The Odum Level
A discussion in the basketball forum just lead me to look at our upcoming football schedules. I didn't realize we're playing both Quincy and St. Joseph (Ind.) next year at home in the non-conference. That should help boost or win total, I would hope. My question though is where is Eastern Illinois on the schedule? Isn't that one of our oldest football, non-conference rivals?

The current staff decided that until we could be consistently competitive with EIU, they didn't want the game. I think this is a mistake. To play both Quincy and St. Joseph in the same season--that to me is sending the program in the wrong direction. No matter what people on here say, the competitiveness of the schedule plays a big part in recruiting. I think we get back on track in 2011 with Penn St, Butler, and Western KY, then go back to playing Indiana and Purdue in future seasons. Maybe we need to show wins to have Penn St keep us on the schedule?? I'd like to not see the Eastern Ill games go away--there's still room in the 2012 and 2013 schedules.

Need to schedule locally / regionally

I'm assuming there'll be no change in the MVFC for the forseeable future; that's 8 games on the schedule, for the other four, I think we should play 2 FBS schools annually, 1 should be a Big Ten school, ideally purdue, iu, northwestern or illinois, maybe add louisville or cincinnati to that list; the other should be as marquee as possible for recruiting purposes; of the other 2, one should be an appropriate (NCAA) in-state rival, ISUM, buttler, valpo, St joe's or Uindy. the other game could be the annual EIU matchup

purely theoretical but 2010 could look like this
  1. eastern illinois
  2. indiana
  3. tennessee
  4. st josephs
  5. mvfc schedule

and 2011 could be:
  1. eastern illinois
  2. ball state
  3. purdue
  4. buttler
  5. mvfc schedule

If I remember correctly (and that's certainly not guaranteed...), there have been several years in the past where we didn't play EIU. It's a very long term rivalry, but I don't think it's terribly unusual to skip them for a year here and there...

We haven't even been scheduling four non-conference games most years. I hope that changes under Miles. This year we only had ten scheduled until we got the game with Quincy.

We should never have a year like the '06 season where we only played FOUR home games. That disgusted me as much as the losing.

You have to play one FBS school every year, but I don't really like playing two, unless one is against the likes of Western Kentucky, who is a little more beatable and a team we played in their MVC days. In the past we've regularly played non-conf. teams like EIU, Austin Peay and one of those Tennessee schools (was it Martin or Murray?).

The NCAA only went to a 12 game schedule in the recent past; 12 games IS the new standard, no? W/ the MVFC having 9 teams (8 games), we'll either have 4 non-conf games OR only play 11. I don't like playing 2 FBS schools a year either but if the $$$ are there...

I think the opposite, especially with a young team. I think having a couple teams that should be easy wins will allow for the team to hopefully learn how to win and build some confidence. I believe this even more so after reading McCleskey's comments awhile back... because you know if one of your top players thinks that way, so do others.

The schedules for '10 and '11 seem to be set--both are listed on the GoSycamores web site.
Both seasons have 11 games, with '10 having Cincinnati, St. Joseph, and Quincy as non-conference games, and '11 having Penn St, Butler and Western KY as non-conf games. I'd like to see 12 game schedules, with at least 6 at home every year.

Jason, sure there's benefit to scheduling winnable games, but the players this program needs will not come here to play Quincy and St. Joseph when they can go to Ill St, SIU...and play Big Ten teams, and more competitive non-conference FCS teams. I know several of the players that do not echo Donye's feelings on that. One of the Quincy/St. Joe schools per year--OK, but not two.

Yes, I'd say 98% set, though there is still an open date in both years; Sept 11 2010 and Oct 29, 2012.

How knows, maybe we'll get a FBS school calling us later this year.

Tennesse-Martin Skyhawks or something like that. Murray State is in Kentucky. I think we should get both of these teams back on the schedule.
