Marthann Markle founded the Sparkettes in '59 and carried the excellence of the program until her retirement in '86. I dated a few Sparkettes during my undergrad dayz, and they were ever-conscious of gaining weight because of Markle's strict enforcement of her established policies. Markle died a few yrs. ago, but her obituary "Comments" are evidence of the RESPECT that her girls had for her program. It's truly sad what the once-classy Sparkettes have evolved into...btw, Markle also taught a Ballroom Dancing class @ ISU after her Sparkette retirement.

There is confusion in your post. The HOOSIER Classic was the original Crossroads Classic (2 indiana big ten schools, buttler and north crook - it ran from the late 1940s through the early 1960s and was a buttler-hosted event at their fieldhouse) in the early '80s, the Monroe County Reform School glommed the title and began hosting a 2-cupcake tourney at Market Square Arena -- this was in addition to their long-time monroe county-hosted 2-tm 'holiday tourney' aka the Indiana Classic...

the Hoosier Classic was shuttered in 2001-02 after gloomington lost at conseco to buttler
the Indiana Classic survived our Victory in 1999-2000 for one season but as gloomington nearly lost (again) to Valparaiso in the 2001-02, the gloomington reform school shuttered it

The 1999 Indiana Classic trophy should be in a place of honor in Hulman BUT shouldn't be treated any differently than the 1978-79 Hatter Classic title nor the 1970-71 Vegas Invitational

I wouldn't bet my life on it but I'm pretty sure we won the last Indiana classic. I can't find anything about it except for the star reference.

Raise some Hell with the Board Of Trustee’s. Demand some accountability. What is currently being displayed is “Embarrassing”………REALLY!!

I was a freshman in 70-71 and don't remember the Vegas Invitational. If the trophy still exists along with the Hatter Classic I whole heartedly agree. They all should be listed prominently in the newly renovated HC. Tell us who we defeated in Vegas to win this and what arena it was played in. That may refresh my memory. Of course I will never forget our surprise upset of the Boilers at Mackey during the 70-71 Season.

opening game Trees beat host UNLV 78-76
they beat Tulsa 79-72 for the title

Las Vegas Convention Center was the home of the Runnin' Rebs

One would hope both trophies are somewhere on campus

I've been following the Sycamores for 13+ years now and I've NEVER heard 1 good thing about that woman. How she still is around is beyond me.
My daughter did the kids cheering thing either last year or the year before. She loved it and the coach even told my wife to contact her before the next game and she would get her some pom poms which she did and the cheerleaders took a picture with her.

now you have heard a good thing.

They certainly have a nice media guide. I'm glad I didn't bet. Reminds me of a night at Simerells several years ago. I was playing pool and some middle eastern guy Asked me "how about we play for your life". We settled on beer. Free drinks always taste better 🙂

‘73 alum here. Also disheartened to hear the performers identifies as the generic “spirit squad”. I raised the question at the last game and a friend thought it may be a lack of interest and low numbers interested in participating.
If I may add, I cannot stand our PA announcer’s efforts. The job is to announce the game, not perform, and I cannot understand a word he says. His “get ready to rumble” efforts cause me to want to check the scorer’s bench for vomit. Have some class and clearly enunciate. That is your job.

I vividly recall listening to these game while laying in bed with my transistor radio under my pillow. Bob Forbes went nuts!

Mr.Smith was a wonderful announcer for several years and then just like that he was unceremoniously gone.
