Personally I am very concerned about our size. Next year I think we will have 6 or 7 guards. We will only have 1 center next year. Our you guys concerned with the height of the squad for the years to come?

It seems to be the way the game is trending. Plus, we always struggle to get quality bigs. I would rather have six quality tweeners than two or three posts that are stiffs just to fill out a roster.

Rickman 6'9" nice experience
Hunerman 6'11" little experience... hopefully hitting weights hard...
Thomas 6'8" nice experience
Kessinger 6'8" nice experience
Brinkmeyer 6'9" frosh but can jump
Hughes 6'5"
Williams 6'5"
Host of guards 6'2"-6'4"

On paper it does not look that bad. But yea 3 are 6'8" or taller with experience is all...

Four out and one in is running college hoops right now.

The Villanova-style 4-out-1-in offense is pretty much the norm now, and that includes the NBA. It's all about ball movement, dribble penetration, high screens, etc. The traditional Bob Knight motion offense is dead and has been for a long time.

For us, I'm not so much concerned about our size, but Rickman is going to be very, very important this year. This more fast-paced perimeter offense to work it does require rim protection and a quick big man that can handle the pick and roll. That's where Rickman will be key. Rebounding also won't be an issue either since big men are only really important for offensive rebounds and put-backs. Since the game revolves around jump shots now most guards and wings are just as responsible for rebounds now since most are coming long off the rim.

I'm rambling, but I guess my point is I don't think our size is an issue. Krutwig will eat us alive, but the other Valley teams are going to look a lot like us.

I’m less concerned about size and more concerned about the overall talent of this roster. On paper I don’t think we’re going to be much - but as with the Pacers this past season what’s on paper doesn’t always mean too much. If they can play together and defend anything is possible but I just don’t see it. I’d say if we avoid Thursday we will have done something.

Look at the names posted above in this thread and the only one that gave us anything last year was Hughes and he was inconsistent at that (he had an excuse being a Freshman). Those other guys - especially Rickman and Kessinger I can’t help them.

I agree, but Hunerman will not play very much this year.

Agreed. Treding now is a lineup that looks like:

G
G
F
F
F/C

as opposed to the traditional nomenclature:

PG
SG
SF
PF
C

High School Programs and AAU aren't producing many quality Big Man Prospects, so you it has required most schools to embrace a 4/1 ratio.

The center position is just about dead. Very few bigs have developed any true back to the basket moves and if they do have one, it's not automatic like the previous top centers had. Guys used to have 2-3 moves in the post they could use with high percentage of success. Now they are basically a screener for getting shooters open save for the better bigs that can score some. Even then, they only get a handful of touches most of the time.

I'd venture that even your G,G,F,F,F/C is probably only a third (maybe) of the 351 teams. I believe it's pretty much G,G,G,F,F or G,G,G/F,F,F anymore. That is how Nova has operated with their personnel with Bridges being a G/F type. The trend is all of the elite bigs seem to team up at the Kentucky and Duke.

I'd argue there aren't event really G/F/C positions any longer. There are now three positions players play - point guard, wing, and post. There are no backcourt or frontcourt designations.

I agree which is why I added F/C as the final. The Center position exists for those lucky enough to have one on their roster. Most schools are playing the 5 (if that even really exists) with an undersized (height, weight, or both) forward.

I think we will be fine and it’s because I think Thomas is better than what we seen last year. He played hurt a lot from what I understand. He had some decent games for us and I think can bring more to the table.

Yeah, that's fair as well. Hell, with the mid range game basically disappearing, you could probably just classify it into two.

Anyone remember when line-ups, especially at the high school level, wee introduced as left guard, right guard, left forward, right forward and center? Seems lilke I remember that from the early to mid 50's.

All I can remember from HS in the early 60's was G, F, and C. I didn't play in HS. Would they have been using the 1-5 designations in practices?

Size doesn't matter, right? I don't think ISU had anyone over 6'9" in 1979, did they? Didn't seem to hurt too much then. Like was stated above, I'd be more worried about talent. I would disagree with what was stated above in that I think ISU has a pretty good amount of talent.
