I've seen where Terre Haute is now on Live PD. Saw some videos and I am glad all the crazies now get to represent my city well .

It's really not been that been THAT bad... I watch the show pretty religiously and Terre Haute has only really been on a handful of times. The scene on Saturday night was kind of a bad look for both the people that got arrested and THPD could have handled the situation a little better than they did.

But to be clear - "all the crazies" are really everywhere. I don't see them being on a show as a representation of us. But that's just me.

People were going crazy on social media about the incident on Saturday night. To my eyes I thought it was handled in a reasonable manner. I thought the police officer had a right to feel threatened and needed to retrain the individual that was interrupting his traffic stop. When people are coming out from their houses and crowding the scene, safety becomes compromised. Did you see it that way?

There are crazies in every town. I just hope that being on tv doesn't escalate a situation. I also hope we're making some money off this.

Ya pretty much...

I mean - watching a TV show we've got no real idea how many prior contacts these offers might have had with some of these people. Maybe things have gotten out of control in the past - maybe they haven't? We will never know.

The mom or whatever was out of line and when she pushed the cop to get off her son that was about the end of that for her.

That said - I've watched the show a lot and given the level of threat that I was watching it wasn't the best police work. You got the kid that gets thrown on the ground for being mouthy. You got one guy standing over watching closely - clearly unhappy but not being violent. Then you got mom who was out of line and crossed the line when she pushed the cops to get off her son... Sooo I guess I can see both sides. It went from zero arrests to 5 arrests in 5 minutes - it didn't have to end that way.

This episode, while great for Live PD, was a bad look for Terre Haute. You had it start with a drive-by shooting into someone's home with kids. You had the family jail reunion and then you had a AK-47 "robbery" reported. Crazy amount of shit for a relatively small town in one evening.

You’re out of your lane. The officer did a great job. He’s on a traffic stop, alone, with at least 2 highly agitated family members coming out of the house. One of whom will not stop yelling and walks behind him, which is something an officer is trained to not let happen if possible. Then, after telling the subject to calm down, he yells again. An arrest is totally acceptable and necessary at that time. Then the male doesn’t go into cuffs and attempts to pull away, it’s appropriate to put him on the ground. The mother is an automatic arrest. Then the officer did excellent by controlling the first guy and waiting for backup to arrive before finishing that arrest and directing responding officers to the woman who was the main issue. As far as the other 2 males, the one who got shoved is committing what’s called obstruction of justice. You cannot step in between an officer and someone they’re arresting to try and keep the officer from making said arrest. I will say, you could not see what the final male did to get arrested.

There are 3 main charges that were committed: Disorderly Conduct, Obstruction of Justice and Resisting Law Enforcement.

Officer did a wonderful job considering everything he was facing. It was FAR from police brutality!! It started out as a simple traffic stop then the psycho family decided to get involved and not listen to orders. The first responding officer was calmer than I would have been because I would have tased the moms stupid ass. I wish our man Justin would get more TV time...seen him on a couple of the first TH ones.

Okay. Fair enough.

I didn’t start the thread. I just offered my opinion on 5 mins of video that I watched. Sooo if I’m out of my lane then fine - my bad.

One of my closest friends is THPD - I far from took the side of those people. I didn’t say anything negative other than I thought it could have been handled a little better. If it was a “perfect arrest” then what the hell do I know.

I don't get why any city would agree to be on that show. It makes no sense.

According to this, they get no compensation for it:

And many now see it as bad publicity (from the article below):
Police departments in Bridgeport, Connecticut; Tulsa, Oklahoma; and Streetsboro, Ohio, decided not to renew their contracts to be on the program since it premiered in October 2016 as some local government leaders concluded the national spotlight on criminal activity overshadowed the positive things happening in their hometowns.

Understand what your saying but several of the departments that are on it has said it's drastically boosted their applications for the departments. This comes in a time where most PD's are begging for new members. The Richland County Sheriff's Dept that has been on it since the shows start says it's had an amazing effect on it's community now that those in the community can see first hand what officrs have to deal with on the job.

My understanding was the department did get some compensation.

We had a county commissioner that really decides to make a public stance on about every issues raise some questions about it like you just did.

I don’t see the issue... To highlight the fact that we’ve got crime here?! Well crime is all over the place. Crime realted TV shows have been a staple of TV and movie making in the US for years. Datline, Cops, 20/20, Unsolved Mysterys etc etc. and many many more all have an element of exposure and crime. I just don’t really get how anyone could view it as a bad thing? Maybe the local paper and news channels should stop covering crime as well and exposing it? I mean - those stories about criminal activity are basically the same thing if that is your argument?

I dono - I just don’t see it.
