Anyone have a feel for where this recruiting class might rank nationally in FCS? Seems like we got some really good players, with great size on the lines. Just curious if anyone has heard an outside opinion...

I have been very impressed with this class...very idk the exact ranking thought on it but I am very very impressed...we should be able to replace slot of out pieces and transition to a more power oriented offense.

I don't know where they are ranked nationally, but the coaches seem very pleased! I attended the Hulman Center event and they were very happy coaches. They lost a few, (punter from North to Virginia Tech) beat a few bigger schools, and competed very high in the conference. Coach Miles did say he wants to redshirt as many freshman as possible and that these linemen when they play will be as big as any school in our division, he pointed how big North Dakota and Northern Iowa were and said will field a team as big as they were the last two years. He was very high on the incoming kicker.

Keeping my fingers crossed for no more drama with the kickers.

We've yet to have a bad recruiting class under Miles, never doubt he and his staff.

Yeah, I hope they all can redshirt. I like a couple of the linemen, but some were reaches. The staff is obviously going for a specific frame now, but we were head and shoulders the best offer for a few. I believe one or two didn't get any other D1 sniffs.

I really like the highlight film of safety prospects Wilson and Strohm. The Conlan Cassidy kid interests me... he looks like he'd be good in run support and sniffing out the quick screen. Time will tell what we got... it all will depend on how hard they work once they get in here.

Miles has a history of finding overlooked kids. The name Obaseki comes to mind. Not saying all fall in that bucket, but some may. Also most of this years original graduating class fell into that bucket from what I recall. I know we are shooting for the best now, but even if we don't land a 3 star recruit or win a head to head battle the size, potential, and talent of our overall classes just keeps looking more and more promising. I bet we bring in a late transfer or two as well this year after spring ball to fill in late needs. Possibly a tackle since we lost that juco kid at the last hour. Just my two cents.

I dont want to keep referencing NDSU so if I get annoying let me know, but you guys are spot on in the "jewel in the rough" kids.

several of the best kids on NDSU's team this year were local lower class playing kids. Ryan Smith was a game changer, Travis Beck recovered a fumble that produced 7 points against GSU and took the Game winning dagger Interception to the 1 yd line in the NC game, Bradon Jemison made the Dagger 4th down stop on the 4 yd line in the GSU game and all had no other major DI offers, they always dreamed of being a Bison and they played their heart and soul to get the starting nod and kept it. I might add 2 are Fresh and 1 Junior. Stars dont mean anything nor do offers from other schools

I never get tired of you bison and I always enjoy your visit. You guys are the champs and it is good to hear how you guys got there. I think boda was talking about where our class will rank amongst others not so much which kids will perform better in the end. But I agree with you for sure bison. Any ISU blue fan should know all this three star and other school stuff doesn't matter. Got a name for ya. Shakir Bell.

Annoying? Not at all. I think you will always be welcome here. How can we be offended when you talk about usually favorable comparisons to the best?

I know I keep referencing working with Coach Raetz....

But he loved recruiting kids that other schools passed on. If he saw a kid that he really liked, that there was something he saw in the game film/tape, from talking to the kid and his parents, his coaches, his teachers, then he would bring him in.

We had a lot of guys who went on to play beyond Indiana State who were late recruits, guys that no other Division I offers. He would say, "We're going to coach'em up. If the kid doesn't progress and turn into something, that's our fault."

And nine times out of 10, he did really well with those kinds of kids. They usually worked harder and longer because they had a chip on their shoulders. They wanted to prove to other schools that had passed them up that they could play.

I remember quarterback Jeff Miller. It was between ISU and Ball State as to where he would go to school BSU wanted him to play linebacker. ISU said come to Terre Haute and you'll be our quarterback. BSU coaches scoffed at that. All he did was come to Indiana State and kick butt for four years.

Raetz used to say that you can't count on a kid's heart, how much he really wants it.

Here's another story for you. We were in preseason practice in August. A kid kept hanging out by the fence watching. He wouild show up every day. Finally Raetz sent someone over and asked the kid who he was. He said that he was a freshman at ISU and was interested in playing football. He was a local kid, from Marshall, Illinois. Didn't get many, if any, recruiting offers. He was too small.

Raetz liked his spunk for just showing up and watching every day. Finally, he told the kid that if he was interested that he would let him come and be a part of the team. But that he couldn't promise him anything in terms of a scholarship. The kid took Dennis up on his offer.

That kid wound up being linebacker Troy Johnson who went on to sign a free agent contract with the New York Jets. So you just never know.

SB related thread to football recruiting....

Per CBS Sports.com's Bruce Feldman: There are 36 Patriots who came up in internet recruiting era. 18 were rated as 2-Star prospects or worse: http://bit.ly/xN2GaA

Very few of those guys are major contributors though. A couple are, the rest are just roster filler. The bottom line is you win with talent. Some of these guys got coached up, but at the end of the day, the team with more talent often wins out.

BTW, while I use the star system as a barometer, a kid's other scholarship offers is what I really hang my hat on. Who would you take If you've got two safety prospects and one has offers from 1 MVFC school and a bunch of D2 schools and the other kid was offered by the entire MVFC? Odds are the second kill will end up being a better player because ever talent evaluator thought he was good enough to offer a scholarship.

Raetz was one heck of a coach, I won't spend time defending him as those many high school coaches who knew him will attest to his ability and program he had here, remember, the great budget cuts were forced on him. I would say that coach that Miles pointed at his at Hulman Center event, Ryan Roberts and Alex Sewell were not offered by anyone but State. What a pleasure it was watching those two young men!

those two weren't recruited either? wow...how do you look at those kids and say...nahh..6'5 220...Nah...sorry...LOL..if you were only an inch taller...sewall is a freak...oh well...But shakir was a parade all american...its a bigger slap in the face for him...that is the biggest story of overlooked kids I think....all the colleges told him even though he is the best rb in highschool...they still didn't want him....to get overlooked is one thing...but shakir was a warren central and everyone recruits there...and was a parade all american...he didn't get overlooked...he was kicked to the curb....now he is kicking them all to the curb....If i remember correctly...we were the only school that offered anything...good call trent...I think trent being short himself and maybe having to go through the same things as shakir helped his decision to bring him in....

The way I heard it Troy Walters was all over Shakir. Also I heard a few schools tried stealing him late in the game, but he stuck with us from all our early attention.

Ryan Roberts played at a smaller high school.....

and fell through the cracks. I know Coach Raetz said that had Ryan played at a bigger high school, he probably would have ended up at a Big 10 school. Raetz and his coaching staff had a real knack for beating the bushes and finding raw kids who developed into outstanding players. They specialized in finding kids that other schools had bypassed.

I'm pretty sure Sewall was recruited by others. His dad can confirm, but I believe I spoke to him about it before.
