The Wade Level
I was at the ISU Women's game on Sunday... sitting next to my brother-in-law before the game started. The ISU Women have a new pre-game video like the men's team - but more appropriate for girls.. The video was very well done, and you could tell the girls were having a good time making it. (Haven't seen it posted to facebook yet..)

My brother-in-law turned to me and said: "This place is starting to get a little personality".

Now, this is from a guy that doesn't "heap praises" upon things... and he was referring to a couple-year trend.. that has now culminated with a couple very good videos showing personality of the players.

From the videos to the very good Sycamore Sam this year... to the Bally Pizza Challenge... it's been a good start to the year.

ISU Staff is starting to make better use of the video boards too... I saw the Colts score posted during the girls game. Now if we can just get updated MVC scores and standings a couple times per half, that would be great!!

We also need to get the live camera into the stands during the Rex Coffee "Hide the Bean" promo..

Everything in the last 3-4 years that I can think of:
Senior Banners in the entrance
Outdoor music before/after events (sometimes too loud)
Blue Lights in front of Hulman Center
Lights shining words and pictures on outside of Hulman Center.
Blue Lights behind the words of Hulman Center
Lights in the concourse as you enter Hulman Center (Welcome to Hulman Center).
New Video Boards
Naming of our floor
Blue and Gray seats
Wireless Access
Re-model of the Varsity Club.
Removing the "Crimson and Cream" carpet and replacing with Blue.
Bottled Beer in the Varsity Club.
New cabinets to sell Sycamore Merchandise from.

You have to start "traditions" somewhere, or else they aren't traditions. The same can be said of atmosphere.

That's very good to hear. I haven't been to the Hulman Center in a while and it's about time the university put its stamp on the place a little bit more.

Well the fact that nobody sits in them is all the more reason to replace them . If someone was sitting in them then Nobody would really give a shit they were yellow

One of the issues that I have with the videos and the use of cameras is that the academic side of the house doesnt' work well with the student affairs/athletics side of the house. The Radio/TV/Film department at ISU could easily provide "credit' for students to operate the cameras and go up into the stands, they could provide "credit" for the making of those videos, they could provide 'credit" for students to do alot of things that they don't do. ISU has the resources, but they don't use them because the academic side of the house doesn't play "nice"
ISU promotes "experiencial Learning" yet an example right here in front of us, where that concept would be tremendous and it isn't used as well as it could be. Sad!

Actually, Sackalot, you are incorrect.

Those videos are shot, edited and produced with a student worker from the Radio/TV/Film Department who is not only getting paid by the athletic department but is doing a year long internship for academic credit. The athletic department uses the services of upwards of 20 students per year who work for academic credit, and usually get paid for their services as well. As someone who had to work for little or no compensation in order to get experience in collegiate athletics, I think the athletic department takes great care of our student workers and gives them real world experience that is very attractive to potential employers.

We use students in media relations, video services, marketing, promotions, compliance, business, administrative and in managerial roles with specific teams. Not to mention the Athletic Training Services department which employs and gives real world experience to its students.

That is great to hear!!!! That has to be a new development over the past year or two. It wasn't happening when I was in the TV/Radio/Film department as an undergrad. One of the reasons I changed my major was the fact that a student couldn't get any experience in athletics. That is truly a great thing for ISU students and the athletic dept. I am truly happy to hear that and thank you for correcting me. Great!!! And I stand corrected, and that is a very good thing!!!

Oh I know there's no way in hell it's happening any time soon but we can all dream can't we?

The real question is why were the seats any color than the school colors? Granted white seats would show a lot of dirt, grime, etc but I'm sure the yellow does as well.

I was going to post the same thing about the student experiential learning... I know for a fact that students are used in MANY of the video editing and photo/grapic creations around campus. ISU was already pretty progressive in this area, and it is getting even better all the time. There are over 100 students that work for the OIT department alone, and many of them are doing outstanding work.

I'm sure everyone knows the real reason for the colors on the seats right???
You just have to look at one of the major sponsor colors.... look in the upper bowl.... just a little higher than the seats... in the corner.... there you go...those seats matched the signs perfectly right?

Yellow seats or not, we need to find ways to fill them! Yes, winning helps, but I think perhaps they need to tap the Marketing department in the 'Scott College of Business' to drum up some ways to put butts in the seats--CONSISTENTLY.

Does anyone know if the folks at SERVPRO are going to go all out again this year?

Let's don't forget the original impetus of HC in '73 was a joint (fairly relevant term of the era!) Civic-University "multi-purpose" use facility. It also had a "tartan" surface (rubber on top of concrete)...one of the worst-ever developed for basketball! We can go on & on...maybe someone should interview CLIFF LAMBERT to rehash the story:)

My primary point is that ISU basketball was NOT the sole planning focus for the HC design. I think that the planner(s) actually selected "bright orange" as a color simply because of its association with the psychological concept of "excitement."

RP has to get a "high five" for his influence in reshaping the TH political culture on the HC management
issues...look at the changes since he arrived!
