I'm sorry to hear you've had to experience that, Broker! Since you still don't have sense of taste/smell back, I consider you still in recovery and I wish you the best.

My spouse and I have taken this seriously from Day-1 (back in March). We're very fortunate in that we're able to work from home and when we do leave the house, we wear a mask. No ifs, ands, or buts. I wish the rest of the country (urban, rural, and everywhere in between) would do the same.

And I agree with your thoughts about the ISU basketball season.

@BrokerZ glad you made it out.

I've had a handful of family members that have had it and it's hit every single one differently. I think that is what makes the virus so scary to some. My wife has friends that she worked with at St. Vincent in Indianapolis that have died -- 2 in the last month. One of her other friends that works there is about to lose her mom and COVID caused a brain infection but not the other "normal" symptoms.

My wife also tested positive for having the antibodies back in April but I've tested negative every time. She works with the homeless veteran population here in Vegas for the VA.

This is a scary virus . The fact that some do not believe the severity of it is unbelievable . I personally know two people who have passed away one was a 27 year old with zero known health issues . I have had multiple family members who have tested positive with this virus and they will tell you it is absolute hell . Thankfully they have all survived . Ladies and gentlemen this virus is no joke . It is not a political item . Please even if we do not see eye to eye on things I still care about your health , Sometimes it takes shit like this to realize just how fucked up we become with our political beliefs . Honestly as much as I hate to say this if we cancel the season and that prevents these young men from becoming ill then so be it . Wear your masks , practice social distance and sanitize the shit out of your hands every single time you get back in your car after running inside somewhere regardless of how much time you are in the place . I live less than 5 miles from Gotta Hav we used to meet up talk Indiana State sports over breakfast of several beers and since this Pandemic hit we have done this a total of one time and it sucks but thankfully we are healthy .

Thanks, Jason. I’m assuredly one of the lucky ones and I still had a very hard time with my recovery.

My wife also tested positive for the antibodies back in May, and she still contracted the virus from me this time. Although her symptoms were much less than mine, she still got sick again. It’s clearly true that you can get it more than once.

I only shared my personal story to make sure others continue to take this seriously and stay safe. Any bullshit you read on the internet or hear people say that it’s not as bad as the flu...they are all lies. It’s bad, and it’s coming for you. Don’t be cavalier with your health. I did everything right and still managed to catch it. COVID doesn’t discriminate.

Wear your mask and avoid large, indoor public gatherings. That means restaurants, and, yes, unfortunately sporting events. I caught it attending a World Series game here in Dallas.

We've come a long way in our country from the day when EVERYONE did their duty, and got SALK shots, and the ORAL SABIN sugar cubes to prevent getting POLIO.

With that said, I'll just leave this here.....

Measles (sub COVID) outbreaks occur when people who are not protected from the virus are infected and spread the disease to unvaccinated or under-vaccinated populations. To control measles (COVID) and prevent outbreaks and deaths, vaccination coverage rates with the required MCV1 and MCV2 must reach 95 percent and be maintained at national and subnational levels. MCV1 coverage has been stagnant globally for more than a decade at between 84 and 85 percent. MCV2 coverage has been steadily increasing but is only now at 71 percent. Vaccination coverage against measles (COVID) remains well below the 95 percent or higher needed with both doses to control measles (COVID) and prevent outbreaks and deaths.

The same is going to be TRUE with COVID...we will need 95 of the population vaccinated, to prevent further outbreaks and DEATH in 2021 and beyond.

If people choose not to, that's great cuz that's going to leave lotsa Toilet Paper and other paper supplies on the shelves at Wally World, for those who get vaccinated. LOL!

Saying not to eat in a restaurant is one thing, but I drive a truck and I am out on the road for 2-3 weeks at a time. If I don't eat at a restaurant then I don't get to eat a decent meal. If they start shutting everything down again I will really have to think hard on if it's worth being out on the road. It would be nice if these governors would at least allow restaurants in truck stops to stay open and serve people with CDL licenses. I don't expect that common sense to happen sadly.

I feel ya man. But everyone is going to be inconvenienced in multiple ways. If exceptions are made then the whole system breaks down and the goal will not be attained.

I get your point about common sense. Early in Illinois they closed the bike trails, which made no sense to me since the one I live by (and it had actual barricades up) is so remote you can walk it for miles without seeing another soul (Hennepin Canal). The option for truck stops to still offer meals to go makes sense.

Not getting a vaccine though? I'll take my chances with getting it as soon as it's available to me and will keep getting it as needed.

I’m 30 years old and have never taken a vaccine since I was a teen. I’ve never had the flu, and I’ve not gotten COVID either.

But as soon as the people in need of the vaccine have taken it, I believe the general population should take it as well.

COVID is getting closer and closer to us. Months ago you all were probably 3 or 4 degrees separated from the only person you knew who had it. Now, it feels like many around and close me, are getting it. It could be a Texas issue, but the rest of the country isn’t immune. I know in my home county of Fountain County they have an infection rate of nearly 12%. That’s incredibly high, especially for such a rural country.

Are you saying 12% have it or 12% of people who get a test are positive?

edit: 623 cases and 16,xxx population.

Anecdotal, but as I mentioned, my wife works with the homeless veterans here in Las Vegas for the VA.

They have three shelters they work with and 40 of the 60 vets tested positive within the last week. Those are just the vets that would consent to taking a test so the number is likely higher. Many of them believe COVID is a hoax and refuse to acknowledge it as real. This is why the messaging at the national level has been such a point of contention for many.

I think there is much more nuance than just calling it a hoax, for example the effectiveness of lockdowns and masks and the tradeoffs in other types of death they will cause.

For rational thinking people, sure. The problem is there are a bunch of low functioning folks roaming around. The hoax line is the exact verbiage my wife hears on a daily basis.

I'm sure most on here think that I think it is a hoax which is false. I just think people that are really old and/or have underlying illnesses need to be extra cautious.

In my case I'm in my mid 20's and extremely healthy. Since the pandemic started I have played basketball at parks all over the country with other people. I have attended a very highly attended dirt race in Kansas. I eat inside restaurants almost every day. Sounds pretty careless, but I'd be willing to bet $100 right now that I have already had the virus. My company had me running all over NY and NJ when they were getting slammed by the virus and I caught something back then that had a lot of the symptoms of COVID (bad cough, sore throat, headache, fever, cold chills) and I never get sick.

For the record I do not live around anyone that is "high risk" and I certainly would not be hugging on an older person right now either (unless they absolutely insisted on it, then that's their choice and they know the risks).

My big thing is that I want to live life to the fullest and I'm not going to let fear control my life. I was told several years ago that driving a car across northern Mexico (Texas to Mazatlan) alone was a stupid dangerous idea and I had everybody telling me not to do it. Jokes on them because I did it anyways and have awesome memories that I will never forget.

The thing for me is that tomorrow is never promised and I'm not going to waste my time being scared of a virus that I have a 99.9% chance of surviving. I could get killed in a trucking wreck tomorrow, but it doesn't mean that I shouldn't get on the highway tomorrow. A good quote from the movie The Shawshank Redemption; "Get busy living or get busy dying".

As for basketball, I played in high school and I would want to play this winter, especially if I was a D1 athlete.

Never assumed you thought it was a hoax but yeah, kinda assumed you were someone young not that worried about it. I get it. Live your life and live it responsibly (with others in mind) and I think you'll find most people understanding and wishing you well. If you're cruising across the country living your life to the fullest without ever wearing a mask while around people, most of us will think what a selfish dick. There is a vaccine (probably more coming) and an end in sight.

While many want to "Live their Life" I ask at what expense ? As someone who works with Vets and their families I am forced to interact with them at the lowest part of their life's and in order to provide the service they deserve I have to expose myself to them and all they carry with them . Now many will say well you chose this job and I agree I wouldn't change it for the world however many of the families I come in contact with has no understanding that I as an essential worker need my protection against them . As well many do the exact same thing with the waitresses , cooks, cashiers and other " Essential Workers" . The bad part is if one of these workers tests positive the spread of the virus continues to grow . While we have promising 90-95% effective vaccines on the horizon We still do not have an established effect treatment for those 5-10% that the vaccine does not work for or the individuals who chose not to get the vaccine . So while hope is around the corner many more will continue to become ill and some will die .We cannot depend on governments to completely do away with this we hold some responsibility on our own and that is sacrificing urges to eat out and run to Disney for a little while longer to keep this from expanding anymore.

When you say "selfish dick" have you considered that your preferred response to the virus might end up causing more people's death while not preventing any virus related deaths?

Soooo... Your contention is "mask wearing" causes more deaths than preventing deaths?

my contention is that mask mandates have shown no evidence of preventing the spread of the disease. Im also saying that any lockdown will end up causing the death of more people than the virus over the next ~5 years.

Looking at a singular behavior such as just wearing masks is beetle headed. Preventing a virus requires a defense in depth approach. All homes have front door locks, so why do people get security systems, move to gated communities, get guard dogs, buy home defense weapons, etc. Because each time you add a layer to your defensive approach, it increases the probability that your overall approach will be successful.

Masks are only effective if the individuals wearing them are wearing them correctly as well as maintain proper social distance, implement a rigorous hand washing protocol, limit touching their faces, limit touching foreign surfaces, refrain from extraneous public appearances where large crowds gather, minimize intimate social gatherings in their homes, etc.

If Americans weren't so damn selfish, self absorbed, and really cared about "thy neighbor" like they love to claim, we could remain open like Asian countries have done and not seen the drastic spikes.
