If Odum has injury issues, you definitely won't see Scott redshirt. I think Scott can contribute right away. Kid can shoot........and god knows we NEED shooters!!!

How much would it hurt ISU if Odum sat out 3 weeks? Would it be best to have a "plantar fasciitis"-like injury nagging FULL season, or NIP IT IN THE BUD now? This should be a coaching issue, not something optional for a player to decide. Thread reopened.

Not that I want Odum to miss the opener or any games for that matter, but I agree Bankshot, I'd rather him rest as necessary and come back at 95-100%.

Hahahah love it.

You aint keeping that kid off the court. It's the way he is wired.

Granted anyone can get hurt, Reggie Wayne proved that but some guys you can't keep out, Odum is one of those guys hurt or not he's coming to play and the message boards aint got a say in it.

And if you think this is a coaching issue I don't think you fully grasp the way a kid like Odum is wired. He takes great pride in being on the floor for practice and games as do MANY athletes we just happen to be talking about Odum and that aint your right as a coach to control "fate" that way. If he is doing everthing he can do be on the court and says he can go then guess what, he can go. At this point you trust that Odum realizes whats at stake and that he makes the best decision for he and his team. You got to trust him at this point in his career - that doesn't suggest Lansing doesn't talk to him about or doesn't get the last word because he does and he should!

BUDDAWG says nip it in the BUD now! What do the athletic trainers suggest? If it indeed is strained then the only thing that will heal it is rest and treatment.
Failure to do that will only aggregate it more and eventually it will become more than just a calf strain.
Just hope this isn't going to be one of those season long nagging issues that won't go away all because we were worried about the first week or two of the season.
Does anyone know how they are treating it currently and what the coaching staff is saying?

You guys kill me...

He is getting treatment daily. Ice! Biking/swiming for cardio and staying off it. Rehab and strength building exercise. It's likely a calf strain so you treat it like any other strain or pull - you build it back up. I am sure they are doing all those things.

Walk a day in his shoes please!!! You learn real early in sports your playing for a roster spot - even when you are hurt you don't lead on to your teammates or coaches or trainers how bad your hurt, anyone with a bit of heart in them doesn't do that.

You don't get if. Tell Cal Ripken to sit out cuz his calf hurts. Tell Reggie Wayne who didn't miss a game in 13 years to sit out because he hurt his ankle. Some guys play through pain better than those who are not playing with any pain at all.

Give me 10 guys who want to play every minute of every game with an injury before you give me 10 guys who want to go to the bench when they got a little headache or cold.

Unless I'm missing it, I haven't seen anyone be critical of him in this thread. It's a valid question as to whether he should be held out and rested. At the very least, I'd hold him out of the meaningless exhibition.

No and please don't misunderstand my passion for this very subject as anything but that - often people take my passionate responses way out of context and you and Q should know better by now.

It is a fair question and I gave my side to it. If anyone has a different side to it then by all means I'd love to discuss. But as it relates to Odum I don't see the other side. A kid like this is built on toughness. Everything isn't black and white in sports if it was we wouldn't have underdog stories and it wouldn't be entertaining. But what you have are kids like Odum who will never wow anyone with athletic ability, isn't your typical white kid who just shoots people out of the gym - he is a tough son of a gun that is a fighter with a chip on his shoulder and by coach "sitting him out" I think your playing with what made him and in my opinion you don't mess with that.

Were talking about pain tollerance and were talking about recovery. Some kids can play though anything and some kids recover quicker than others. We all aint built the same. Odum knows what he can and can't handle.

So.... Thank you

In no way am I questioning this kids ability or toughness. Simply looking at what might be in his and this teams best interest.
Mike and Mike were discussing Kobe Bryant this morning and how smart both he and his trainers are at the start of the NBA season as they take a very conservative approach to his ailments realizing its a long season and its better to be cautious at the start then to be dealing with the consequences all season. They were praising both Kobe and his staff for their mature cautious plan as they bring him back slowly.
All Im saying is its a long grinding season-----lets not waste this kids ability or have the team suffer because we want to beat Ball State!

I have not stated at any point that anyone has questioned his toughness - I am attempting to explain his toughness and how that relates to his personality and his being on the floor and why he shouldn't sit out.

I'm sorry, I don't make general posts like, "you should just let him play" without supportive reasoning.

I don't think if he is hurting at all he will play big mins. vs. Rose nor should he. Get him in, let him get his legs under him the let him rest. Play to his personality and then exercise your best judgement as a coach.

Explain the psychology & self-assessment of Odum's following statement to Golden:

"Odum saw that Pacers F Danny Granger is sitting out 3 weeks with a calf injury and said he probably should have sat out more than he did.

This statement tells me that Odum is QUESTIONING his "rate of recovery" from this calf injury. How do you read it? Why did he make this statement, when he could've said a million other things?

I agree with you and all that say he darn well not come back until he is 100% healed. I don't give a rip how tough he is, it is the trainer and coach's decision to set his butt down until he is HEALED.
SSOM is way off on this.

I wouldn't expect to be on the high side of this, most people see it the way you all see it. But I think most of ya all are soft - so thats that. Lol

But seriously, I'm glad you asked. Danny Granger has a history of injury problems. He aint built like Odum is - totally different mentality. Like I stated not all players are the same. When compared to 3 weeks ofd odum states he probably should have sat out longer because he probably only took 3 days off.

The smart thing to do would be sit out if your hurt - eapecially vs. Rose Hulman no doubt about that. But my stance is that Odum knows what he can handle better than any of us can and I don't think its fair to talk about it. He is wired the way he is and you should be thankful he is. You usually can't have it both ways. I want the kid that plays through injuries - I want him because he is tough as nails and makes a living competing. Sorry, my mind can't be changed.

I'd rather have Odum in February and March at 100% instead of 50% cause his calf is acting up and nagging him. It's better to rest him now and let him come back at full strength than let him play and have him play a full schedule and risk a more serious injury. It's not like we're playing IU and Louisville to start the season, let him rest and we'll see what happens next.

Unfortunately, this kind of "passion" often over-shadows REASON. This is a "risk mgt." issue we're talking about. The costs far out weigh the benefits, given the EXPECTATIONS that we all have for this season.

There's times where you can "loosen the lariat" and let the broncho buck all he wants. This isn't one of 'em.

You guys keep throwing percetages around and that's a really cute thing to do on the message boards but thats just the thing, for some reason you guys can't seem to seperate yourself from this forum and real life.

Have you seen these guys practice? Have you seen any practices at this level? What about games?

If your 100% in March you aint playing hard enough in practice or in games. People don't just walk around all season long 100% its not like that. So you can keep trying to impress people with this - protect him to make him 100% theory all you want but these kids are never at 100%, it's a grind!

But I've said enough, you all can sit around and agree that he should sit around and sit out or whatever you want to do. No hard feelings, I've rarely found anyone who sees my point on this topic, so not anything new here.
