The Starter Level
I'm looking at the websites for WTHI, WTWO, CH 59 Indianapolis, etc. and I don't see much at all about the Sycamores opening day/media day. Am I overlooking something or are the local TV stations being lazy/dismissive?

I would suggest that "lazy" is not the word. The local media is pretty darn active thism whole month with Colts camp going on. They do an excecllent job covering the camp. I just don't know that they have enough resources. lol On the flip side when is or was the Sycamores media day? lol

well....

channels 2 and 10 were at media day.....so was channel 59 in indianapolis.....the indy star doesnt cover indiana state......due to lack of manpower, so they say.....they concentrate on iu, pacers, colts....their second tier is purdue, notre dame, ball state and butler (but only in basketball season)...third tier in county high schools, particularly football and basketball....then the indianapolis indians, iupui, university of indianapolis, indy ice...

they pick indiana state stuff off the wires...they sometimes use what the indiana state sports informaton office sends them......but not very often.....i should know....i pounded my head against that indy star wall (as well as the indy tv and radio stations) for years when i worked in the indiana state sports information office.....

they will tell you...no interest from their readers and listeners....they dont hear or get complaints in any great number....so they figure not enough people care....they have told me that point blank.....in a nice way perhaps...but the message is still the same.....

media day was friday at memorial stadium.....

the tribstar, channels 2, 10 and 59 were there...the statesman was there.....that's it for local media coverage....lol....

Tom I tend to agree with them the media... They have enough to cover without worrying about Sycamore athletics. I mean sure it would be nice if we could get some coverage, but that's just un realistic.

I am pretty much a fan of anything and everything Jason Penskey from WTWO does, other than that everyone local is weak sauce, except when Tom James is reporting for the Tribune Star!

Ha... No I just learned to wear a bullit proof vest on this forum, I learned that either a. you have a lot of supporters on here or b. everyone on here hates me. I am going to say it's a mix of both a and b. So I figure either I could make a joke and say everyone in the local media besides Jason is weak sauce and that includes you Tom James and you and I would have know that I was totally kidding but "Joe Shmoe" would not have known that and suggested that I go post on Valley Talk. So I decided that I would just say what I really felt (because I do enjoy everything you have done about the Colts) but you see me being postitve gets so much less attention....

More coverage would be nice, but usually the state media spend more time on IU and PU and ND because that's who most people, even in TH, care more about. Wish it wasn't that way, but ...

terre haute....or indy?????
There is no coverage in Indy, so I was just talking about Terre Haute as being local.

The Trib does a decent job, but considering they're 2 blocks away from campus, there should be much more coverage. Not everything has to be full blown pieces, either. For instance, the Indy Star does a Q&A with an Indians player that takes up a small box -- stuff like this could be done to further Sycamore athletics.

I read those religiously and started going to Indian's games because of them -- I attend probably 5-10 games a year now. There is a reason the newspaper industry is about to die and it's because they don't focus on what matters -- I can turn on CNN or Fox to get politics, I need stuff I can't get elsewhere in local papers.

For instance, I'm shocked that Indiana State hasn't developed some sort of "campus correspondant" with the Trib to cover sports -- they could do these fluff pieces that wouldn't need to tie up Golden and provide additional coverage probably free of charge because it could be an unpaid internship.

I have to say I have enjoyed golden's columns immensely since he started writing for the Trib. Much better coverage than in the past of sycamore athletics. oh and go state!

The Star is a horrible newspaper anyway. Over here in Indy you never see or hear anything about ISU, which I understand that "readers" and "watchers' of news in Indy don't complain...but here is my issue. If you open the sports page of the Star to the second page there will be a list of Upcoming Games that day or the next day. They will have Ball State, IU, Purdue, Notre Dame, Wabash, Hanover, IUPUI, University of Indianapolis, etc. They will literally have every school that you can imagine in there, I have literally seen Hanover College games listed in there...Hanover a private school of 1000 students. I have never seen ISU listed as having any upcoming game. I am not asking for a coverage of those games, I am only asking the Star to list upcoming games for people such as myself that don't have schedules memorized and don't have season tickets. If they can put Hanover or Wabash in their list why in the world can't they put ISU.

Also, just a point about TV news...if any school sponosors or buys advertisement from the local network they will get covered it is simple. Ball State a good example of this. They continually sponsor WISH-TV 8 in Indy and low and behold, Ball State gets much, much more coverage on channel 8. Channel 8 wants to keep an advertiser happy so they do what Ball State wants...

This is an area where we can make a difference. Send e-mails to all of our media outlets that you want more/better/different coverage of Sycamore athletics - give them your ideas and see if anything comes from it. You are their clients.

The coverage is certainly frustrating, but even on campus they struggle. The Statesman somehow doesn't even manage to cover all of the events that are a part of Sycamore athletics.

from what i have been told..in talking to the indy star people....

is that they just dont hear anything from disgruntled fans in the area about lack of coverage...and they just figure...that if the fans and alums in the area dont care...why should they.....as they say, the squeaky wheel gets the grease.....

fans of isu who live in and around the indy area...can either sit on their hands...and complain about the lack of coverage.....or make some noise...by calling the indy star, wish, wrtv, wthr, fox59.....as well as the sports call-in shows.....on espn1070, 950, or 1260....and make yourselves known...loudly...and often.....

since i live in indy...and since i am a member of the media.....i talk to these guys all the time...i talk up isu when given the opportunity...some times when the sports radio stations have me on to talk about the colts...they know that i used to work at isu...so they will often drop in a few questions....about the sycamores.....

i fly an indiana state athletics flag outside my house...you'd be shocked by the number of people who stop and ask me where i got it...did i go to isu....when did i go...do i know so and so......people are shocked because they just don't see isu stuff around the indy area.....so if you care.....show your pride....

one other thing...try going to one of the stores in the indy area...and buying a shirt or something that says indiana state on it...can't do it...won't find it......

The only ISU merchandise I have ever seen in Indianapolis is a hat at Lids. That is it.

As far as media coverage...I am going to continue to complain to the Star and news outlets...but I have always gotten the same story...ISU is in a different market because of the stations and news outlets in Terre Haute...I guess I can see that, but is it actually a fact or an excuse?

Excuse. I believe IU has stations and news outlets in Bloomington.

Case in point! ISU just doesn't get the coverage...nor do alums in the area appear to really want it...atleast that is what we are told.

isu alums and fans in the indy area need to diluge the indy star....

tv and radio stations with complaints....make your voices heard.....keep complaining.....write letters to the editor...call the paper, tv stations and radio stations....let them know that you are out there.....and that you want information....threaten to cancel your subscriptions...lol....

This has been one of my pet peeves for a long time. Isn't Indy the home of the largest contingent of ISU graduates? Muncie has channel 49 so I guess that takes out the local media excuse. Will Hampton use to be bias to BSU because he is a alum and his dad used to be mayor of Muncie. Doesn't ISU have some sort of office downtown Indy on Ohio street? I am rambling but the Indy media needs to be fair and give ISU their equal time with BSU.
