The only thing they're good at is shutting down roads and then doing nothing for months. No other state I travel to shuts down as many highways as Indiana. They've even got 465 shut down for the billionth time 🙄. Some of these screenshots I took from Google Maps even have multiple highways shut down in one imagine. It's crazy!

do you struggle with perspective? 10 different highways 'closed' for construction, repair?

seems pretty typical for the summer, when ~85%+ of road repair is conducted

To which states are you referring to don’t do the same thing?

There's way more than 10. That was just the limit for a single post on Sycamore Pride. In fact there's 15 closures in the 10 screenshots I took.

I'm referring to the other 47 states in the Contiguous USA, and I've been to all of them within the past several years. Sure, every state has some road closures, but nothing like Indiana.

1st time thinking of INDOT this summer, but vaguely remember several years ago that IN gov't prioritized infrastructure improvements, & increased the gas tax to pay for it. If more road construction is occuring, then this might be a reason why.

NDOT laughs at this.

They are in Year 10 of the I215 beltway project while having taken on the I15 Tropicana project while taking on Project Neon while taking on 10 other major roadway projects.

Indiana is the 38th US state in size (## of acres/square miles); it's the smallest state WEST of the Appalachians in the Contiguous USA and you think Indiana LEADS the nation in road closures?

Are you remembering the Mitch Daniels " 'Major Moves' project"? Wasn't that when he stopped ALL projects initiated under O'Bannon/Kernan? And then restarted most of the same ones but pinned his Major Moves tag on them? Hoping the average Hoosier wouldn't remember?

Remember, 98% of all road projects in the USA are awarded to the LOWEST bidder, not the 'best product'

MOST of these are likely repair, maintenance, NOT upgrades, improvements

No, I'm not. Current Governor during his first term. No clue what % is repair vs. new construction.

This concludes my contribution to the INDOT discussion.

You must travel every week… northern states have shorter time frames to complete operations that involve paving so they jam them into a shorter window than states that don’t get as cold.

I'd actually be curious as to how Indiana's highway mileage compares to other states. Indiana might be the 38th largest state, but it's also the 17th most populous state, so I highly doubt our highway mileage ranks 38th.

Correct. I'm an OTR truck driver, and even when I'm off I am often times out traveling. Since May I have flown out to Las Vegas (went to AZ and So Cal) and Denver for vacations. I'm pretty sure New Mexico, Wyoming, Montana, Idaho, Washington, Oregon, and Rhode Island are the only states in the Lower 48 I haven't been to this year.

I definitely notice the road closures in Indiana more so than other states, but perhaps it's because I live here. For example it seems like most other states will reduce a bridge down to 1 lane with a stop light, while Indiana just closes the entire road down in most cases.

I do know they do studies about length of lane closures vs entire road closures. I worked many years at a large bridge and highway contractor for 10 years. Sometimes it shaved the impacted by 6-18 months to close it rather than simply take lanes.

You believe a state's highway mileage is correlated to its population?

Yes, population has a lot do with it. The higher the population, the more towns you likely have. The more towns you have, the more highways you likely have connecting them.

Compare Indiana to Nevada for example. INDOT maintains 11,200 miles, while NDOT maintains only 5,400 miles. Nevada is the 7th largest state in the Union at 109,831 mi², while Indiana is the 38th largest at 35,817 mi². Nevada is three times larger than Indiana, yet Indiana has a little over twice as many highway miles in it's network.

who's maintaining the OTHER 21,000 miles of road in Nevada?
