Last Odum post today - I promise!

My dad was telling me this at lunch, I didn't see it happen but I know exactly what he was referencing.

So late in the second half a foul is called on us - sends SIU to the line. I believe Pendleton heads to the line, they give him the ball and Odum looks at the official and says, "hey he is not supposed to be shooting".

Refs go to the video and sure enough one of SIU worst FT Shooters was supposed to be shooting.

He misses one or both and Odum looks at the official and says something to the effect of, "see why they didn't have him at the line".

The refs didn't notice, Lansing didn't notice and hell most fans didn't even catch it. But that's pretty big in a close game.

I remember that play, certainly didn't realize it was Odum who pointed it out to the refs.

My dad sits right down in the corner on that end and watched the whole thing unfold. He couldn't believe it - I mean that kid is just so locked in.

He plays the game. He coaches the game and he officiates the game! Just a fantastic floor general.

Myself and several others around me saw right away that SIU was trying to switch free throw shooters and were in the process of discussing if we were seeing that correctly and then we saw Odum go over to the ref to tell him. It was Odum that was called for the foul so he should know who he fouled. Great play by a smart kid. Glad someone else saw this and posted about it, too.

Wasn't it Howard Sharpe at Gerstmeyer that would have Harley and Arley Andrews switch jerseys at halftime if one was in foul trouble? Basketball coaches are, ahem, clever when it comes to gaining a perceived, or real, advantage...

I guess it's only cheating if you get caught...

Absolutly - great point!

At the same time, a lot going on in the ball game - just shows how locked in he is. I mean don't get me wrong - that's his job and all so I don't want to overstate it.

Talk to people outside of Gerstmeyer's district, and you'll discover a lot about the "politics" of TH basketball back in the dayz...:) Hell, Otter Creek people are still fuming over the Vigo consolidation issue around 62 B.C., frankly because they had a beautiful new school to move into and the BEST talent in Vigo Schools matriculating thru their system @ the time...which Garfield profited from after the consolidation. Recall the song, "I got da power...":shocked2:

Well, that was certainly the belief by MANY opposing coaches! And Sharpe (aka Sharpie) certainly didn't HELP matters by alluding to it / not outright DENYING that it.

Is it cheating??? All depends, the talking heads would be laughing about it on TV if a player got away with it. It's in the same category as taking the low box when your team is shooting FTs. I've seen that occur hundreds of times, NBA to HS...

Rather than making yet another thread - worth mentioning that Odum gave his 1,000 points ball away to a special needs kid that is a former Terre Haute South Basketball Manager and was at the Indiana State game vs. SIU when the ball was given to Odum.

Jake Odum is a class act on what I consider to be a team with class.
