My honest opinion is that if you aren't going to market the uniform and helmets for sale then what does it really matter.

As long as the players are excited about 'whatever' the helmets or uniforms look like, go with it. Until you can walk into the bookstore or a store (at least in Terre Haute) and buy a uniform or small helmet to put on a desk or bookshelf, what does it really matter? Same goes for basketball...make these types of things available to the public and then I will really look at it as an important thing...I would buy an ISU basketball uniform or small helmet to display in my office or even wear if I could easily get ahold of one. But, it is pretty difficult to get your hands on anything like that for the typical fan.

If we win; they will come!

Winning cures many, many ills; especially NOT being able to find the fan merchandise that you discuss; if one of the big companies WON'T work w/ State; then State needs to worker harder at it.

As for color or logos; pick them and MARKET the HELL out of them! It's called BRANDING.

All I ask for is some consistency as move forward. If there is one thing bad teams have in common it's that they change their uniforms a lot.

sack, 4Q.....I agree to some degree.....

That's been a gripe of mine for years....when I worked at Indiana State and especially now since i have moved to Indianapolis....

You simply can't find stuff with Indiana State on it. And when you do, the sizes are so limited, they must think that everybody is 150 to 175 pounds...because you can't find any bigger sizes (okay, no fat jokes please lol)......

I had a former player complain to me at Homecoming about the fact the he couldn't buy stuff inside the stadium...that he had to go outside the stadium to find anything....and even then the selection of items was very limited.....

I've also had people tell me that when they inquired about more items...or bigger sizes...they were told to go to the internet and order stuff out of an online catalouge....if they can't buy it when they see it, they're not as apt to go to the internet to buy stuff....i think it's called "impulse buying".......lol......

Since I used to work at Indiana State, I still have shirts and stuff that I wear around the westside of Indianapolis. I even have an ISU flag that I fly on game days in front of my house (right next to the huge Sycamore tree in the front yard).

People would be amazed at the number of people that holler at me when they see me wearing Indiana State gear (they actually do say good things lol) or when someone drives past the house and sees the Indiana State flag flying.

I wear Indiana State football pullovers that I got back in the day when I worked there...or sport shirts...or T-shirts.....and my ISU baseball caps.....I've had people in grocery stores and other places stop me and ask me about Indiana State......

I had the parents of one former ISU football player drive by once, they turned around and came back and then rang the doorbell to try and find out where to get an ISU flag like I had.

They said that they were pleasantly surprised to see an Indiana State flag flying amidst all the IU, Purdue, Notre Dame and Ball State flags that fly around the Indy area.

Heck, if i had the money, I would try and open up an Indiana State-related store in Indy.....sell shirts, hats, flags, etc....there are people over this way who are interested.....but they're like me....they just can't find anything.......

I just wish we would move full time the the interlocking IS logo that the baseball team uses. That would look great on the side of football lids and on the bottom of basketball shorts. I live in the Louisville area and you can't find ISU stuff anyplace, and I mean any place. There are a good amount of kids that go to ISU from New Albany, Jeffersonville, and the surrounding areas but no ISU gear in any sporting good stores. It's a shame and a real untapped market down here for us.

Can't find it anywhere...true. You simply can't...but you can't find it online either. There just much out there. And I am not paying over $50 for a golf shirt from Under Armor or $75 for a sweatshirt. That is ridiculous. The best shirts I ever found were at Sam's Club in Terre Haute, $15 for a decent golf shirt.

I have the same situation happent to me all the time in Indy. Got an ISU banner in my garage and people have stopped by when I am outside mowing or something and they have asked where I got it. Been wearing an ISU t-shirt and people have stopped me and asked me about it. I realize that the market is the market and if people wanted to actually buy ISU merchandise that local (Indy) retailers would carry it, but even the selection of ISU merchandise at the ISU bookstore and on that other athletics website (can't think of it right now) is terrible. Universitees at the Honey Creek Mall is the only retailers with any kind of decent selection....but regardless the point of Branding is a real concern in this topic.

I am all for trying to create the brand. I am all for trying different looks until you come up with a concept that works well. But, I think at some point you have to look at integrated marketing concepts and develop a plan to get licensed merchandise out there for alumni and fans. Sure, winning will help that, there is no question about that. But also, if you create something that people want to wear and like it will sell. Of course it has to have a decent and acceptable price point or the market will show little if any interest. Case in point the bookstore, I could be mistaken but they have had the same navy blue Under Armor Golf shirts that simply have Indiana State University written on the breast pocket for at least 3 years and I have only seen 2 people ever wearing them, ever. And those were staff members that probably either got them as a gift or used funds from their office budget to purchase them for the staff to create a "supportive look" for their office.

I am a beleiver in build it and they will come. Create a brand that people like and are supportive of and they will buy it too. Right now there are is no cinergy in the brand, it is confusing for the regular alumnus and fan. Which logo is it? Which colors are we? etc.

I think the same way with the football situation, decide on something and go with it. If you see a white helmet with a navy stripe down teh middel you think Penn State, if you see an all gold helmet you think ND, if you see a white helmet with a horsehoe, Colts. Same thing here, find what works and stick to it...then build the 'brand" around that idea for football...same with Basketball. Decide what you think is the best idea and go with it, making sure to integrat it into the 'plan'.

I have talked to a sporting goods guy here in Indy about making up....

some sport shirts, T-shirts and sweatshirts for the Indiana State Football Alumni Association......monies raised through the sale of the shirts would go to the football program......

Universitees in the Honey Creek mall has every ISU shirt, sweatshirt, jacket, liscense plate....you can think of. That's what they have the most of in there, including IU, Purdue...I know its not on campus but you can get any shirt you want in there. My brother's roommate works there and him and my brother have every ISU shirt you can imagine. Also, LIDS in the mall has tons of ISU hats.

My mom just helped with a deal at ISU, where faculty, student, alumni and staff could choose from several different styles of shirts and buy them for $5 because on Fridays now, the employees can wear blue ISU gear. They got them from Universitees and they sold like 1200 T-Shirts and Universitees had most of them already on their shelves.

I have a lot of Indiana State shirts from that place, and my ISU baseball that I wear I bought from Lids was only around $25.

Lids is very cheap on their ISU products and Universitees always has a sale like 2 for $25.

That is great! Universitees is currently the best outlet for ISU merchandise. Problem with LIds is that I have a enormous head...I can't wear any of their hats. I gotta order a 7 3/4 or 8 dependent on the hat. So I usually just waited for the baseball team to come around selling hats at some point, but haven't been able to get my hands on one recently. I will probably call the athletic department and see if I can order a baseball hat that actually fits.

I still say price point is a big issue with merchandising. Basically, you have to make a HUGE order of, lets say golf shirts with isu logo, to get them at a price point that people will pay, but there aren't enough outlets and/or fans that would buy them without having a big selection...it is a vicious cycle. All I know is that I have 3 ISU golf shirts that I bought at Sam's Club about 3-4 years ago...I still wear them regularly probably at least one of them each week...or so. And they aer still in decent enough shape and they were $15 bucks at Sam's Club. I would buy 5 more if I could find them for $15 but I am not ever going to pay much more than $20 for a shirt...I am just to much of a tightass.

One last thing...Universities has every T-shirt but they only have one collared golf shirt, it is an adidas shirt that is white..they may have the same shirt but in blue too. That is it and that is what alumni usually want. T-shirts are great, but you can't wear those to work in most cases...you can wear a polo shirt though. So I would very much like to see more professional clothing available..hell even a tie would be nice.

I bought a couple shirt and a hat from this website. I think they're a bunch of different sites (that are pretty much the same) selling the same items. Not the greatest selection but its different than what you can get at the game or bookstore.

I saw a guy on ebay selling mini helmets a year or so ago. I guess he was making them, he had all the old ones. I procrastinated and then the guy disappeared. I emailed him and he said the guy that made his decals went out of business. That'll teach me to wait to buy stuff. Maybe they should look into something like that. I know that some people are selling some ISU stuff on ebay.

As far as the helmet decals and uniforms i cant decide what i think would be the best. I like the baseball interlocking IS design. They could put the leaf on the side too except non botany students would think we were a hockey team from Toronto. I thought the numbers were cool, but i still like what they started the year with.

Sorry, here's the website:

Football isn't the only game in town...alums would buy ISU merchandise in general. Football, basketball, just ISU logo stuff....if it was marketed well and had a BRAND central concept.

The solution can't be that hard...

As an Alumni who doesn't live close, I expect the ISU Bookstore website to be my first-stop for ANY ISU Gear. Period. They have some stuff; I'm considering buying one of the fleeces but the royal blue looks damn bright on the screen; is it that bright or is it just my computer...

Universitees -- I check their site on occasion and while their prices are fine, I'm not a huge fan of most of the designs; I realize it's just a t-shirt but if I don't like it, I'm not going to spend $15 or less; I'd rather spend $45 on a golf / polo shirt that I know I'll wear (and like).

Ties -- I wears ties M-F unless I'm on a 'field problem' I loathe the things BUT they're nice 'bling' for the suit; I'd have to have a weapon at my head in order to get me to wear ANY logo'd tie -- I just don't think they look professional.

I'm not a fan of the baseball teams' interlocked I S; so consequently, I probably won't buy much stuff w/ it. (Why do they have a seperate logo?!)

Navy vs. Royal; again, maybe it's just my computer but a lot of the pics I see of the FBall, VB and Womens' soccer; that royal blue is awfully BRIGHT and I don't like it. The royal blue shirts at that yahoosports link weren't too bad, maybe I'll buy one.

Forgot the leaf...

Again, replace the star on the current logo w/ the correct ; botanically correct Sycamore Leaf; either find a Prof. in the biology department and work w/ the Art department to GET IT RIGHT. Hell, it can't be that HARD -- there are DOZENS of American Sycamore trees scattered around campus, send an art student out to PICK ONE off a tree, off the ground; press it and TRACE the F#$%^&*( thing... And make sure you get a student who's studying REALISM, not one of the Abstract-/Cubist-/ P. Picasso or Jackson Pollack wanna-bes Remember, we want it to LOOK like a Sycamore leaf!

Let's 'freshen' the school logo -- WAY too 80s (and NOT in a good way!) :p

I think we need a new school seal as well but that's an argument for a different day...
