This is without a doubt the best sports message board I have seen. I'm just trying to get people awake and posting before the first football game.

Who gets your nod for the 3 most recognizable voices in sport--radio or TV? I;ll start things of with my picks.

Vince Sculley
Keith Jackson
Lindsay Nelson

I can't remember when Vin was not calling baseball. When you match his voice with his knowledge of the the game it makes him the best ever in my opinion.

Keith Jackson was the voice of college football. Saturdays without him was often a day without football in our house.

Lindsay Nelson's description of yardage as "a short 1" or "a long one or a short 2" should be considered as one of the best lines in broadcasting.

If we were to open this up to the greatest voice in broadcasting the winner was Paul Harvey--good day.

I hope several people respond to this--I find things like this entertaining.

I love this topic.

Sadly my top 3 are all but done calling sporting events. But the top 3 had huge influences on me and my love for sports as a kid.

Harry Carey - as a lifelong Cubs fan Harry is #1 in my book for obvious reasons. I think the stories about him and his late night at Chicago bars are fascinating. He would be fired pretty quickly in the PC world we live in today - but in his day he was perfectly fine.


Tom Durkin - his absolutely brilliant call of 2005 Kentucky Derby is forever grained in my memory. Durkin doesn’t get the credit he deserves because horse racing is just not mainstream enough apparently...


Verne Lundquist - in one word the guy is awesome!! Golf, Football, College Hoops it matters not he always delivers the goods!


Next 3 for me are probably:

Joe Buck
Dicky V
Dick Enberg

Cawood Ledford, it was damn shame he called uk mbb games but Ledford had a very recognizable voice. Vin Scully, it's never baseball season til Scully calls a game. Vince Jackson was college football.

Least favorite/most irritating... DICK V.
 
Have to agree with you on Verne Lundquist. Loved listening to him call football and basketball. Always seemed like a genuine person and great man.

I know he rubs some people the wrong way, but I love Gus Johnson. So much energy. He called the greatest college basketball game I have ever seen, Xavier and Kansas State in the NCAA tourney some years ago, and you could tell he was exhausted by the end of the game.

Thom Brenneman is good for me. Great voice, can be opinionated which turns people off, but I like that.

Also like Bill Rafferty and a "newer" guy that I don't see calling games as much as I would like, Jon Sciambi.

Also loved Sunday night baseball when Jon Mller and Joe Morgan called games.

Not a Tiger fan but probably appropriate with the tournamnet he's having this weekend. This is just an incredible shot and an equally good call by Verne

Harry Carey is #1 for me. growing up in the 80's, I would have a little radio to listen to in the afternoon while we played whiffle ball or watch WGN after we got cable. In those days Harry used to do the first 3 and last 3 innings on TV and the middle 3 on the radio side.

Vin Scully is #2. I lived in El Paso and we got KTLA. I don't like the Dodgers I would just listen to Vin. It was Great.

Of Coarse Keith Jackson IS the voice of college football

A couple old school guys are Cosell and Jim McKay (the wide world of sports opening alone)

One active guy that is up there for me also is Bob Costas. He has done everything from NBA to MLB to the Olympics and more during my lifetime.
 
Harry callas is the. Dude on the films, and he was also the voice of the Philadelphia Phillies
 
Most have already been mentioned.

Being a child of the 80s and 90s. Watched a lot of NBA basketball with my Bulls dynasty. Marv Albert was usually on the call.

How could I forget - Johnny Most. The voice of the Boston Celtics. “DJ at the top of the key. He fiddles and diddles...”
 
I can still hear Johnny Most..”bird fiddles and diddles, top of the key, jab step, pulls back, shoots, three!”
 
I can't believe I didn't think of Johnny Most. I used to lay in bed and listen to Celtic games on HI99. He was the best. A Homer and proud of it
He had some of the biggest ears you will ever see.
