The Sycamore Level
Over the past few years we have been signing the studs of the Pizza Hut Classic. Besides Rhett Smith, does anybody know if we have our eye on any other locals? I personally love the local recruiting and hope it continues.

We've had a pretty good run of local talent lately, that hasn't always been the case.We definitely need local area kids if they can contribute, some will still want to go away for whatever reasons they may have.

Rhett's team plays Rockville (with Lane Mahurin, who should be a target of ours) on Tuesday, Dec. 27, at 2:30 p.m. Those are two of the best teams in the tourney.

In my opinion, there are no other unsigned players that would help us much.

I completely agree that it's great when local kids are good, but we shouldn't take them just because they are local.

I haven't gotten to see Lane play. Is he the same type of player as RJ? And who in the past several years (before JO, RJ, Eitels) have we recruited locally? The only locals I can remember in several years have been Logan Whitman, Elliot Booe, and Harry Marshall, and I think they were all walk-ons.

Current players from the Wabash Valley are definitely what they're talking about. There was a long gap from Kenny Rowan in 1989 to the current crop. Whitman got a scholarship in the early 2000s, but was too hurt to ever play. Steve Hart transferred from IU, and he was a scholly guy. The others (including Ernie Maesch) were mostly walk-ons. Menser/Renn never played with a Valley area guy that I can remember.

Lane is more of a post player. He's still not huge, but I saw him at the Green Bay game and he has put on a lot of weight since last year. Still needs more bulking up. I would rate his potential at the same stage as R.J. as being better -- and I think R.J. has turned out great. I'd much rather have Lane than get a JUCO benchwarmer like it sounds we are after.

The Sycamores offered Lane over the summer. They'd like him to go to prep school for a year after graduation so that it would better spread out that type of player on their roster. It would also bump him into a class that has more scholarships available.

Lane actually plays the point for us here at Rockville, and then bumps down into the post. Remember the old "point-forward" stuff that Lary used to play? He sure ain't Larry, but we use him all over the place.

Lane is nothing like RJ in the fact that he does play some inside against other bigs. RJ was never a post player in high school. We posted him against guards but used him from deep most of the time. We just don't have kids who can stroke it like that very often here, so we took advantage of it. RJ was a better shooter and a deadly scorer. Lane is a better all around player and maybe a tick better athletically.

I don't have any idea where Lane will go. As with his sister, I will not get involved. I know he really likes the ISU coaches and team, but he will need to make his own decisions. There are about a dozen or so schools involved, and I guess this season could really affect his stock.

Very nice post--thanks for accurate information. You know we would love to see him in Sycamore Blue and White, but we know he will do what is best for Lane. That is the most important thing.

Looking forward to watching him the PH Classic. At 6'6 180 how athletic is he? Does he go up and get rebounds? He had what 16 tonight? It would sound like he does. Does he dunk the ball? Not that it's important if he does or doesn't just gives you an idea of his athletic ability - more or less athletic than RJ? Quicker than RJ? Hate to ask you to break down your son, maybe I will just watch and judge for myself. It's been a year since I've seen Lane play so it's tough to recall. I think you summed up my answers in "better all around". Sounds like he's improved and can play at this level - no doubt.

He's actually 6'7" and 205. I assume he'll grow a little more. I thought he was pretty tentative early last night, but he opened it up later in the game. He really only had 12 rebounds last night. I always re-stat the game from the DVD. That way there are no errors.

Can he play at that level? Who knows! He holds his own at ISU open gym pretty well. However "ISU's level" is getting better and better. Right now we're just focusing on winning high school games. He'll play somewhere I imagine anyway.

Appreciate your honest assessment Dad,sometimes it's hard to do when you are so close.I expect Lane to play where he is comfortable with some advice from you and RJ.Agree that playing time is going to get harder at ISU in the near future.Every kid wants to play at the highest level they can ,unfortunately some get bad advice from recruiters and people around them and end up in the wrong place.Good luck to Lane in the future wherever he decides to play.
