana State and IU would happen to ever play each other at any time, you will see me raise that flag of royal blue!

Hey I personally enjoy watching IU (this year more than in years past) because I think they are really good!

Don't misunderstand me - if you want to be fans of both fine with me, I understand being an hour from Gloomington your going to have that and always will.

But this site isn't called Crimson and Blue or Hoosiermore or FansofCollegeHoops or FansofIndianaBasketball then I would be off base. Understand something - this is my life. I love Indiana State athletics. I grew up in Terre Haute, I attended Indiana State - I was an athlete at Indiana State. Honestly for me it's a way of life and I accept that and everything that comes with it. Most don't take it as serious as I do and that's ok.
