Well obviously we can shoot the 3's...But will we rely on that to much? Could hurt us in the long run..
Reed looks like he's improved a lot..
Jake Kelly played good but it took him a while to get going.. I honestly think he tried to do too much..
Jake Odum, I thought, played well..
Eitel twins looked pretty decent too. I mean yes they played Rose-Hulman...Once they become stronger they will be pretty good players for the Sycamores..
Printy did what I expected him to do..
Lathan looks real athletic. Boy can he jump. Kind of looks like he has a little bit to much swagger though. Nothing wrong with having a little swag but he might have just a lil extra
Richard will be pretty solid..
Leitnaker did better than I thought (probably since it was aginst Rose)..
Dolunony suprised me a lot. Looks like he might be able to shoot.
I can see Mahurin being red-shirted. Didn't play that good.
Crawford and Martin...I'm sorry but I just don't like how they play...They will have an occasional good game here and there but I don't see them being anything special. Hope they can prove me wrong but I don't see it happening...
One final note, Why is it so hard to follow your shot? It seems like everytime we shot it they would just stand or start jogging back to the other end. Is it too much work to just follow your shot?
I know this was the first game of the year but this is my inital reaction to how they looked.
This is just how I feel...Everyone else's thoughts?

Oh and the block by number 11 on Jake Kelly was sick! hah

I pretty much agree with that statement .I think we are going to be a very good ballclub . I think Kelly Playing a guard position in the Valley will pay big dividends. He looks so smooth out there once he gets in his groove watch out . Jake Odum is going to make it hard for the coaches to redshirt him . RJ and the Eitels looked like they would benefit from the extra year. I am really stoked about this team we just need to shore up the middle a little .

Also nice to see the CC team out on the floor being recognized for their MVC Championship just wait because i want to see the baseketball team being recognized and presenting the mvc championship trophey during baseball season.

I second that for sure! It was a nice deal for them to get recognized like that!

Let's see here - what did I think of the game? First of all I am not sure how much you can take from this game, Rose Hulman was out of it's league big time. So take it for what it's worth, we won big like we were supposed to do.

Jake Kelly - Did indeed try to do a little much, he really seemed to be pressing the entire game. He had a quiet 13pts (many free throws), some of those carry calls on him were awful calls in my mind. If he gets called for that all season, then he might be in trouble.

Jake Odum - Was one of the better players on the floor tonight in my mind. Did an excellent job running the point and made some very good passes. He played within himself and that was very nice to see and he made a couple 3s, not sure that he will have that much open space and time in the Valley.

Printy - Shot the ball well and handled the ball well, he looked pretty darn good tonight! He is going to get some open shots this season for sure!

Richard - Played about as good as I have seen him play on the Off. side of the ball. He made a couple nice looking shots and overall did a nice job.

Lathan - As we have learned is an excellent athlete - he missed a few easy ones inside. He's going to be a solid player for us - as for having to much swagger, no such thing in Division 1 athletics. lol If you have the game to back it up then it's fine by me. But it's to soon to tell if he's got the game to back it up.

Reed - Hopefully he is healthy because he looked pretty good. Shot the ball well and overall did a nice job with everything.

RJ and Eitels - Will all 3 red shirt. RJ has some work to do, he had a nice looking 3 ball. Logan and Lucas did some nice things - but their size could be a problem for them.

Martin - Blaa, not impressed.

Crawford - I like Josh and I think he did some nice things tonight. I think he is the best option on both ends of the floor at the Center position. He must have had 5 or 6 blocks tonight.

Brant - Did a decent job...

Koang - Shot the ball very well (3 for 4) from long range. He missed a dunk on a brilliant pass from Jake Odum - other than that he looked very good. This kid will be a factor for Indiana State for the next several years!

That's all - good night!

Accurate analysis. I'm glad to see you weren't ga ga over Lathan's vertical like some are. He probably has a ways to go to be a good Valley player. Hard to tell by what I've seen so far.
I'll reiterate what you said about CR. He's been working on some things OR just playing with more confidence. I think he has expanded his game and had a great line tonight with zero TO's.

Our inside guys - very weak for Valley play.

Odum was impressive but I still think he should redshirt just because of the depth we have - not because he is not good enough to play now.

I agree with most of what you guys are saying. Lathan has the ability, IMO, to be a very good MVC player, if he can get under control a little more. He's such a good athlete that he is going to cause problems for almost everybody, even in the MVC.

I actually thought the inside guys played ok. If you combine Crawford, Leitnacker, Richard, Duloney, Isiah, and Mahurin(our C's and F's) they went for 33pts, 11rbs, and 6blks. I dont know why, but I am in the minority on Crawford. I think he is our best interior player and should be the starter.

Crawford has some value because of his length. Coach says Leitnaker is a good defensiver player. How many pts and reb did our 3 C's get? I think Leitnaker had 0 reb. And we had 4 second chance points. needs to be better than that.

My "Player of the Game" considering offense & defense was hands down Jake Odum...........no contest!

I
Jake Kelly - ... some of those carry calls on him were awful calls in my mind. If he gets called for that all season, then he might be in trouble.

A primary "Point of Emphasis" this year (2009-10) for basketball officials is TRAVELING, primarily because of the popularity of the "Memphis Offense" and the perimeter style of play that goes along with it. Areas of focus will be:

1) spin move;
2) step through move;
3) jump stop;
4) extra "hop" prior to shot release;
5) ballhandlers lifting the foot prior to releasing the ball for dribble.

The 1st thing that officials will be looking for is the PIVOT FOOT. If you're gonna be trying those NBA moves in NCAA play, be prepared for a few bullet holes from officiating!

He got called for palming the ball, not traveling. It was the same moves he got away with in the Big-Ten and should have gotten away with at least one last night that wasn't palming.

Usually the "palming" occurs during a "spin" move...

You either adjust your game, or suffer the consequences. "Last year" was last year...

Not one of them was on a spin move. Both of them were on crossovers, one of which was legal. Most occur on the crossover dribble, not the spin move. I do agree that an adjustment needs to be made.

I am on that ship... I think he is our best Center at this point in time for sure.

And also agree with you about Kelly getting called for carry - he did that all year in the Big Ten last year and got away with it. He dribbles the ball to quick for the ref to even see him "palm" the ball - he was not turning the ball over in his hand on that cross over...

I agree with that - he looked pretty darn good last night. But you have to keep in mind that we were playing Rose Hulman and he is going to be able to eat up players like that. And where are his mins. going to come? People think I am nuts when I give AC a hard time, but I just don't know where he is going to find mins. either? Jake Odum would have started for the Sycamores for the last 4 years or so, but this team is loaded with more experienced guards.

I think Odum plays a lot if Harry doesn't come back. If Harry comes back, redshirt Odum. Give him a year in the system and weightroom and look out. As far as AC, Lucas Eitel played 18 minutes last night. My guess is that is where his minutes will come from. I still see Mahurin and both Eitels redshirting and possibly Odum if Harry comes back.

Eitel's 18 min last night don't mean anything. He was spreading the minutes intentionally. If Kelly and Harry play 25-30 and you add Printy, Reed, Lathan, Carter, and you could swing Doluony or Richard to the 3, PT is going to get competitive.
Whether he redshirts or not, the exciting part as fans is that Odum is a great addition to our team and was a sleeper that we got away from the big guys. How many years has IU NOT had a good PG.

Thank goodness for those two.. I HATE the two steps and a hop.

My point is that Lu. Eitel was one of the first guys off the bench and into the game. Mahurin and Lo. Eitel looked like two guys who are going to redshirt and their minutes prove that out. Mahurin played 8 minutes and Logan played 7 minutes, the two fewest amounts on the team and they were the last two to get in the game. At the game last night, I just pictured AC getting up and going in the first half, instead of Lu. Eitel. Thats nothing against Lucas. I think hes going to be a decent player, but like a lot of Freshman, he needs time.

This team is going to play 10 guys routinely if you ask me. If Harry is there, I redshirt all 4 Freshman which leaves 11 players. IMO, that leaves 1 odd man out. Could be AC, but to me it should be Leitnacker. He is just not impressive to me, but one thing he has going for him is we are thin at his position. I also think Reed is a no doubter to play big minutes like Harry and Kelly. He is a damn good ball player and maybe our best shooter. Someone else nobody seems to talk about is Printy. He does a lot of little things on the court that doesn''t show up and that goes with him being a very good shooter. He is a must play guy to me.

I have Kelly, Marshall, Reed, Printy, Richard, and Lathan as my core group. Then Duloney will play and pick one from Martin, Crawford, and Leitnaker. AC will probably back up Lathan or Richard. Odum slides into Harry's spot if Harry doesn't come back.
