Tommy Lynch started a firestorm on Twitter tonight without doing much of anything.

He went to 7th Elm as he often does being a member of the Pike Frat and spent his money. In doing so he realize a waitress at the establishment located on the Indiana State campus is wearing an IU hoodie. So he does what any good American would do and tweets his displeasure.

He didn't ask for a manager. He didn't get up and leave. He didn't even say anything to her personally.

Here is how I come into play. I see the tweet from Tommy and I call 7th and Elm seconds later, ask to speak with a manager and tell her:

Me: I just wanted to make you aware that an employee of yours is wearing an IU shirt tonight and you do realize your bar is located on Indiana State's campus correct??

Manager: Well yes sir, who is the employee do you know?

Me: Hell no I don't know. I saw it on Twitter but I can tell you that it's unacceptable so you can either fix it now or I will take my business some place else in the future.

Manager: oh no sir, I agree with you and I will find out who it is. I completly understand.

End of story righr?!?! Wrong!!

Well obviously the Elm took care of the situation because next thing you know you've got several folks including the girls dad (who was not previously on Twitter) tweeting at Tommy - calling him names. Same guy (dad) tweets 7th and Elm and threatens a law suite against Elm for discrimination. Your laughing by now I'm sure. True story.

So you might do one of three things - if your a Sycamore fan.

1. Drop Tommy a quick thanks for having school pride and fighting the good fight.

2. Make a call to Elm and thank them for doing the right thing - you shouldn't have to but this is an uphill battle in this town.

3. Have some Pride in your University. We're not saying you can't like IU also - it happens, we will always have IU fans in this town. But if your going to be employed on the ISU campus or be a student on the ISU campus or be at an ISU function (not just athletic) your going to be reminded of who and what we are.

Sycamores! It's who we are. It's what we love. It's what we stand for.

Stand up Indiana State, stand proud!

Ummm I can't get my screen shots to work from my phone for whatever reason maybe someone can hunt these down for us for story telling sake - if not I will post them tomorrow.

But you can find them on both Tommy Lynch and 7th and Elm timelines on Twitter - you will find the dad who threatens a law suite against the Elm. LMAO

nevermind, found the tweets, wow, what a bunch of assholes who are retaliating against Tommy

Remeber... Tommy didn't actually do anything LOL! Good thing I have a year plus self ban on twitter for this very thing.

These people are calling him names and acting like Loosier fans act. Tommy hasn't said one thing negative toward these folks. He handled it much better than I would have.

Nice of you to send Tommy a tweet Scott. Good work!

First off, I love 7th and Elm. It would be hard to not give them my business. They have the best wings in town and when they are half off I can't say no.

Second, I am not trying to fight anyone. I don't know names and I don't care about names. I simply used my freedom of speech to express myself and say that I felt other universities in an establishment basically on ISU's campus was inappropriate. I wish for no one to lose their job or for any discrimination acts to take place. If you feel the need to wear that IU sweatshirt that bad then head to IU's campus. It's on 60 miles down the road.

I will try to share some tweets tomorrow. I'm tired.

If any of you doubted me, I proudly wear Sycamores and I will defended no matter what.

Have a great night Sycamore Nation.

SSOM, thanks for sharing your number. We will keep in touch.

We're behind you Tommy and I am proud you stood up to the 7th and Elm employee (side note: I ate there at homecoming and that was the FIRST time I had ever been there and the wings are awesome) but let's be honest, is it an ISU-owned or operated establishment? The answer is NO. I would have done the same thing as you did but I live in Indy and if I saw a IUPUI sweatshirt in a Butler bar like Moe and Johnnies would it be wrong? Not too sure it would be. I guarantee you that I would call the Bally owner personally if I saw an IU jersey there, but it is not a felony and frankly, if they (the employee) thinks it is OK, you can't argue with them. Would I tip them. Nada. I would tell them personally and probably would write something on the ticket but if I would return, I would just ask for another section.

Well, that's ten minutes of my life I'll never get back...

IU fans kill me. Like a bunch of damned liberals - don't disagree with them or you're a hater. But they can be totally free to disagree with you. What a bunch of tools. The state's "flagship" university. I laugh...

Tommy, you know you won when they threw the "hater" term out. Congrats! When one cannot argue with any real argument, one must resort to name calling. It's the idiot's calling card.

You're right #47. I completely agree it's not a crime. I accept I will never chance that person from being an IU fan. But I believe I have the right to say it is inappropriate for that to happen.

ABSOLUTELY. Damn, I wish you were around back in my day. We would have had a ball with this stuff. Keep it up, my friend. I'm proud to call you a friend (even if you are a PIKE). :-)

I like the father threatening a discrimination lawsuit. Nothing like threatening legal action without knowing labor/employment laws. Indiana is an "at will" employment state. An employer can fire you for not liking the way you eat your lunch, say the word potato or how you dress.

screw you tree brother - i'm a liberal and hate IU.... LOL.

I think that in situations like this Lynch must feel alone on an island and it's really nice to know that he has a bunch of people that love ISU just as much as he does right here on this forum.

And I know we have some folks on this forum that call themselves IU fans also. Most of them do a pretty good job of not crossing that line and bringing it on to this forum. They don't have IU photos or tag lines and they rarely create IU related threads and for that reason I'm fine with them.

If people like Lynch don't tweet the things he did last night - if people don't stand up for Indiana State. If the Forrest doesn't give out Sycamore shirts to people wearing Loosier shirts at the ISU game you will NEVER change anything - but as aparent by the amount of support Tommy got on Twitter last night, the change has already started!!

Here's a little story for ya, many, many years ago my gf, one I didn't marry, brought me a windbreaker jacket. Nice of her, buttttttttttttttt, it said Indiana on it. So I just couldn't wear it so I fixed it by a permanent marker and wrote "STATE" under Indiana. Problem solved.............

I should clearly state I think 7th and Elm sucks. They have the worst trained wait staff in Terre Haute hands down - the food is good, the wait staff is awful.

They have ALWAYS handled my complaints well and the way they handled this situation will keep me coming back!

Did I mention the wait staff sucks!

Funny Jason they brought up a law suite. The dad mentions the daughter had been accepted into IU Law School - I get the impression they are from the lesser Gloomington area. Makes them special in many ways...

As if my hate for that school/town could grow any deeper.

Good Job Lynch!

Common sense is the problem here. As a server and supposedly an intelligent person that is going to law school one would think that the server would "get it". If you work at a establishment that does not require a uniform (in other words you can wear whatever you want that is deemed appropriate), it stands to reason that you would get better tips by wearing "team clothing" from the school that is located 100 yards away. Turn this around...lets say the server works at Kilroy's in Gloomington. Is she going to get good tips if she wears Purdue stuff? Of course not. This is a matter of common sense. If you are a server you are in it for tips, why would you wear something that would "most likely" make patrons angry, upset, or dislike you? I mean seriously, if you work at a local family restaurant that has a HUGE sunday brunch business (hundreds of families come in after church) are you going to wear a shirt that says, "I'm an atheist"? Or a shirt that says, "Evolution is the only truth"? Of course not...because the patrons would not want to tip you as well.

I see a server at 7th and Elm when I am in Terre Haute, I am going to tip them 22% instead of 18% or maybe add an additional $1 or $2 regardless of the percentage if they are wearing ISU stuff...its just a fact. But if they are wearing IU...I am going to give them 15% (maybe 20% if the service is amazing) but I am not going to add on another $2 just because...it is the way the world works. If the server doesn't understand that...there isn't much else that you can say or do for that individual. They just don't "get it".

Finally read the entire twitter argument...that is just downright hilarious!!!!!!! And the argument for why she should wear IU is because she is closely related to Bob Knight??? A man (who I have a great deal of respect for, even if most of you don't) but who will not even wear IU stuff himself and won't come back to the campus?? HILARIOUS! Lawsuits, HILARIOUS! IU fans pointing out that Larry left in '79...How's that Hoosier Classic tourney going up there in Btown? Oh..that's right, they stopped having it because ISU came in and beat the Hoosiers. HILARIOUS!!

It's funny you brought up Kilroy's. I tweeted at Kilroy's on Kirkwood at one point last night and asked that exact question. I still hope they respond.

I love 7th and Elm. Great food. I've never had problem with service in there.

The Bob Knight reference was one of many I didn't understand. I simply asked you to take a sweatshirt off. The fact you have to justify why you should be allowed to wear it. I referenced Auburn-Bama and Michigan-OSU. IU-ISU is nothing close to that but there are parts that are true.

I tweeted links to a Bama family giving a young lady NO TIP because she was an Auburn fan.
We all heard about the Ohio Governor telling Ohio people to not use the letter M.

Take your IU sweatshirt off. Please.
