The White Level
Looking at the coaching staff on the Sycamore website, every single coach on staff basically lists their experience with "hitters and infielders"

Not one, including Hannahs, lists pitching as their forte.

Obviously when Hannahs was at the JUCO for 9 years, he no doubt handled the pitchers at least some of the time. I'm guessing that maybe the case here as well?

Long term, are they better off finding a true "pitching coach"? Not only from an instructional point of view but very importantly, from a recruiting standpoint. Parents, players and their coaches pay attention to this sort of thing.

Just and observation and attempt to spur some conversation....

I heard Farrell left to scout in the MLB. Not sure why or where. I think Hannas is working with pitchers. IMHO I think they should have a true pitching coach. I think that is what recruits and parents would want, but what do I know, I'm just a fan.

Curious, what ISU pitchers went w/ Heller up to Iowa? Looks like the Sycamores are gonna be a lil' raw in this area during the 2014 season.

I am not 100% sure, but I think everyone stayed. I think Heller was liked as a coach, but not loved enough to follow.

What RECRUITS went w/ Heller to Iowa? Here's an E-mail I received from a person CLOSE to the program, discussing the Farrell issue & 2014 pitching:

"He was our volunteer coach and had come back to school to finish his degree. He was approached by an MLB franchise to go back to pro baseball and took the job. Coach Hannahs will coach the pitchers this year.

It could be a tough year for baseball. Previous Coach Heller influenced some of our pitching recruits to go with him to Iowa. We will hit and play defense but pitching could be rough. Coaching staff is excited about 2015 and 16 seasons."

We are talking about kids that were currently on the team. Recruits go with coaches all the time. Not surprising.

I am not sure either what recruits went with him. I was thinking there was a kid that had good numbers as a junior in highschool, but fell off as a senior that decided to go elsewhere. If I recall some on this site thought it was no great loss. I wouldn't swear to that in a court of law, but I kinda remember something of that sort. (I'm sure that really cleared things up)

I'm sure they'll be just fine this year regardless of having a pitching coach or not. Mitch will do just fine. Meaning, I don't think the results for 2014 will be any different than they might have otherwise.

It is the recruiting that I would be a bit worried about for the future.

Someone is going to have to move on, right? Now, I'm sure Mitch is perfectly capable of handling it himself, even long term, I just wonder if that will impact recruiting the top level type P's that generally are attracted to a quality EXPERIENCED pitching coach.

Sooooo.....the elephant in the room is WHO LEAVES? Farrell was going to be a student asst (a very well qualified one at that ) but the chances of filling a student asst or volunteer asst (if they can even have another) with a qualified candidate is extremely unlikely.

Does someone have to leave? Can they have 1 head coach, 2 assisants, and 1 pitching coach? I am guessing by your question that you don't think they have the money to have to keep eveyone and bring on someone else? I have no way of knowing I am just tossing that out for 'food for thought".
I am of the beleif too, that they will be just fine this year, but I think if they want good recruits down the road they will need a real pitching coach.

I was thinking there are limitations on the # of coaches you can have. Title IX has utterly destroyed mens athletics (don't get me started on that BS)

I wasn't thinking of the financial side of hiring another coach really. But that is obviously a concern as well. I thought it might simply be that they cannot take on another full time assistant.

Anyone know the rules there?

I googled and found that a team may not have more than 5 assistants on the payroll. The more I think about it, with coach Prettyman being a young coach and from CalSt. Fulerton, it wouldn't shock me to see him leave in a couple of years. Either as an assistant for a bigger program or getting a head coaching gig at a starter school. With good stock like that, we probably won't be able to keep him very long. Plus I would think that Smiley would want to be a head coach too somewhere. IMO most assistant coaches would like the opportunity to be the head coach somewhere. ISU has a nice baseball program so I would think that both would get a few looks if they choose to go in that direction.

Here is the press release when we signed nine people in the fall of 2012 for the 2014 season. None of these names appears on the Iowa roster. I am unsure if we signed additional people after that time or not.

Looks like 6'2" P NICK BELZER went to KANSAS STATE and 5'11" SS JAKE RIFFICE is @ Iowa w/ Heller (played w/ Waterloo in the Collegiate Development League last Summer & again slated THIS Summer). The rest of the recruits are SYCAMORES.
