SIU chokes away a win at St Louis tonight, losing after being up most of the 2nd half.

hope we can finish what SIU couldn't

Got to push the ball. St. Louis doesn't have much offensive firepower and wants to make it a half court, grind it out defensive battle. Playing even younger and more inexperienced players than we are. Push, push, push.

Talk in another thread about Gant & Kitchell playing soft. Kitchell has played that way since he arrived. He won't get any tougher. Super demeanor for off court but could be a lot more aggressive between the end lines. Gant not necessarily soft but does disappear from game to game. Always same lame excuse from a poster or two on here is always guards can't get him the ball. Bullshit! Go get the ball veteran. They call that a "rebound". He should be getting a double-double every time out. There is no next season anymore. This game will show a lot about how these two guys specifically are going to be able to perform this whole season as Coach Jim Crews will test their toughness for sure & every team in the Valley will keep the film onhand for the future.

Crews loves to play old Valley style grind it out in the half-court.

If you're going to call me out, at least call me out. Passive aggressive much?

Hey Gant, come set this high ball screen so that when I drive off it you can then turn and fight to the rim only for me to kick it out. Then you'll need to run back out and set another high ball screen and do the same thing over and over. Then after we do that a couple times and one of us finally decides to shoot, go get the rebound if we miss, ok? What? No, we're not going to run plays for you... why would we do that? You just do the dirty work and your shot attempts will come off our misses, ok?

Yep, sounds legit. Some of you are stuck in the 60s I swear to God with regards to your basketball philosophies.

We still do not know how to feed the post. To argue otherwise is simply Magoo. If I had the film, I'd cut it up and show exactly what I saw. It happened and has happened for the past 2-3 years now. Whats more is if Gant would have had the ball in the high post and Kitch had sealed his man off, he'd have dropped the pass right in over the top like he did for Kitch last season as that is when the post play worked. So tell me why our bigs can post feed but our guards can't?

I agree with both of you.
I'm not going to criticize Gant or Kitch anymore the rest of the season. I know "potential" is not actual, but only what is perceived by fans. But I think many of us are frustrated because we "think we know" that Gant has the ability to do so much more.

Illinois State loses their home opener to Utah State 60-55

MVC isn't off to such a good start this season. Would have been nice for SIU to hang on last night vs. SLU

I really don't understand the Gant criticizum, his carrer has far exceeded that of Jay Tunnell and this forum LOVED him, maybe it was because all the teams he was on were strait shit!

I've said it once and I will say it again, get off Gants dick. Kid
plays one bad game to start the season (hurt no less) and some of ya'all on him - keep
on keepin on its cool. But wake the hell up!

I will decide when and if I want to get off Gant's ass SSOM. Not when you suggest I do. This is an open forum & we all get to disagree whenever we like. If you don't like it, don't read it'! Now tell me again that Gant doesn't ever fail to show over the past three years.

Dude, I honestly didn't even associate a name with the posts, you are not the first and certainly not the last to call Gant or any other player out. You gave yourself way too much credit.

I didn't personally address you in anyone of my posts nor did I quote you, but now that I know who I need to be talking to I will go ahead and strait up tell you to get a clue.

Over the course of a 4 year career a given athlete will have a bad game or two. I mean the thing about it is, the opponent sometimes has a little to do with that. Also in basketball we have these morons called officals and they can dictate what kind of game gets played and sometimes that hurts or benefits a given player.

Now, as this relates to Gant. I am less concerned about you or anyone else calling out players - hell I do that crap all the time, so come off it with this open forum bull shit - I didn't tell you personally not to post anymore. But if anyone (don't care who it is) wants to questions a kids toughness after he gets hurt and plays through it the rest of the game then you can go ahead and be gone with that stuff. How a kid is weak or soft or whatever else in a game that he plays through an injury is beyond me.

But all this is kinda funny to me as I didn't even look at your name to see who made the post. My post was toward anyone in any thread who is calling him out - you can call a kid out but you best have good reason for it. After reading your post I would agree he disappears from time to time. Probably more a product of us not looking to get him the ball than anything else.

Funny you bring up Tunnell, because one could make the argument that both were utilized in ways that did not really accentuate their skill sets. Once Tunnell was allowed to roam and move outside and shoot, he began to really score and flourish during his senior year. I was one who thought (along with others) if only he had been allowed this freedom during his earlier years, however, some of that is the fact that he was 6'8" and we aren't flush with bigs. Somebody has to go down low and do the dirty work, and when your two bigs on the floor together are Gant and RJ Mahurin, who do you put down there?

That is not a knock on any of those players, I am just trying to make the point that sometimes our post players have to play out of position due to necessity and not because it is their best position. Give us a couple 6'11" centers like Kentucky has and watch Gant score 20 points a game.

Gant, like Jay before him, has always been one of only three (at the most) who were above 6'8" so we didn't have much choice to play him down low. Does that completely match his skill set, probably not. As Jason said, he would be best served about 15 feet out setting screens and hitting mid range jumper (kid is probably the best shooter on the team) after mid range jumper.

If Gant plays beyond college and gets to play on a professional team with a true center and is allowed some freedom to be on the outside, I would think he would flourish.

Exactly. That's just it, right? Additionally, what one considers potential compared to another is also highlight subjective. For example, some people think Gant should be playing the traditional post because he is 6'8" whereas some (and I fall into this group) believe he is a face up "Euro" 4. To have Gant just sit on a block with his back to the basket would counter his strengths which I consider to be shooting and agility. I've been the first to say he doesn't finish well through contact so why try to for that? All it is going to do is lead to poor results and more criticism.

His points in the paint should come off of plays that key on that agility IMO. The same way we have him set the high ball screen and then peel off to the 3 point line for the jumper, he should set the pick and roll into the lane but again, can our guards get him the ball where he can do something with it? I'd much rather him have the ball right inside the free throw line squared up and let him either take the shorter jumper or take his defender off the dribble if the floor is properly spaced.

IMO, he should get 3-4 3 point attempts a game and 3-4 more 2 point FG attempts as a result of plays ran FOR HIM and then whatever attempts come as a result of broken plays or offensive rebounds. With 50-60 shot attempts per game, I think making sure he gets a minimum of 8 shot attempts per game is something easily doable. One last point. If anyone thinks back to Gant's best games or highlight reel plays as a Sycamore, they've pretty much all been face up stuff like his good shooting nights or his put back dunk against Ole Miss, for example.

Fire. I just want to see fire in their eyes. If they have that, everything else will take care of itself!!!
