So these guys catch flack for holding out and not showing up for training camp and you know I can understand why they catch hell. They signed a contract and they ought to honor that and more importantly ought to respect the organization and their teammates enough to show up for camp, right?

Well two guys for the Colts Reggie and Mathis both were hold outs and both not surprisingly showed up for camp. Thus their is know story, media would rather talk about the guys who held out. Well for what it's worth Reggie Wayne is underpaid and deserved more money, granted he didn't show up in the playoffs last year - but he was seeing double coverage all over the field and he got shut off. The guy is a pro if their ever was one - he put his contract issues aside and showed up for camp. I don't think guys like Wayne and Mathis get enough credit for doing the right thing.

You ask, why should you get credit for doing the right thing? Well because their are so many self centered figures in sports that don't do the right thing. Reg and Mathis waited them out and attempted to negotiate a contact, when it came down to the final hour they did the right thing!

Props to them for doing the right thing!

Good for them for reporting to camp despite wanting a new deal. I really don't have a problem with NFL players that hold out for wanting a new deal. Take Darrelle Revis for instance, he is arguably the best corner in the league yet there are six other defensive backs on his team that make more money than him. In the NFL you have to get paid when you have the opportunity because they could cut you tomorrow and not owe you a dime.

I think you might give the Colt's some credit too, for instilling the right values in their players. Holding the line over the years in these kind of matters never hurt either. The Colt's are a very well-run franchise, and VERY consistent in the way they handle these matters and with good people holding the reigns to boot. Yes, Polian can be a pompous ass, but he is a consistently pompous negotiator. I respect Reggie and Robert "seeing" the light and doing the right thing, but as Butler advertises the "Butler Way" the Colt's certainly live by the "Colt's Way" and we should be proud to be apart of that. There's a reason this team has won more than any other team in the last decade.

I agree with this thought...Revis's holdout is legit...in NFL money standards he is getting paid a can of spam every week to take away an entire half of the field...It's easy for us to say "well he signed a contract" when we have never been in that situation....

On the other hand, how many of those holding out would agree to a pay cut if they have a bad year?:eek7: Should it work both ways? What about a base salary with incentives for meeting certain goals? That happens all the time. What about a base salary with agreed upon penalties for a poor season? I'm not talking about the average player--they may very well be cut. What about the superstar who has a disappointing season?

They can be released....u make it sound like players are just juicing these money strapped owners dry....lol

All is fair for sure - their are going to be underpaid people... But I guess when you have someone like Reg who has proved that he is not only a elite WR in the NFL but even a better person outside of football I would think someone like that would deserve your best if you are a class organization like the Colts so often gloat about...

Since Reginal singed his last contract he has lead the league in receiving yards, catches and touchdowns. But yet he is the 16th highest paid receiver in the league. I ask you, is Reggie the 16th best receiver in the league? Would the Colts have made it to the Super Bowl without him last year? Would the Colts have won as many games as they have since Marvin retired without Reggie Wayne?

The answer is absolutely, positively NO!~ Does Manning have a lot to do with his productivity? Obviously yes and that's why the Colts are intent on making him the highest paid player in football, fine that's great. But Manning needed a guy like Reggie just like Reggie needed a guy like Manning to accomplish what he has. It takes two and Reggie has helped Manning continue to be great, by working hard, being on the field and honoring his current shitty contract.

To be honest Morgan I agree Reggie Wayne deserves a better contract for sure but so does Revis...and Revis has a much more odd situation to consider....D'brickashaw ferguson was given an extension on a contract that still had 4 years on it...While Revis was still like, "Hey, I am the best DB in the NFL and no one seems to care that I am being paid basically the same or less than Josh Wilson." I agree Revis deserves a better contract and all signs point to that was what caused both Mangold and Revis to hold out...

Oh and I don't disagree with that at all... I mean he for sure deserves mo-money. But I think all would agree he still has an obligation to attend camp. I don't just not show up for work one day because I think I deserve mo-money. I mean maybe I do, maybe I don't but I don't have leverage. If NFL players were not so overpaid as it is they wouldn't have any leverage.

With that being said one could argue they hold out because they have less leverage. If they go out on the football field tomorrow and have a career ending injury they are SOL, their mo-money is not guaranteed in their contract like the NBA per-say. I think you still need to show up for camp, it says something about who you are as a person and who you are as a business man. You still have a job to do and you still have people and fans that are counting on you.

It's for this very reason that I am more of a Reggie Wayne fan than I am a Colts fan. I loved the guy before, but I respect the way he takes care of business. All I have to say is eff the Colts if they don't want to pay the guy - let him go some place else. I will just cheer for that team.

No, not at all. Players and owners play a game with contracts; each thinking they will have an edge. Long term contracts favor the owner or the player? Depends on how things play out. I just feel that if you sign a contract you honor it. No matter how it plays out you honor your word. It's called integrity.

so do you cry injustice if the player is released after a bad season???? the current system favors management heavily....

Lots of people I have worked with have been released after a bad year. And they certainly don't make the NFL minimum. If a player on a long term contract is released is the financial obligation of the team erased?

More to the point, I feel an owner with integrity and fairness should offer a new contract/bonus/incentive to a contracted player who performs much above expectations.

I am just saying I dont believe the current sitch with Revis is fair and I think he is getting butchered in the public eye when in all reality...what did he do?
