Horrible decision by Alford. He just signed a 10 yr. extension worth about 2.5 million and New Mexico would have to pay a ton of money to release him. He was as Bally says "A Big Fish in A Small Pond". Now he must deliver, and quickly, or he will be toast.

Glad to see that some of you read my quirps. Since I am a firm believer he can flat out coach, and he has been loyal to New Mexico forever, we'll see but I imagine he can do it. That said, when his arrogant ass interviewed for the ISU job, he turned everyone off. He has invested the time to be a very high quality coach, learned by experience and mellowed and my guess is, he will be a success.

That place has been a coaches graveyard lately...wonder if his boy (40PPG HS scorer) is following ?

I think this will turn out just like Iowa. He will be there a few seasons and then move back to a smaller type program in a smaller conference. Not that he can't coach, he can. I just think some coaches are a better fit at a ( I don't know what to call it) high mid major. Does High Mid Major sound right?

Let's see, Ben Howland at UCLA....3 Final Fours in 10 seasons.....Fired.

Steve Alford at New Mexico...3 NIT appearances in 6 seasons.....Multi-Million dollar contract extension.

Good luck Steve.

I hope it works for him. UCLA has not been real friendly to coaches since Wooden.

Alford is a competitive person and I am sure he knows the issues with taking this job. I am sure he received some knowledgeable advice from the best basketball ever Bob Knight.

This is all about ego.

Agreed... and confidence. I think he thinks his style with the recruiting base he can get at UCLA will win.

I look for him to try to invade Indiana for prospects. The good news is we won't be bumping heads with him for mid-major kids. He was in on quite a few kids from Indiana.

I liked the guy until I heard he how he handled the Lansing situation, I hope he goes and fails miserably even though I don't believe he will.

He had a 10 year 2 mil contract at NM, this is not about money.

Oh, OK...so you think he'd move to L.A. on the same salary he was making in Albuquerque, given the comparative cost of living?

I understand your ideological viewpoint, but "ideology" doesn't pay the bills. It's obvious that Alfie is mesmerized by the UCLA hoop mystique, an idea that may have been reinforced while playing in Hulman Center this past season.

Like everyone else I didn't see this one coming at all! I know UCLA has the tradition and the lure of being in LA but I would have stayed at New Mexico without even thinking about it for a second. Better chance to win at NM and a much better and more diehard fanbase.

Not sure if Alfies "Hoosier values" will mix well with the L.A. rat race...Albuquerque is a whole different world. There's no Sante Fe nearby, that's for sure!
:tumbleweeds:

The 2 mil will go a lot farther in NM than in LA. As I said in another post this is about ego, the last time he was on the big stage did not go so well so I don't see where he should have a lot of confidence that this will be any better. All of his success has come at the mid-major level.
