Athletics

Under the plan, several athletic facilities, including track/field, soccer, softball and football, would eventually be moved west of Third Street across from campus. Within the next several years, Bradley expects to move track and field facilities to an area between the river and First Street.

The plan states, “The condition of the ISU athletic facilities is such the university has little choice but to begin planning for a number of new facilities and major renovations. Many of the existing competition facilities are ranked at or near the bottom of the Missouri Valley Conference.

“The under-utilized land west of U.S. 41 (Third Street) has been identified as the appropriate location for the development of new athletic competition and training facilities.”

The plan cites the availability of large tracts of land and the goal of supporting the city’s effort to revitalize the riverfront.

Bradley emphasizes the plan as presently written and drawn for athletic facilities is “a concept. You can do a lot of different things within that concept.”

Some of it could take 20 years, such as construction of a new football stadium.

The plan will likely call for the purchase of some retail establishments, but “that doesn’t mean necessarily there wouldn’t be any retail on Third Street across the street from us,” Bradley said.

Athletic facilities would be funded primarily through private giving, Bradley said.

“We have a lot of other things that will take an awful lot of effort,” he said. “The football stadium is nowhere near the top of my agenda list right now.”

Great news!

Also from the same article:

• With the track moving to the west of Third Street, ISU would like to develop a new main entrance or “gateway” to campus off Third Street that “lets the world know we’re here,” the president said previously.

Bradley believes ISU can make a lot of progress on its student housing and the new Third Street “gateway” entranceway over the next five to seven years.

ISU has quite a bit of control over those projects, he said. It has less control over projects that must be funded through philanthropy or state appropriations, including athletic facilities and academic buildings.

He does believe a new track and field facility west of Third Street is achievable in the next few years.

As in the other thread, this has to be the plan. To get this thing going in the next year or two. Though the plan will include alot of housing changes (renovating and building new res halls). Those will take time because you have to have space to move the students too...if you renovate a res Hall you have to have beds in which for them to sleep in another building or location, first. So that is going to take extended amounts of time. Building a new track facility doesn't require anything but the acquisition of land, and they have just done this.

Agreed but you have to assume that they are going to include - locker rooms, some (minimal) stadium type seating, video board, restrooms, concession.... My assumption is they will put the locker rooms in that ICON building and extend the track off the building?

One day all of the Indiana State athletic facilites will be located just west of campus between the river and 3rd st. You can tell that is what they are shooting for here - they want to have everything located in a central area and they have pointed out this to be the area. Hopefully they clean up the river and put some nice blue lighting underneath the bridges and all that good stuff! That would look really neat!

That would be cool. It would also be cool if they dedged the river to allow for boats to come down and you could tailgate on a boat. But that is a pipe dream with a river a shallow as the Wabash! I think that this is the plan, as you stated, build everything over there. It only makes sense and is the best use of the land. All I can say is it is about time they started doing what makes the most sense, rather than what is "easy". I am very, very excited about the future in all this, can't wait for the master plan that i can actually read!!

Yeah you figure they can do some neat things - doubt that the Bash is ever deep enough to do anything like what you are talking about. But as far as pedestrian bridges across the Bash and just lighting and signage as you come across the bridge. How cool will that be to come across the river and see stadium lights? Much nicer than driving down Wabash Ave.

I mean if they would just clean the banks up a little bit and get rid of all the brush that has washed up on the shore of the west and east side over the years it would look much better. It's one of those "a little bit could go a long way" types of things.

Oh yes...if they cleaned it up it would be substantial. I do think they could easily do a warf type fo thing down the water and get some bars and restaurants in there and the lighting and signage would really set it off.

Yeah I know the folks that designed the Riverscape plan, that was their vision. Now if something like that "cold really" happen in Terre Haute is yet to be seen. I wont be the person to say it's not possible. But they have a whole lot of barriers to break threw and I am not just talking about financial barriers.

Athletic Annex West

I was driving around that area west of campus this weekend looking at what buildings are there and which are vacant to get an idea of how many buildings the University would need to acquire to complete what the Master Plan maps out and I noticed a building at approximately 1st and Eagle with about 14 trucking docks on it but the sign near the front door is one of the black Indiana State University signs that says the building is "Athletic Annex West."

Does anybody have any idea what this building is used for? It seems to be located right on the location the Master Plan expects the new track and field facility to be.

I'm not familiar with this area--just too far back to remember. Is this planned complex in an area where flooding is a concern? If so, how are these conditions going to be addressed?\

Flooding is not a concern on that land - all of the land that they have purchased is high enough and is not a factor at all...

Im no expert, and am going off memory. But the foundation bought that building 2-3 years ago and it is planned to be used in masterplan, I thought? I thought it was "temporary" until they could tear it down and build. But I could be completely wrong and probably am completely wrong. It was an old "paint factory" or something like that.

If you are talking about the "ICON" purchase, that was just this December:

They plan on eventually tearing down the "Flat roof" portion of the building to make room for the outdoor track. The taller, "Slatted Roof" part of the building will remain for indoor training facilities.

The property in question is located on the corner of N. 1st St. and Sycamore Street.
The "Slatted Roof" part is next to the river...
