The luck of the Irish went to ISU, not to the Irish! With today's victory (the third straight one-run game), ISU is 3-0 in the Irish Classic. It is the first victory against Notre Dame since 1995.
It was a solid, but not a great outing for Ryan Torgerson, but when the chips were down he seemed to get out of trouble. Through six innings, Torgerson gave up three runs on eight hits and three strikeouts with no walks.
Kudrecki came on in the seventh for a perfect inning including one strikeout. In the eighth, Kudrecki got into a pinch and Machado came in to give the last out...holding Notre Dame to three runs. The 2010 phenominal closer who sat out 2011 with arm surgery, Tyler Browning, came in for the 9th, giving up a lead-off single, followed by a wild pitch to put the runner at second. Browning struck out the second and third batters...both swinging! The next batter got a single to center to tie the game at 4-4! The next batter hit a long fly to center that Burnam caught over the left field wall to send it to extra innings! Hochstedler (fourth appearance with a zero ERA) came in to pitch the bottom of the 10th...giving up a lead-off single. Second batter flied out to deep left. Next batter strikes out. Final batter pops out to the infield giving ISU the 6-4 win and Hochstedler his second save. Browning gets the win, his first of the season with one previous save.
A sixth inning rally with singles by Hedges and Walterhouse, followed by a double by Wampler and a sac bunt by Curry accounted for the first two ISU runs.
A seventh inning rally with a homer by Lucas, a double by Burnam, a single by Hedges and a sac fly by Walterhouse produced two runs to put The Sycamores ahead 4-3.
In the 10th, Wampler singled and stole second. Hileman walked. Kraemer tripled with two outs to drive in two runs, putting ISU in the lead 6-4! ALL of the action came with two outs!
Because Notre Dame and Indiana State won their first two games, they will face off in the championship game Sunday at 12:00 Noon (ET).
