that linebacker depth may have gotten a bit better....

with the apparent transfer of a former marshall player.......

Yes, he got hurt in the Eastern Ill game after getting 2 picks against Louisville the week before. He is a solid player, and always seemed to find ways to be around the ball. The LB depth is still good--remember Archie was not starting during the spring. I think Wozniak was moved to DE, but he played some LB last year also (assuming he can play, but he had a shoulder issue). So now if they are in a 3-4, I would assume it will be Cook, Archie, Roberts, and Washington, with Bettag and I think a new transfer also in the mix. I wish Tino the best in rehabbing.

from walker's high school career.....prior to his senior season....

Entering his team's spring scrimmage, Cypress Bay linebacker Phil Walker still didn't have any offers even though he played in a 9-2 team that advanced to the regional semifinals.

Even at 6-foot, 215-pounds and running a fast 4.56 in the 40, Walker was still waiting for offers.

However, hard work paid off for Walker. Once the first offer came in, the rest started to follow.

''The first one actually came in when I went to the D-I football camp. I worked out there and that's when the Northern Illinois coach saw me and pulled the trigger [with an offer],'' Walker said.

The offer was a bit of a relief for Walker who works out daily at Perfect Competition during the summer, a training camp that a lot of potential future NFL draft picks compete at in order to get ready for the NFL Draft.

HARD WORK

''It felt really good that all my hard work for four years paid off, that I'll be able to play at the next level,'' Walker said. ``I just kept working hard and kept telling myself that the offers were going to come.''

Beyond Northern Illinois, Walker said he has offers from Kansas State, Central Michigan, Western Michigan, Middle Tennessee State and Miami (Ohio).

He also expects an offer from Rutgers soon.

''I am pretty sure I am going to get a Rutgers offer because the coaches have called my coach to send my transcript,'' Walker said.

Walker had made his way to number of camps this summer as well.

''I've been to Rutgers. I went to Boston College. I went to Florida and I went to UCF,'' Walker said.

But he's not gotten any offers from any Florida schools and he only gets correspondence from Florida and Florida Atlantic.

''Only Florida coaches write me, but nothing big. FAU is about it in terms of actually talking to me,'' Walker said.

As a junior, Walker had 60 tackles after racking up more than 100 tackles as a sophomore at Mater Academy. He is aiming for more than 100 tackles again and the work he continues to put in he feels will get him there.

''I work with my brother a lot. We go through intense workouts at school with Perfect Competition. When I go home on the weekends, we just get together with some other players and work together on drills,'' Walker said.

Walker most recently bench maxed 320 pounds and has a 365-pound squat max.

WORKING ON GRADES

One of the things that Walker continues to work on is getting qualified. He maintains a 2.4 GPA, but has not earned the necessary test score yet.

''I took the ACT the first time I got a 16. My GPA is a 2.4 core. I am taking the ACT again. It was my first time taking it and my coach was like take it before the spring. I had no preparation for it. This time I am in preparation and taking it again in September. I am taking ACT class to get ready, doing drills, pre-tests, so now I know what to expect,'' Walker said.

Following a 9-2 season though, Walker is now shifting his football focus to the season.

''Our expectations are high every day. Every day we get after it. We are trying to go after that state title. That's the only way I look at it for my senior season,'' Walker said.

I would think Walker would have a step up coming into the program. He's coming here from playing in the defense we're putting in.

I'm a little confused. NIU, Rutgers, Marshall. Can someone sum up this guy's collegiate football story in a graph or two?

Not sure I follow. Are you asking why he came to ISU?

If so, it's about Minter. Minter recruited him to play at Marshall. He redshirted last year as a freshman so if he transferred to another Division I school, he'd have to sit out an additional year. Coming to Indiana State, he can play immediately.

I would think he would have to sit out a year without a release from Marshall. I thought I read where the new QB from Washington would have had to sit out but was granted release from washington. I am asking not sure of rule.

Nope. Any FBS to FBS transfer requires you to sit out a full season unless granted a waiver from the NCAA like in the case with USC and their sanctions. There is no penalty between FBS to FCS, regardless if your previous school releases you or not. This is why you see a lot of FBS kids drop down to play at FCS schools because they can play right away. They also do this a lot of times because their FBS school won't release them, especially to a rival or scheduled opponent.

That's good enough. I was just curious about his eligibility since reading those stories it was a little confusing as to which schools he had or hadn't played at.

I saw that thread and figured it out. I was just a little confused by some of the stuff Tom posted. It's good to know he has four years with us.

Tino is going to play and have the knee fixed after the season. One tough young man!!! He ran the mile the other day in a little over 5 minutes and is getting looks from pro teams.

Sounds like this guy has lots of talent and heart but knee problems are a risky business..if he has a future in football then he should be careful...I hope that the excitement of getting started and being around his teammates and all of the smack talking and fun stuff that goes on isn't making him make this decision out of emotion...Get healthy tino..get healthy...football is just a game but you will need your knees for a lifetime..Although a mile in five minutes doesn't sound like he is doing too bad...

If I'm not mistaken, this is the same type of injury Justin Carter (Creighton hooper) had last year and he ended up playing thru it. He had a couple instances where he went down in pain but he was a former football player and he'd eventually get back in or play the next game. So I guess I'm saying it's plausible to play w/ the MCL issue as I witnessed it last year....

I know he can play through it but football is much more violent...especially at the LB position...he is going to make contact every play and getting cut by offensive lineman...be in the middle of piles..and the list goes on...I am not trying to be discouraging...just thinking...If he was a QB or
