Decision was made this a.m.

For better or worse, this is the decision that it would appear Jake made on his own. I would have really liked to see him play this year! But at least we have him for 4 more years now! I mean can we start the campaign now for him being Freshman of the year in the Valley next season?

All FRESHMAN will red shirt this season... This is a done deal.

Like you say Morgan "I would have really liked to see him play this year" but I see a lot of value for both Jake and the Sycamores by taking a redshirt this season.

I think this is best for ISU this season and for the next four years. With the depth we have this year he mihgt have only played 7 or 8 minutes a night. I am glad he is going to red shirt and am ready for tonight!

Sorry, but I'm siding with K-Mac on this issue -- next year, they'll all be OLDER, more mature, STRONGER, have the 'school thing' down, etc.

I believe the fact that State CAN let 4 players redshirt is a GOOD problem; not a bad one; this is how a program is built, from the foundation. And I have to believe, that this issue was discussed during the recruiting process.

4Q thats perfectly fine that you have chosen a side on this topic. But I don't think it was coaches decision, I think he would have liked to see Jake Odum red shirt and he gave him advice to help him make that decision. But I can tell you point blank that until today Jake Odum was not going to red shirt, he really wanted to play this year and help this team.

But like everyone is saying, this is a good thing for the Sycamores long term. This kid is going to be a good player for us the next 4 years!

So, you're saying the red shirt process is led by the players?? Sorry, not buying that and if the topic of redshiring wasn't at least BROACHED during the recruiting process; someone is not asking the right questions.

Redshirting is less prevalent w/ today's 13 scholie limit versus the days of 15 scholies AND it was always more prevalent in football (for obvious reasons).

I'm still trying to understand how redshirting is BAD for anyone? Coach, player, fan base, etc. Anyone?

Another thing to consider is how well the players bodies are reacting to a D1 program...
The practice schedules and number of hours in the gym (as well as the competition - and effort required) have gone up exponentially...

In my opinion... this is a positive for ISU basketball. Hopefully it's a good decision for Odum as well... I hope for a win-win....

I do know that KMac has said in the past that he never forces an athelete to redshirt, he just presents all the information and possibilities to the athelete to allow them to make the decision.

I'm sure that's correct; that he never FORCES them to redshirt, but at the end of the day, if the HEAD COACH is 'presenting all of the information,' he's no doubt laying out the 4 years of their career and how they FIT into the plan and I'd have to believe that at some point redshirting (for 90% of players) is always a possibility.

Not sure how / why it wouldn't work out for Odum; I guess I'm 'hearing' that it's an insult or a tragedy and I'm having trouble understanding it.

I really don't see the insult or tragedy to this. Although I would have loved to see Odum play this year, this team is loaded with guards. I don't see any negative stigma to redshirting, "it is what it is"...

I agree with the poster that said that Odum would most likely get 7-8 minutes playing per game which wouldn't provide the playing experience that would enhance his development.

My sophomore year in H.S. the coach took me aside and told me that I would be playing 1-2 quarters on the B team and then would dress with the varsity where I would get some varsity experience also. Basically, I was good enough to be on the varsity, but not big enough nor good enough to get as much playing time(experience) soley on the varsity as he wanted for me my Sophomore year.

For me it was the best of two worlds as I got to play a considerable amount of time between B team and varsity developing my game which led to being a starter on the varsity my Jr. and Sr. years..

I believe MOST solid programs with talented players red shirt players frequently. Carl nicks was sent to a FL Jr. college for one year to develop and mature.

I believe this decision will pay big dividends down the road for ISU and the players.

I personally was hoping to see him play this year but I'm glad it seems he came to this decision on his own. This shows he has a lot of maturity and has the patience to do what he needs to do to get ready to be great for this team! Now that all of these questions are out of the way, bring on UN-K!!

I like it. Redshirting the players helps to build the program. ISU will be better for longer because of this and I am happy to see it. Besides, the average college student is in school for 5.3 years per the national education administration, with that being the facts, it only makes sense to do this not only for the program but for the students, let them get their feet set and get established, then get out and run next season!! Go Sycamores.

It's the only downside to Jake Kelly transfering to ISU - we have to wait another year to see Jake Odum play in a game for the Sycamores that counts.

Well, having Odum red-shirt is not much of a downside. We wouldn't be having this discussion if the NCAA had ruled differently.

Kinda bummed for all the locals who got season tickets that normally dont go to ISU games for the eitels, odum, and mahurin. But I understand thats whats best for the program must be done.

I was thinkin' the same thing...Odum has the ability to be one of the best point guards ISU has seen in a while...I didnt want him to get Gabe Moored though where he ends up on a team so bad that his light shines through because hes scoring all the points....

I doubt Odum will be 'Gabe Moored' by redshirting one year; in 2010-22, we'll be 'short' Marshall, Crawford and Reed but with this years FROSH class a year older AND stronger AND next year's FROSH...the future is DEFINITELY bright for the Sycamores!

I have no idea how he feels cuz I didn't ask him but my guess is that he has mixed emotions...his competitive nature probably wants to play this season and not wait...but doing something like taking a redshirt shows a "team first" attitude which is a good sign from a PG/leader type player.

All four freshmen will be better prepared for next season and I commend them all for their "team first" attitudes. If they approach this redshirt season w/ the right frame of mind they can all become better players while working hard to prep the others during the season (read work your butts off to improve the other guys on the team by putting forth the effort when acting as the scout team)...this will, in turn, help make themselves better players in the long run.
