Most outrageous rumor???

There is always a rumor around any college athletic program. What was the most outrageous, funniest or just totally absurd rumor related to ISU sports when you were on campus? This could be fun if everyone participates.

I'll go with this one. Believe it was '66. The B10 wanted to give Northwestern thke boot--Wildcats just weren't competitive in most sports. Indiana State would be invited to join the conference. A lot of peeps said it would take 2 or 3 years to build football into a contender. All other sports were expected to do well from the beginning.

Back in May of 2012 on a early Sunday morning, there was a rumor going around Cessna Stadium in Wichita Kansas that went to the tune of "Well Wichita State locked it up and is going to win the championship". That ended up not being true.

Outrageous is one word, the only place I've ever heard rumors of THAT rumor is this forum...

I had a native Hautean claim the Hulmans approached State about donating the bulk of their fortune and acres of land on the far east side of town IF State agreed to re-locate AND rename the school after them... State declined but tiny lil' Rose Poly accepted and today... rose-hulman.

I didn't believe the Hautean's claim, just as I have never believed the rumor that the Big Ten wanted Indiana State.

I once heard we were getting rid of football, and then I also heard we were building a football stadium on the riverfront. Not sure which one is true...

I heard the rumor about the Hulman family offered money if we renamed the school. Instead, we opted for money for Hulman Center.

There's the rumor, Bill. That was our vintage but I actually believe it was true. Shortly after, they approached Rose Tech. You know the rest of the story now. Great idea. I also heard the Northwestern rumor as well in the 70's. I think our ego's were a tad pumped up on kool-aid.

I remember both of those rumors, actually it was late 60's. The Rose Poly rumor dated way back to when the ISU campus started to move off of the Quad. Supposedly downtown businessmen did not want them to move because all of all the student business that a downtown campus would bring in, therefore rumor was that downtown businesses kicked in money to keep the school downtown. Big 10 rumor had absolutely no basis other than inflated egos and wishful thinking!

Exactly. I think the whole "Hulman" thing came up when Dr. Rankin was asking for support for the then, University-Civic Center. The vast majority clearly were against moving to the "burbs." Probably President Rankin's finest decision.

If the "Hulman State" rumor was factual, and I believe it was, I would npt of had a real problem with it. It would have been a "proper name" if Wright State, Ball State, Muarry State and others have been. And I can't forget Wichita (is not a) State!

I've never believed that rumor regarding Hulman $$ because the Hulmans donated the land for the current Rose campus & $$$ circa 1917...

Alan Rankin was 3 years old, & Tony Hulman, Jr would have been 16; likely they weren't their legacies wrt the Indiana State Normal School...

While the State campus would have been 6-8 buildings, centered around the Quad; whereas Rose Poly, was 2-3 buildings. I seriously doubt that State could have be relocated for the ~$295K that Rose donated (he also donated 10 acres at Locust & 13th Sts)

** Historical Note ** Rose Poly, nee' Terre Haute School of Industrial Sciences, was chartered in 1875, actually opened for "business" in 1883; it was ~34 YO when the Hulmans donated the $$ and land.

Muarry or Murray isn't a state either... The school is named for the town. And its a stretch to say the University was named for U.S Rep John Murray.
