This game should give us a decent barometer on how much, if any, improvement has taken place. We could have won this game last year, but we couldn't close the deal. Let's hope the offense figures it out this week...

Alright guys... so we've got a defense, we know this. What can be done offensively to start putting some points on the board. Personally, I think you have to go back to Stutzriem as he doesn't look lost out there like Travis does.

I'd also like for them to get a little more inventive on the offensive side of the ball. Since our offensive line is havine problems with protections, how about a little misdirection to try and take advantage of overpursuit? I also think you need to try to establish the ground game -- Gates is averaging nearly 4 years a carry. If you can get even a servicable ground game going, that opens up play action and the passing game.

Also, in order to help with the line issues, they need to come up with more underneath and quick out routes -- this is also why I think Stut is the guy since he has a stronger arm. Kent and Roberts with their speed would be a great on some 7-8 yard out routes and supplement that with some nice crossing and slant routes. How about a WR screen -- toss it out to Roberts and let him run in space. Throw in some passes to the backs in the flats and yahtzee!

There is absolutely nothing wrong with dinking and dunking to try and build some confidence.

Good call! I saw that episode of MASH, too!!! What was it that Billy Whateverhisnamewas said? Something like, "Yeah, it was the short pass that got us down the field..."

Wow, a sports site with TV trivia mixed in - how cool!!!

Youngstown State has won two in a row by a score of 38-21 in each game. The opponents were Northeastern and Austin Peay. They don't really look ripe for an upset.

Both of the opponents they beat look pretty weak though. One win between the two of them so it could be reason for some optimism going into this one.

I don't hold a lot of stock in Sagarin but I have found it's pretty accurate in determining good/bad match ups. According to it Youngstown St. will only be 8 point favorites against us this weekend. I'm not saying we'll win but
it's one of our better chances on the remaining schedule. Bring a couple extra beers for after the game just in case!

And there isn't anything wrong with that at all. You could make a serious case compariing "dinking and dunking" to the "West Coast offense" in terms of lots of short routes, quick timed routes, etc.

I honestly don't care what they use, but what we know is nothing has thus far short of the Quincy game where we had several nice drives. Sometimes it makes more sense fitting a system around your players rather than trying to jam the players (square peg) into your system -- a round hole.

What's the better definition of coaching?

"Sometimes it makes more sense fitting a system around your players"

or:

"Trying to jam the players (square peg) into your system -- a round hole. "

Believe it was Bum Phillips who said:

"He kin beat yourn players' with hisn' players and then take yourn' players and beat hisn' players."

I'm hoping the offense can have a few sustained drives on Saturday. Last year we ran the ball pretty well against them, but we were up near halftime because of a defensive score. We have a couple of defensive starters down, so it will be that much more important for the offense to have some production.

Agreed. I'm telling you, I'd love to see them throw the WR screen to Ryan Roberts and see if he can make folks miss. Notre Dame made a killing with that when they had Jeff Samardzija and I think Roberts could have similar success. Even if it is just ripping off 4-6 yards at a time, it's a start.

High School coaches fit their system around their players all the time, because they do not recruit (at least most do not recruit).
The point is you need to simplify as much as you can. Install a base offense and until they master it, don't go any further. There is no point having a complex playbook if they can't execute it.

Hi Guys,

I'll be driving in to watch the game...looking forward to it.

Do you all still tailgate right in front of the stadium? I was there a few years back and it was great, very handy.

I can't believe I'm coming all the way from Western PA and you have a kid from my high school on your team (Freshman RB Stefanik).

I've noticed you've been hitting the W-PA powers lately as far as recruiting goes, and you're even doing it better than we have. It's a good strategy, lots of talent here.

Hope to chat with some of you Saturday...what time does the administration let you setup?

Hi Guys,

Glad you're making the trip. Yes. All along the west side of the stadium is where it will be happening. I'm not sure if they have any restrictions on set up time or not. I've been there pretty darn early before.

That area is a recruiting hot bed... I hope we keep it up.

Welcome.
